In 1957 “Peggy Sue,” by newcomer Buddy Holly and The Crickets, rose to #3 on the charts, quickly generating a gold record. Sung by hundreds of artists from Connie Francis to John Lennon, it would become a classic. By 2015 it positioned music legend Buddy Holly in Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 30 Songwriters of All Time. Only a single red rose left at Buddy’s grave each year gave fans a clue “the girl next door” was real. Peek over a teenager’s shoulder as she writes in her diary about falling in love with a musician and the world of rock ’n roll. When she is immortalized in song, watch as the world falls in love with “Peggy Sue.” Because she was there Peggy Sue can narrate one of the most compelling stories in music history, including “the day the music died.” She rips rumors apart, shares scores of personal photos, and unveils intimate details never revealed in book or film. Follow young Peggy Sue through her confusion about love and devotion, her prophetic nightmares of impending doom, a plane crash that shattered her future, and the surprising circumstances of the accident’s aftermath. Then accompany Peggy Sue on a rocket ride to Hollywood where The Crickets build a new identity working with rock ’n roll greats like Bobby Vee, the Everly Brothers, and Roy Orbison. Stay with her as she struggles to escape from a life drawn by fate, to an unyielding determination “to keep the music alive.” Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue tells a story of lost innocence, dreams, tragedy, and destiny.

About the Author PEGGY SUE GERRON was a teenager in Lubbock, Texas, with Buddy Holly when his hit song, “Peggy Sue,” made her an iconic part of rock ’n roll history. Today her namesake, “the first international rock anthem,” still hits the record charts in one part of the world or another, leading a Holland newspaper to dub Peggy Sue “the most famous woman in the world.” Peggy Sue’s tireless efforts “to keep the music alive” helped found the Buddy Holly Center, the Buddy Holly Festival, and the Crossroads of Texas Festival in Lubbock, drawing thousands from around the world to Buddy Holly’s hometown. She now works in Lubbock to prevent domestic violence and drug abuse. GLENDA CAMERON earned her M.A. from Texas Tech University, trained in substance abuse counseling, and taught school for more than thirty years. She coordinated several music festivals in Lubbock, co-founded the Rapunzel anti-drug program and RADAR TOWER, Inc. for addicted youth, and co-produced “Where Are They Now,” a VH1 Documentary, “Jerry Naylor: The Rockabilly Legends.” PEGGY SUE and GLENDA co-hosted a radio talk show, RAVE ON, filling the Texas airwaves for many years.

Interesting behind the scenes information not found elsewhere By Midwest Reviewer I bought the hardbound copy of this book in 2008, signed by both authors. It's a good book with a lot of interesting information not found elsewhere, and difficult to put down.Peggy Sue's recollections of events 50 years earlier are generally believable, and there are different perspectives here about Buddy Holly, her husband Jerry Allison, producer and manager Norman Petty, and Buddy's short-term wife, Maria Elena, than found in any other biography. Peggy Sue describes her husband as being a partier, adulterer, and alcoholic. She paints a warmer picture of Norman Petty than have other biographers, indicating that Buddy Holly continued his association with him and was making plans with Petty up until the end of his life. As far as Maria Elena, per Peggy Sue she had a definite attitude and was Buddy's "Yoko". After she met and married Buddy, the Crickets soon broke up and Buddy moved to New York. He made demo tapes in his New York apartment. Then followed his tragic death. Exactly the same scenario happened with John Lennon. Plus the miscarriages that both Maria Elena and Yoko suffered. That is, if Maria Elena was actually pregnant or just thought she might have been. I have read elsewhere that Maria Elena's pregnancy was never confirmed, and she didn't even see a doctor when she allegedly had a miscarriage in the bathroom, plus no one in the Holley family had known anything about this at the time. Maria Elena told the story of her purported pregnancy many years after Buddy died.Although I really like the book and all the behind the scenes information, she tends to paint a picture of both Buddy Holly and especially herself as poised, mature, wise and clear-thinking adults in every situation she describes. Peggy Sue was a teenager at the time, and how she states she responded to other people is just too "wise beyond her years" for a teenager. And she makes some questionable claims, such as Buddy Holly stopping an elevator between floors about 3 months after marrying Maria Elena to confide in Peggy Sue that he had a lawyer drawing up divorce papers. If that is true, it's sort of odd that Buddy would have continued to live with Maria Elena for the following couple months before his death. She says he also told her to divorce his pal and drummer Jerry Allison (who she generally has nothing good to say about), and mentions that Buddy Holly attempted to be intimate with her and implies a couple times that he maybe was interested in marrying her.Another problem is that the book is filled with quotations of conversations that took place 50 years earlier. She says she kept a journal, but unless she was carrying a tape recorder or taking shorthand in a notebook while talking to people at the time, all of the conversations within quotation marks are fictitious. No one has the ability to recollect verbatim, word for word, specific conversations between several people that took place decades ago - certainly not after 50 years. In this respect, the book is more a novelization based on facts.Nevertheless, the book is essential and very worthwhile for Buddy Holly fans as it provides behind the scenes information and a different perspective from previous biographies of Buddy Holly. I'm glad she wrote her story.

