About the Author Kim Brauer was raised on Tuna Helper and delighted by 'those tiny cabbages!' when she discovered Brussels sprouts in a college cafeteria. She started cooking while living in Kuwait and visiting Turkey, and later left a career in education to tackle culinary school and become a line cook. She lives in Seattle with her girlfriend and way too many cats.

There are lots of books out there about cooking schools, and which program might be right for you, and plenty of books that help you learn to scale a recipe (or scale a fish). This is not that book. This guide is more insightful than that. It’s an inside look into how to kick ass as a culinary student, and also end up with the kind of job you most want after you graduate. It’s easy to read and well organized if you (like me) skip around a lot. The “no bulls***” part is right! This book cracks open the many misconceptions about what culinary school is like – especially for career-changers (like me). I wish this book would've been available when I was younger. It includes tips & tricks from lots of chefs and instructors, and is super entertaining to read. (The author’s snarky wit made me snort-laugh throughout. The glossary alone is worth your bucks.) If you want to get real about how to thrive in cooking school (and beyond), I recommend this guidebook.

Miss Brauer tells it like it is culinary school and the restaurant world. To anyone looking to join that world: pick up this book and a sense of humility and you will have 2 worthy tools to help you succeed on your quest.
