Reviews help sell books. When browsing online for their next read, most readers are drawn to the books with many reviews. More and more readers glance at what other readers have to say about a book before they hit the 'buy now' button. The more people have read and liked the book, the more they want to experience it for themselves. This is a known psychological factor called 'social evidence', and it plays a big role in purchasing decisions. The more reviews your book has, the better, especially if they are genuine, personal, thoughtful and positive. Reviews can multiply your sales and catapult your book to the top of bestseller lists - but how do you get them? Perhaps you're a new author and can't get those crucial early reviews to start the train rolling. Maybe you're a seasoned author and your books have garnered reviews, but but not as many as you need to break out. Or perhaps you've gone the corporate publishing route, and find that your publisher's publicist isn't getting your book the attention it needs. This book shows you many proven strategies to get the reviews your book deserves. Instead of urging you to labour through tedious, spirit-draining procedures, I'll reveal quick, fun, empowering tricks. All my suggestions are legitimate and ethical. In this book you won't find methods for manipulating, faking and cheating. Strengthen your readers' bond with you, don't sabotage it. Most of the methods I suggest are free, although some incur expenses. You will definitely need to spend time. You can apply them all these techniques, or cherry-pick the ones you like now and keep the rest for another time or a different book. At the end of most chapters, I'm sharing mistakes I made and learnt from. They all seemed a good idea at the time. Rayne

From giveaways to review agencies (yes, they exist - which was news to me), she has tried all the ways I could think of to gain reviews - and some that hadn't occurred to me. She doesn't shy away from sharing both her successes and mistakes, which means I spent a lot of time nodding with sympathy while reading this. And some time cringing over past mistakes I've made.Furthermore, she never strays from the straight and narrow. More importantly, she explains clearly what the pitfalls of doing so entail - and what happened when she did stray. She also has some practical advice on things like how to write a cover letter, a sample email to send to reviewers and tips on sending your book after a giveaway, over a dozen authors sharing their own experience (including yours truly) and an excerpt of Rayne's book, "Why does my book not sell? 20 simple fixes."As a contributor to the book, I received a free copy with no obligation to post a review.

An invaluable guide By Terry Tyler 4.5 starsIf you're a self-published or indie press published author who has contemplated buying reviews, joining reviewing groups, or doing review swaps, or if you've been googling 'book bloggers' and are not sure where to start, consider spending 99p/$1.49 on this before you go any further!I've read a couple of Rayne Hall's other advice books, and what I like about them, this one included, is that she pulls no punches. If you've been at the marketing-your-own-books game for a while, you'll probably cringe at some of it, thinking "Ouch, I did that" - as does Rayne; she tells you about the mistakes she made so you don't make them too. This isn't theoretical advice; this is the real thing, from someone who's been there, done that, and bought the 'I've been scammed' t-shirt.The book goes deep into the dos and don'ts of review-getting practices I knew nothing about, like review agencies and reviews via blog tours, though I imagine her experiences will be of great interest to others who have contemplated using them. Best of all, she tells you exactly why you shouldn't join reviewing groups, swap with other writers, and pay for fakes ~ or even do unofficial 5* swaps with friends (you know, when Writer A thinks "I'll give Writers B, C and D 5* so that they'll all give me 5* back").When Rayne asked me to contribute to the book, she specified that I should write about how I get reviews, rather than say what not to do, and when I read the whole thing I understood why; people buy books like these to find out how to get positive results, not just to be told all the things they're doing wrong! There are plenty of good, practical suggestions, with positive action you can take. As with all advice books I didn't agree with all of it; I don't like the idea of asking for reviews on social networking sites, whereas Rayne finds it works well for her; however, there are right ways and wrong ways to do it, and she advises you of the right ones. I also felt that finding and building relationships with book bloggers could have been explored more - I love them, and often read several posts a day, as both a reader and a writer. As with all works of this nature, there will be some advice within that doesn't gel with how you work, but I think you'll find some real gems; I am putting one piece of advice into action today! If you've been looking at others' books and wondering how come they've got 40 reviews when you've only got 2, or if you're just starting to self-publish and haven't got a clue how to go about it, or even if you've got a fair number of reviews but would like more, I'd recommend this book. Please note: I contributed to this book at the request of the author and confirm that I have no financial interest in it. I was supplied with a review copy of the book at my own request.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A handy guide for authors of all stripes. By Ebony McKenna Ignore the really ordinary cover, this is a very useful book.As an author, I too want to get more reviews for my book. Hall is smart, writing this handy guide in easy-to-digest chunks. Each chapter takes the writer through the various proper, ethical ways of getting reviews. From who to ask, the right way to ask and what kind of response the writer might get. Each chapter ends with a list of advantages and disadvantages of using that kind of approach (ie, asking other writers for reviews, asking twitter followers for reviews etc) plus a 'mistakes I made and learnt from' section. These sections are where I nodded my head, because I've been there. I've never paid for a review, but I have bought 'promotions' that promised a blitz of reviews on 40+ blogs that ended up being reduced to about 20 just before they went live and then when the actually appeared, only 10 sites reviewed my book (and then they didn't post them anywhere else). Yes, getting reviews is a frustrating process. I would love to friend Rayne on facebook and twitter, but if I do that, this review will probably vanish! There's also a very handy chapter towards the end about how to deal with reviews once you get them, especially how to deal with negative reviews. (Step away from the keyboard is my motto!)Unfortunately there wasn't anything startling or new in this book that I hadn't tried or heard before. This is a little frustrating. However, it's also a good thing, because I know I've tried all the ethical avenues out there and it's not as if I've missed anything. I just have to keep trying and keep writing.