Fielding I was 8 years old "the Day the Music died", but I remember it well. I also saw both ''The Buddy Holly Story" movie and the stage play of the same name. This book gives a contrasting testimonial to what ACTUALLY occurred from the person best abled to testify. Therefore, I was anxious to read Peggy Sue's viewpoint of the story regarding the meteoric rise of Buddy Holly and The Crickets, and another opinion of producer Norman Petty and what led to the tragedy north of Clear Lake, Iowa. It also clarifies much of Peggy Sue's relationship with both Holly and her ex-husband, Jerry Allison. To me, it also clarified what I consider the strange relationship between Holly and his bride, Maria Santiago. This book is a 'must read' for anyone who is interested in the first decade of rock & roll. It's ONLY fault is that Peggy Sue's diary contains nothing about Buddy's earliest records when he recorded as Buddy & Bob. Nevertheless, that doesn't detract from this wonderfully written book. Buy it !!! It was difficult to put down !

Ehe Best of Digital Photography By Al Kunz The book entitled ‘The Best of the Digital Photography Book Series: is a compilation of a five book series written by Scott Kelby a couple of years ago. In this volume he has taken what he considers to be the best content from the five previous books. The purpose of this book is to equip the amateur photographer with the knowledge that a pro photographer would employ in a similar photo situation. At the outset, I must tell you that this is a volume packed with useful information presented in a concise format that makes it easy to read and to later retrieve information. Let’s look at the hard facts first. This book is smaller than most, measuring 6 in. by 9 in. It is a soft covered book of 268 pages, well suited to inclusion in your camera bag and after you read and digest the information within (that’s where you will want to put this book). As of this writing it retails on Amazon for $14.99. It is rated at a Beginner level however, I would include Intermediate as well. It consists of 14 Chapters, each covering a major facet of digital photography. I won’t belabor you with the names of all those facets but it includes chapters on Flash, Lenses, Portraits, Weddings, Sports, Landscape and so on.The book is unique in that each chapter consists of a series of one page fact sheets. That is, Kelby takes one subject relevant to the chapter, includes a picture illustration and the rest of the page is text concerning the page subject. For example, page 28 in the chapter entitled “The Truth About Lenses” is labeled “When to Use a Wide Angle Lens”. It contains a picture of a typical wide angle lens and the rest of the page contains text relating to a wide angle lens, its description and its uses. The next page covers a different lens and its uses. It’s a unique style to cover a vast subject like Digital Photography but I found it very successful. It presents a particular subject, displays it, and then describes it and its uses in a concise and no nonsense fashion. It fosters quick learning and makes future reference much easier as well. It’s just the facts with little extraneous material to get through. Each chapter ranges from 15 to 25 pages in length. It makes this book a fast reader and one that the reader can put down or pick up with little loss of place.Kelby also provides a web site on which he posts videos illustrating some of the Photoshop processes described in the book. After reading the book in its entirety, I went on the website. I was fairly well disappointed when several of the videos provided played without any accompanying audio. You could see the cursor going here and there on the screen but nothing audible described what was happening. The thought occurred to me that this was not a very good policy for Kelby to tout this web site only to find it partially crippled. I decided to follow this up and went on the Kelbyone website and managed to speak to a Customer Service agent. I described to her what I had found. She looked at the same site and confirmed my findings and stated the she would contact the technical folks to get it repaired. I asked if she would get back to me so that I could view the site contents when it was operating properly. Within an hour or two she sent me a message that the problem with the audio was cleared and thanked me for bringing it to their attention. It does a soul good when you experience a session with a person that works in “Customer Service” and that person lives up to every letter in that title. In summary, if you want a book that provides a bundle of information concerning the many aspects of Digital Photography and does so in a concise manner, this is your book. It is chock full of useful information that will greatly benefit the average digital photographer. As a bonus, the book can accompany the photographer in a camera bag for ready reference in the field. As stated previously, it is also backed by a willing and competent Customer Service organization. All that for about 15 bucks. What a deal!

