Great Investment for Beginners and the Agentless/NOT a Replacement for Work/Research By chasmaster If you're an agentless screenwriter trying to do what you can until you get an agent, you shouldn't be sorry that you have this book. Is some of the information outdated? Yes. But that's the nature of this business. Production companies come and go all the time and there's no way to predict who will come and stay and who will come and go. I've seen many negative reviews for other volumes of The Hollywood Screenwriting Directory complaining about it being outdated, but you have to realize the point just made. Additionally, there's been the complaint that some companies don't actually accept queries when it's stated that they do, but it's my assertion that regardless of what information the book possesses, screenwriters should research any company before ever sending a query in the first place. Is it a lot of work? Yes it is. But nothing worthwhile ever comes easy. Where else are you going to find such a large, comprehensive list of production companies? You could Google and search all day long, but what if you had an alphabetical list of thousands right in your hand and all you had to was some research to see if A) the company is still in business and B) whether or not it appears if they actually do accept queries? I started off the ultra hard way: Googling production companies, independent and well-known, researching and sending emails. I got some hits back that way, but I knew that there had to be more than what I was finding on Production Hub and other websites that list such. And in books like these, you eliminate a lot that ultra hard work of Googling and deciphering. If you're expecting this book to eliminate an up and coming writer's need to pound the literal and virtual pavement of doing thorough research on production companies, you're going to be sorely disappointed. There is no easy way into this industry if you have no contacts. You still have to work and work hard at getting your foot in the door. Too many are expecting books like these to eliminate all the hard work and that's realistically not going to happen. But I'm quite happy having thousands of possibilities in the palm of my hand to eliminate 'some' of the work of finding companies in general. When I'm looking up these companies, the first thing I look for is a website. If they don't have a website, the next thing I look for is if a Backstage link pops up, and then a Facebook or any social media link. If they have a Facebook and it isn't active (i.e. no profile picture or activity since at least last year)...see ya...they're probably not in business anymore. No website isn't a game-changer for me, but it does make me question if they're still in business or if they're successful enough to even look at my work. Many writers often comment on Done Deal Pro about production companies, agents, managers, etc, so if that pops up...I'm looking at those. I'm trying to see if there's a track record of any kind...and a recent one at that. They don't have to be Universal Pictures, etc.(without an agent or connections, that door isn't opening anyway), but I'd like to see what work they've done. Is any of it noteworthy, as in has their work been in festivals? Won any awards? Or are they working hard making movies, have some promising work but still looking for that big break, too? I take it all into consideration, depending on which of my projects I'm pitching..feature or short. The point of all of this is that for the screenwriter without an agent, this book is a great tool to work with...'work' is the key word here. You still have to work. You still have to research. But you have hundreds of pages featuring thousands of companies. And by the way, this book is available on The Writer's Store website for about $30, so don't get screwed over here. And the Spring/Summer edition comes out in early April if you want the latest version, but from what I've heard from other screenwriters who have multiple editions...not too terribly much changes. Some, yes, because new companies come and others go...hence, what I said in the beginning ;) Keep writing/working, everyone, and never give up on your dreams!!
