Ormiston-smith Brief, concise and very much to the point, this useful little book shows the emerging (or even the established) writer how to set up a filing system that will support a rational and organised approach to book production and marketing.Although the title suggested to me more of a methodology, the book deals almost exclusively with infrastructure - with setting up and maintaining a file system that will both protect against data loss and facilitate efficient use of an author's resources.As a veteran of the I.T. industry, this is both a subject close to my heart and one with which I have often worked. A good physical organisation of data supports a far more effective work effort. I have never known this not to be the case.Although presented to the beginning writer, Medler does not 'talk down' to her readers, and this file system could be used by an author at any stage of his career. It offers a way out of chaos for those whose body of work has grown organically over a number of years, and although due to my own technical background I consider myself fairly well organised in terms of my data structures, I plan to adopt several of the features of Medler's system myself. Just the 'personal' folder on its own will, I believe, save me many hours of tedium.This series of books is free, I believe, to members of Ella Medler's website, and I certainly plan to be investigating other books in the series to find more hidden gems. I recommend this book whole-heartedly to anyone who has ever spent frustrating minutes (or hours) looking for something in his computer.

She has found a way to pursue her passion and has shared in this book, her “roadmap” to success but focused on the reader finding our own.I love that she explains in specific how to identify when something bigger is calling us forward, and discusses the subject of “change” in great detail. I also love the “Action task” - where the reader is encouraged to think about our own situation in order to realize our own path toward success!It was so inspiring to read about the author’s, as well as her interviewees stories and successes.If you’re unhappy at work, this book will show you how to prepare yourself for the changes and improvement you deserve!

Bees in Your Backyard is much more than a field guide. It introduces the natural history of bees along with the knowledge needed to identify their distinguishing morphological characters along with an innovative key to the major groups. All of the major genera anyone is likely to come across in Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico are here. I would have liked the distribution maps to be a bit larger, but this book is jam-packed with great information that will delight readers. The quality of the hundreds of photographic images by Wilson along with other contributors are outstanding. Wilson is a master of the macro photography technique of placing bees on white backgrounds, which makes them come alive as species portraits. I highly recommend this one-of-a-kind reference to our native bees for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students along with naturalists and gardeners who want to identify and understand our diverse bee faunas. Get this book, you won't be disappointed.

Well-written and comprehensive, it provides general information of bee morphology, biology and behavior. Then, it covers ALL the families and genera of bees in NA, what their identifying characters are, and provides detailed information of the biology of each genus. Great illustrations, and wonderful photographs of live bees. This won't allow you to identify most bees to species, but given that there are c. 4,000 species in NA, that is beyond the scope of the book. This book is a classic, there's nothing else like it. It will do more to increase the (interested) general public's knowledge about the diversity of bee than anything currently available. A must-have.

Excellent for the enthusiastic bee lover By squirrelly Wonderful new book that provides a wealth of information on bee biology, habitat requirements and, especially, bee identification. We are bee photographers and biologists, though not bee experts, and this is perfect for us. We have several other general books on bees but this one is far better than others for those who really want to learn more about bee families and genera of the US and Canada.

About the Author

Dr. Gary Greenberg earned his doctorate in developmental biology from University College London and later joined the faculty at the University of Southern California. Co-founder of Edge Scientific Instrument Corporation, he developed high-definition 3D light microscopes, for which he has been issued nineteen US. patents. He is currently Research Affiliate at the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy.

Carol Kiely is Adjunct Professor at Lehigh University and a lecturer in the Lehigh Microscopy School. Her latest work focuses on the study of lunar particles using a combination of light, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray microscopy.

Kate Clover is Gallery Program Manager at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul. She currently serves as education advisor for the International Sand Collectors Society.

First, the photos: they're beautiful and mesmerizing! I've always been fascinated by super-up-close photos (especially those freaky ones of bug mites and stuff that lives ON your skin or IN your hair), but never thought of, or realized, how intricate and beautiful grains of sand can be.Beyond the photos, I learned a lot about sand itself. How sand is made is interesting - and it's not just sand that makes up sand, so to speak! I especially liked all the places the book covers - sand from beaches, mountains, and more.Kids will love the photos and be really intrigued; adults will love the photos, too, and the science and information about sand.

An amazing book that will change the way you think about the beach By Jeff Serena It's the rare book that exposes the fascinating reality behind a seemingly prosaic subject. The Secrets of Sand does that for sand, a ubiquitous substance that under the microscope turns out to be composed of a startling array of tiny mineral grains, seashells, crystals--even bones and plastic--often polished to a gem-like luster by the action of waves and wind. The authors look at sand from beaches and dunes from around the world, explaining how the sand reveals the geologic and environmental history of each place. There's even a chapter on lunar sand collected by the Apollo missions, showing how the extraterrestrial environment creates sand of a character that cannot be replicated on earth. This is a terrific book for anyone interested in geology and the environment--or just curious about that stuff between your toes on the beach. The color photography is astonishing.

The text is well-written, as far as it goes, and the photographs are excellent, some superb. But the whole book has a sort of adult gee-whiz-this-is-so-cool tone. The only secrets are that at magnification and with Gary Greenberg's sophisticated techniques, the sand is revealed to be the opposite of the uniform feeling of sugar granules underfoot. There is every conceivable shape and color. The sand is diverse--from volcanic and barrier islands, river sandbars, desert dunes (and some dunes in the US, such as the Lake Michigan dunes), freshwater lake shores. The creation process of various sands is briefly described--abrasion by wave action, river currents, rain, wind, glacial action and more.I was hoping to read more about the geological processes at work in places like beaches and sand dunes. This book disappoints in that regard. It's really a picture book with fairly good commentary. It's a slender book and can be read quickly. The various sand pictures will remind some readers of modern painters, particularly Jackson Pollock.