His Digital Photography series is a constant "Go-To Companion" and this book is his "Best of the Best".I would rate my photography skills as "advanced intermediate", (probably a 6-handicap for those of you talking in golf terms), and Scott's style is simple, comprehensive and mixes in his sense of humor - something I appreciate. If you ever saw a photo and wondered how it was done, this book is for you!

I have been learning from him for years and I have most of his books on Photoshop and Lightroom. Fantastic source on Hibernate By Hasan Siddiqui If you're looking for a source on Hibernate that dives much deeper than the online tutorials but at the same time can also be used as a reference, look no further than this book. I've probably read about a third of the text (skipping around chapters and looking at the areas I am particularly interested in), and I've learned quite a few new things that I had incorrect assumptions about. The only negative I can think of is that this title is high dollar. If you're just trying to get up and running for a toy project, you can probably skip this purchase and refer to the plethora of online tutorials. However, if you want to get past the tip of the iceberg and build a deep understanding of Hibernate and all of its nuances, this book will serve you extremely well.

I really appreciated the book long tutorial. The author describe the ins and outs of the technology. I particularly appreciated the optimization part.

Oh well except that it wasn't written exclusively by Dolph Ziggler, but he was mentioned a few times so that's good enough for me. Immediately after I finished reading this book I did 3 things. 1. Threw away my $200 Beats by Dre Headphones 2. googled "Clark Duke + Red Wine" 3. Drove to the nearest Planet Fitness and took a huge dump right by the front door, cause that's what a Hardbody would do.

No more boring retrospectives By Gojko Retrospectives are one of those practices that seem simple on paper, but are difficult to sustain over a long period. Many teams just get into a habit of running the same boring session over and over, and what was supposed to be a spark for improvement turns into bureaucracy and a chore. Tom and Ben present a ton of ideas for reinvigorating retrospective sessions that will help teams keep the focus on continual improvement. This book seems best for people with some experience in agile software delivery, that already know the basics and are looking for additional ideas and suggestions. It will probably be most useful for those in a scrum master or team lead roles, consultants, coaches and professional facilitators. The ideas in the book vary from generally applicable to experimental, so I expect that anyone can find 3-4 interesting new topics or suggestions regardless of the level of experience.

