What is a starf*cker? However you define it, Matthew Rettenmund, author of the acclaimed novel Boy Culture and the popular blog BoyCulture.com, readily admits to being one. The ultimate pop-culture enthusiast, he has been obsessed with celebrities ever since he was born. This hilarious, sexy memoir (arranged by memes) documents Rettenmund's affection --in the case of Madonna, it's pure mania--for movie, television, and music personalities. From his years as a star-obsessed gayby to his contradictory careers in porn and as a teen-mag editor (names will be named), Rettenmund details and deconstructs his--and our--passion for celebrity.

Smee Extremely funny memoir (or meme-oir) that I actually did not want to end. Matthew has tonnes of fascinating stories, and I would imagine plenty more to tell. This is a must have book, and there are several passages that truly inspired me. He doesn't shy away from heavy subjects and has a way of making things universal and at the same time poignant and funny. He has a way of crystallizing specific things....more often then not getting to the real root of a person. He has an incredible understanding of humanity and self-awareness in himself...something lacking all to often in this world. Excellent and entertaining!

There were also a number of poignant moments as well. This is a memoir about the author, Matthew Rettenmund that includes his many celebrity encounters and obsessions. You will not go wrong in buying and reading this book. I have been a long time reader of Rettunmund and enjoy his writing (both his books and his blog).Rettenmund is a master of pop culture references and tells all of his tales with humor. He sets up his funny jokes and then hits strong with the punch line. His growing up story as a perpetually chubby and 'different' child all the way through his college years and diverse career are all very identifiable and enjoyable. Matthew Rettenmund is also fearless in making himself the butt of the joke and also in revealing 'TMI' about his own life.As a regular reader of Matt's blog, boyculture, I have lived vicariously through his many celebrity encounters via 'stalking' (ha ha) at the various meet and greet/autograph shows that he attends. He always provides fair and kind commentary of (nearly all) of the 'stars' he comes into contact with and provides many an answer to 'whatever happened to' ........... His lists are always well done and informative and as a 'child of a certain age', it is really easy to identify with Matt and his pop culture fascination (Hello, fellow 'Looker' fan !).He's unafraid to tell tales about both people he has worked with, worked for and the celebrities (both up and coming and past their prime). The best part is the promise of more tales to tell than can fit in one book ......... Yeaaaaaaa.Really just a fun read with some tender moments too. I even learned a new word ! (delortified) ......... The only thing better than reading this book would be hanging out with Matt to hear him tell the tales (Call me !)

It's not only candid and poignant in places, but it's raucously humorous, full of laugh-out-loud passages and hilarious wit. I kind of fell in love with the author's mother, who is a real character, but most of all, I loved the book for it's honesty. It would have been easy to sugarcoat or embellish parts of it, but truth is stranger than fiction. The author was brutally honest about himself and any situation or circumstance he found himself in and he made me feel as if I was right there with him. He spins the dice and lays it all out for public consumption, and it pays off. It's also a great book for anybody who grew up in, or is nostalgic for, the 70's and 80's. It's engaging from page one and I flat-out loved it, and no doubt, everybody else will, too. Five stars for sure!