By Jean Baldridge Yates Crafter's Market 2016: How to Sell Your Crafts and Make a Living, edited by Kerry Bogert, is a terrific source guide for crafters who have crossed the line from hobbyist to professional and want to check out everything about selling. First the reader will learn how to use the book, including how not to jump in too fast, and why it is good to winnow down the listings and articles which pertain specifically to you before you make a move.There are explanations of how to work with the listings, how to pay attention to Copyright information, and how to look for specialties and niche markets.The first section contains an overview of business basics and one on copyright basics. I wish I had had this book when I began my business, years ago. These are so clearly explained and very helpful. Articles and interviews follow, each one tackling a different aspect of being a businessperson in the arts and crafts arena. For example, the first one is by Janet Davila, and is titled "Establishing a Career in the Arts".The second one, by Abby Glassenberg, is called "Newsletter Know-How". As we all seem to connect with our buyers online, e-mail marketing, as Abby calls it, is an essential part of modern selling. She has some wonderful tips.Then there is a great article for those of us in the knitting business, and one on "Time Sucks" which means all those things you and I do which simply waste our time instead of getting things done. I smiled at that one, written by Meighan O'Toole, but I had to admit her tips and the resources she offers on how to move forward were excellent.Kerry Bogert herself writes, "Tips for a Successful First Craft Show". It is terrific to read this all laid out, whether you have been in a craft show or not.I don't know which parts of the first section of articles will resonate most with you but don't worry, it is all in here. It includes all the main crafts. too, and touches on everything right through writing a book. The interview with Carter Seibels Singh as well is enlightening. There is nothing self indulgent in this very large book. Everything you see here truly belongs here.The second section lists off the industry shows, and after that come more local shows and fairs for the reader to explore.If you know how far you are willing to travel, you can find shows and fairs pretty close to where you live, if you are interested in selling that way. All the information you need to get started is in this part of the book.After this comes a part on online marketplaces. It is eyeopening how many of these there are!Very complete sections on book publishers and magazines follow this. There is a lot you can do to get your work seen in all sorts of ways.An overview of online communities comes next, with specifics.These are great for networking, learning things, and getting support.A list of retreats is included after this.Finally, you see a regional craft shows by state. Canada and the UK are included here as well.This mammoth undertaking finishes with a subject index. You can peruse this and find anything you wish to pursue from general crafts and crafting, antiques, aprons, assemblage, right on through to digital art, fiber arts and knitting. I am just list some of the things I saw in the index, which is totally wonderful. The last artisan subject in this index is yarn arts.This book is a must if you are an artist and wish to sell your work. This is an excellent resource for all things art and craft from events to online sales and promotion. What I really like is how extensive the general index is in the back. Often times you don't know what you don't know so by going through a book that is organized in different ways you can find new things you might have overlooked by simply sticking to the sections you think are the ones relevant to what you make. I am also excited to learn about new shows in my area and will use this as a resource when traveling to find out about other shows.

About the Author Amy Ferris is an author, editor, screenwriter, and playwright. She has contributed to numerous magazines and literary anthologies, and her memoir Marrying George Clooney: Confessions From a Midlife Crisis was adapted into an off-Broadway play in 2012. Ferris co-edited (with Hollye Dexter) Dancing at the Shame Prom, and authored the young adult novel A Greater Goode. Ferris has written for film and television, and was nominated for best screenplay for Funny Valentines. She serves on the advisory board of the Women’s Media Center and is an instructor for the San Miguel Writers’ Conference. She lives in northeast Pennsylvania with her husband, Ken, and two cats who think they’re human girls.

Isolation gets a few shades lighter with this brave and beautiful book By Nina Gaby As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I sit with patients and their depressions, their anxieties, their hopelessness every day. My toolkit has now expanded with the publication of Ferris's "Shades of Blue".... I can tell people about this book, I can encourage them to become a part of a larger narrative, possibly begin to more deeply explore- or possibly even write - their own stories. They can find another way to stay present in this world by reading the inspirational, stigma-busting, brave, life-affirming (no, life-saving) stories of these writers that Ferris has assembled. The crushing isolation of depression gets a few shades lighter each time someone realizes..."I'm not alone. I'm connected to a bigger picture." Thank you for this beautiful and necessary book.

I didn't count on the immediate recognition of empathy and identification with the editor Amy Ferris' introduction: 'The Balls-out Truth About Depression'. I didn't expect to be so sucked into such stories of struggle, despair, loss, renewal, irony, acceptance, hope and even amusement in one tragically absurd story of rock bottom in Samantha White's: 'The Dialectics of Suicide.' Or absolutely haunted by Jimmy Camp's: 'A Slip Of The Noose' and Jenna Stone's: 'Upon Being Told To Be True To Myself.' The order of the stories is quite perfect, ending with the attainable and sustainable hope written about in Pam L. Houston's: 'A Kind Of Quiet Most People Have Forgotten.'I read somewhere that thus book was conceived in the wake of Robin Williams' suicide, even in response to it. It's an important book that sheds much-needed light on the lingering stigma of depression, suicide, mental illness and feeling blue.

By Tom McMasters-Stone Millions of people suffer from depression, many of them undiagnosed. The beauty and scope of this book, and the value of understanding more completely what people go through, and that we don't walk through this disease alone, is invaluable. I have observed the struggles and successes of many such people and this fabulous author brings the reality of it right into your den, your living room, or your bedroom.