Great team companion By Marcus Hammarberg This book contains a lot of great, thought provoking, battle-hardened idea and practices around how to improve and keep your retrospective relevant. The author share from their vast and solid experience a mix of thoughts that can be used directly, practically but also some that you will have in the back in your head that might change the way you approach the whole area of process improvement.I would think that this book will make almost every team happy as a companion, close to the team area. Pick up and get some inspiration around how to make your retrospective relevant.A longer , more detailed review can be found here http://www.marcusoft.net/2015/12/book-review--quick-ideas-to-improve-your-retrospectives.html

Bison is a general-purpose parser generator that converts an annotated context-free grammar into a deterministic LR or generalized LR (GLR) parser employing LALR(1) parser tables. As an experimental feature, Bison can also generate IELR(1) or canonical LR(1) parser tables. Once you are proficient with Bison, you can use it to develop a wide range of language parsers, from those used in simple desk calculators to complex programming languages. Bison is upward compatible with Yacc: all properly-written Yacc grammars ought to work with Bison with no change. Anyone familiar with Yacc should be able to use Bison with little trouble. You need to be fluent in C or C++ programming in order to use Bison or to understand this manual. Java is also supported as an experimental feature. We begin with tutorial chapters that explain the basic concepts of using Bison and show three explained examples, each building on the last. If you don’t know Bison or Yacc, start by reading these chapters. Reference chapters follow, which describe specific aspects of Bison in detail. Bison was written originally by Robert Corbett. Richard Stallman made it Yacc-compatible. Wilfred Hansen of Carnegie Mellon University added multi-character string literals and other features. Since then, Bison has grown more robust and evolved many other new features thanks to the hard work of a long list of volunteers. This edition corresponds to version 3.0.4 of Bison.

It doesn't try to be more so it is succinct and efficient. You can find just as good information on the internet (and in fact I believe this is exactly the same information as is on the web, just printed). It is nicely printed (nice paperback binding) and inexpensive. If you happen to appreciate printed manuals, as I do, then you may appreciate having this on your shelf for when you work with BISON.

    • Quickly identify the best framework for a specific problem and select the most appropriate solution to suit your requirements
    • This practical guide will help you implement a complete REST-based API from scratch

    Who This Book Is For

If you are a Scala developer with some Scala experience and you want to get an overview of the frameworks that are available in the Scala world, then this book is perfect for you. You need to have a general knowledge of REST and Scala. This book is great for senior Scala (or other language) developers who are looking for a good REST framework to use together with Scala.

    What You Will Learn

    • Set up a development environment to easily develop and test REST services
    • Discover the different ways in which you can create REST services with Scala
    • See and explore the different approaches taken by popular REST frameworks
    • Get to know more about a variety of available Scala frameworks such as Finch, Unfiltered, Scalatra, Akka-HTTP, and Play
    • Discover how to create a REST service on top of each framework discussed in this book
    • Create HTTP clients using the frameworks in this book
    • Make an informed decision about which framework to use in a specific situation
    • Set up authentication for your REST services

    In Detail

RESTful web services are built to work best on the web. Scala provides a rich set of language constructs and advanced frameworks that you can use to create REST services. However, using Scala and these tools can be a complex task. There are many frameworks available and choosing the wrong framework or approach can cost a lot of time and lead to much frustration. By exploring the most popular Scala REST frameworks, you can make sure you choose the right tool.

RESTful Web Services with Scala begins with a brief explanation of the REST architecture and its implementation in Scala, as well as the impact that REST architecture has on Scala applications. You will understand the advantages of building Scala web services and how existing Scala applications can take advantage of REST. This book will teach developers about the different programming paradigms available in the Scala world to create RESTful services by exploring the most popular Scala-oriented REST frameworks. It discusses the various facets of RESTful web services such as building scalable APIs, working with standards like HTTP and MIME, designing the architecture, securing the web service, and more.

With this book, you will be able to build RESTful web services with various Scala frameworks such as Finch, Unfiltered, Scalatra, Akka-HTTP, and Play. You will create basic REST services using frameworks and then extend the REST services with custom functionality. By the end of the book, you'll be able to decide which framework is best suited for your requirements. We finish by looking at how we can use a number of advanced features provided by these frameworks, such as security, creating HTTP clients, working with HATEOAS, and more.

    Style and approach

This book follows a practical approach where we implement a REST API using each of the frameworks discussed. This book is filled with rich examples and code so you can understand and implement the features of every framework.

