The great strength of the book is that Bateman goes beyond merely chronicling his life story. He provides a fascinating discussion of other artists, of squabbles in the art community, of his creative process, and how his artistic sense has informed his vision of environment and architecture. The book is richly illustrated with sketches, drawings, paintings and photos. The only negative, other than a few typos, is the lack of an index, which surely will handicap art historians and even the casual reader who wants to re-read a particular passage.
