In January 2016, Phil Lynott (bass player and lead singer with Thin Lizzy) will have been dead for 30 years. Fitting therefore to look back at the recorded output of his band, particularly as people are only really starting to acknowledge that Lynott is up there with the best of them when it comes to songwriting. Lyrically he weaves compelling tales that can be compared to Springsteen. Irish author Alan Byrne, who has followed the band for many years (and has already written a biography of both Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott), turns his attention to Lizzy's recorded output from their 1971 debut through to 1983's Thunder And Lightning, which was the last album to feature Lynott. This is a unique angle as most books on the band emphasize their blistering live performances and hedonistic lifestyle (not that Byrne doesn't cover the excess too, of course), He looks at how the albums were made via interviews with band members such as Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson and Brian Downey, Interestingly, he interviewed guitarist Snowy White who has previously been reticent to talk about this part of his career. Producers and technicians have also been interviewed, as have the photographers who shot the record sleeves. In other words, this is an exhaustive looking back on the band. Byrne has also secured many rare and previously unseen photos from fans, making this very much a book by and for fans. Fitting, given that Thin Lizzy inspired great loyalty amongst the faithful. Byrne also puts things into perspective by examining the band's legacy, which is considerable. The twin guitar harmony sound has been oft imitated, but never bettered; the songs are classics.

Don't Believe the Hate By Amazon Customer Being a lifelong Thin Lizzy fan, and having read all the books, I was both looking forward to “Are You Ready” with anticipation, but also measured reserve, because – based on his other Lizzy books -- I knew how much Byrne damns most of Lizzy’s music. Interesting that he considers himself a big fan.I’m not just some Thin Lizzy fanatic that thinks the band can do no wrong, and I guarantee you that I have a broader range of music in my collection than Byrne. I know they recorded several duds, just not nearly as many as Byrne would assert. By discounting so much of Lizzy’s music, I’m not sure if Byrne is trying establish some sort of objective “cred” or if he literally hates the band’s music that much. Either way, it’s a bummer to read how $hitty he thinks one song is after another.Just one of dozens examples is how much he hates “Ballad of the Hard Man.” A hard rocker, but different than their usual rockers. Now anyone with ears just has to listen to that song once to hear a raw guttural mid-tempo rocker with a sinister vocal and performance to match the lyrics. That it contains riffs and a hook that Grand Funk would have killed for, further enhances its value as a premium Lizzy hard rocker. Another example, Byrne pretty much writes off all of the good to excellent Nightlife album as underdeveloped, too soft and jazzy. Seems he has a certain paradigm or box that he wanted Lizzy to stay in, and whenever they ventured outside of Byrne’s vision of the band, he writes off the music as below average. Now when reading a critical overview of a band’s recorded music, I’m never going to expect to agree on all points. But if you’re a big Lizzy fan, fully expect a barrage of negativity toward some of your favorite Thin Lizzy albums and songs. Thin Lizzy were great band, not because they had a few great songs and a few great albums; they were great because they had a lot of great songs and albums.I love “album by album” type books, because for me, it’s always about the music and not the behind the scenes BS that means nothing. And a book like this on one of my favorite bands should be a real treat. It’s just a shame it was written by such a hater. That said, I’d still buy the book for some of the new information on the band and music that I hadn’t read before.