McClellan I waffled back and forth between 2 and 3 stars because I wasn't sure if, perhaps, my expectations just weren't in line with what the book claims to be. The truth is, the book gives an overview of the most popular RESTful frameworks out there for Scala right now, and I was looking for something a bit more in depth. But, I'm going with 2 stars because even if what you want is an overview of the popular frameworks out there right now, this book gives you only the briefest of introductions. You won't finish this book and then come away feeling like you can write an idiomatic Scala RESTful API in any of these frameworks afterward. You won't even come close. If you have literally never worked with REST concepts before, this book does touch on what those concepts actually mean, but even then I just can't recommend it.Had the author gone into more detail on each framework and expanded the book to include pulling all of the concepts together in a larger, non-trivial example application it'd be great As is, look elsewhere, imho.

Landscape is a subject of seemingly infinite variation and imaginative possibility. The Paul G. Allen Family Collection reveals a marked interest in innovative artists' reflections on the land and sea. The works in the collection span over four hundred years, chronicling key developments in painting and art history. This book uses the Allen Family Collection to explore the evolution of landscape painting through the ages. The artists in the collection represent a who's who of masters of the landscape tradition. The book opens with a series of masterpieces by Jan Brueghel that serve as a starting point for understanding the historical trajectory of landscape painting, before moving on to 18th-century artists Canaletto and Moran and Impressionists such as Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Monet. Rounding out the survey are works by modern and contemporary visionaries including Max Ernst, Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, and David Hockney. Thirty-nine paintings in all are featured in book, each accompanied by detailed essays that comprise a full discussion of the formal intellectual development of the landscape form.

A delight for landscape painting lovers By applewood This coffee table sized catalogue of the current national tour of the Paul Allen Family collection of landscape paintings is a beautifully done presentation of the 39 painting exhibition. I had the pleasure of seeing this show in Portland Oregon earlier this month, and it will go on to show in four more venues in the US (next year in - DC Feb-May, Minneapolis July-Sept, New Orleans Oct-Jan 2017 and finally back home to Seattle Feb-May 2017). The show includes some really great pieces and is well worth seeing if you get the chance. This book does a very good job of presenting it if you can't see it in person, or just want to study a wide selection of quality works in more detail. The paintings cover the full range of natural landscapes in realistic, impressionist, surrealist and modern abstract styles and include works from the past four centuries (1625 to 2008).The book begins with an interview with Mr. Allen about his artistic interests and then a helpful essay by Chiyo Ishikawa on the historical background of these artists and their works. The bulk of the book is devoted to documenting each piece of the exhibition, arranged chronologically with a page of detailed description followed by a reproduction of the full piece and then often a two page larger reproduction of a detailed section. So usually we get 4 pages for each painting, and this gives a glimpse of how we'd want to see it in person - an overview (with historical context) and then a chance to get right up close and see the details. Of course what we miss in a book of photographs are the brush stroke details….but, such is the wonder and special quality of a live show. Some of these paintings work better than others in this magnified format, for example seeing details of Claude Monet's large washes of muted color didn't do much for me, and several of the enlargements lack crispness. A few of these painting didn't even do it for me in person, but the vast majority are both beautiful and dramatic as well as being masterfully executed. And several of them (for me these include the Jan Brueghler the Younger's 5 Senses series, Gustav Klimet's "Birch Forest", Maxfield Parrish's "Riverbank, Autumn", Gerhard Richter's "Vesuvius" and April Gornik's "Lake Light") are worth the price of admission alone.Overall a 4+ star quality presentation of a wonderful exhibit.

What do most people think of Idaho? Well, see, that's the problem - they don't think of Idaho. Despite its breathtaking natural beauty and the fact that it's crammed to the gills with eccentrics and freethinkers, Idaho may as well be the moon as far as the rest of America is concerned.

Jim Goad recently spent a week in Idaho mingling with state troopers, political extremists, collegiate progressives, and heartbreakingly friendly locals. Spending most of the week in the wilderness allowed him to examine one of the most pervasive yet ignored forms of cultural bigotry - the endless disdain that "urban supremacists" have for rural people. In this case, the countryside wins by a landslide.

Twenty five years ago on a family road trip through Yellowstone to move out west, we passed through its towns boasting of population 30 and fewer. It struck me as a nice place of watering holes, probably perch and pike fishing, rodeos, county fairs and porch sitting. When feared author of the zine Answer ME! , The Redneck Manifesto and a weekly Takimag column explores there though, I'm scratching my head. It so happens that this is a love letter to the state of Idaho. In photo-essay formats this almost reads like a parody of travel writing. That's because as the author puts it in the introduction, why would anyone want to go to Idaho? For example, did you know Idaho contains the nation's largest untrammeled wilderness within its borders, the Frank Church River of No Return wilderness area. Noting that Church blew the lid off the NSA Watergate FBI spying scandal of the 1970s, the region was set aside for freedom lovers presumably who value nature instead of a surveillance nanny state--that goes hand in hand with technological tools.A few exchanges with people on the road here and there but mainly this short work is Whitmanesque descriptions of springs, babbling brooks and meadows, country breakfasts, and sky. Goad availing himself of urban burdens (for Whitman it was taxes, for Goad its pc/leftists and hate speech witch hunts) within cell phone communication becomes so transcendental that speaking of the land and Nature. This is the kind of thing you wouldn't expect from Goad if you're one of his readers. It's bucolic food for thought that I haven't really let myself soak in enough yet. I can't really figure out what I read but I have to recommend the book for its novelty value alone.I'm also considering purchasing a plot nearby Yellowstone.

By Future Past Leave it to Jim Goad to take a subject that you couldn't possibly care less about and watch as he uses his wit and unique voice to open your eyes as to what you're missing out on. I've read articles of his before on subjects I've never cared about (Nascar and Bo Diddley, for example) and each time I came away with a new outlook. Seriously, the Idaho Department of Commerce should adopt this book right away, what with the tantalizing pictures coupled with the author's wistful descriptions of lands you thought were only in New Zealand after you watched Lord of the Rings. Goad's writing voice also draws you in fully and reading goes by awfully quick. Reading the book, you get a sense of how relaxed the author was while visiting Idaho. At the end, I found myself wanting more, similar as to how Goad feels when he realizes his trip is up and he has to leave Idaho.

I read his book "Redneck Manifesto" twenty years ago, it was an eye opening book for me. It obliterated many wrong assumptions I had about some of the history of America. His style of writing is invigorating in its energy. I started reading anything I could find by Jim Goad. I highly recommend searching for his zine "Answer Me!". I think there are only four issues, but they are all packed with excellent writing. "Potatoes on the Moon" did not get five stars from me because it was too short. Not enough Goad. We want more Goad!

Nature preschools are a "hot topic" in the world of early childhood education and David Sobel truly delivers with this book! I have long enjoyed Sobel's work, but whereas his books typically focus on grade school, this book benefits the smallest of our learners. Sobel dives into the history and practice of nature preschools, shares compelling stories and arguments for how children learn through play, and makes the most indoorsy of us all want to schlep through the mud and catch tadpoles with our bare hands. In a world dominated by electronics and an ever growing fast-paced society, this book slows down the modern life and returns us to a childhood that is carefree and at one with the earth. This book does not shy away from the hardships educators face in implementing an outdoor curriculum, rather it embraces them as the beauty of an unpredictable world in which children need to be taught resiliency. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in nature or children, for they truly go hand in hand as anecdotes in the book remind us that, given the opportunity, children embrace their hunter gatherer roots and become engaged in the world around them. In a country that lacks true engagement and interest in anything, one could not be better off in embracing mother earth and teaching the next generation how to love the world before we ask them to save it. Well done, David! This book is beautiful, compelling, and a true gift to early childhood education.
