This was one of the few books that was not dreadfully boring to read (and I've read a lot).What the book does is take each letter of the alphabet and comment (and sometimes rant) about a particular topic starting with that letter (e.g., A is for Adverb, E is for emotion, etc.). This format is fantastic, since it forced the author to be pithy and distill into a few paragraphs the essential features of said topic.Not only was it helpful and instructive, but it was exceptionally entertaining. I haven't read a writing book this witty since Stephen King's "On Writing." You'll laugh, I doubt you'll cry, and you may hurl a curse word or two at the author when she disagrees with you.A must read for all writers.

Aside from the insights and humor, which it's chalked full of, there is a wonderful down-to-earch quality which makes me feel I'm at my local coffee shop conversing with the author over a cup of chai. Whether I agree with all her opinions or not, I found myself challenged to think more about the issues of adverbs, swear words, and yes, even zombies! But the greatest benefit I received from this book was encouragement. So many times I stopped, took a breath, and thought, "Yes, she's right. I can do this writing thing. Just gotta keep going!" And that's worth its weight in gold when the journey ahead is packed full of obstacles. I'd recommend this book for any writer, especially those who just want a laugh and a boost to keep going. And let's face it: What writer does't need that? I give the book two thumbs up! :-)

About the Author

Mike Barlow is an award-winning journalist, author and communications strategy consultant. Since launching his own firm, Cumulus Partners, he has represented major organizations in numerous industries.

Mike is coauthor of The Executive’s Guide to Enterprise Social Media Strategy (Wiley, 2011) and Partnering with the CIO: The Future of IT Sales Seen Through the Eyes of Key Decision Makers (Wiley, 2007).He is also the writer of many articles, reports, and white papers on marketing strategy, marketing automation, customer intelligence, business performance management, collaborative social networking, cloud computing, and big data analytics.

Over the course of a long career, Mike was a reporter and editor at several respected suburban daily newspapers, including The Journal News and the Stamford Advocate. His feature stories and columns appeared regularly in The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Miami Herald, Newsday, and other major US dailies.

Ryan It hurts me to give it 3 stars and I feel obligated to point out that I'm an author myself and a data scientist both of which I suspect color my judgment. As an author, I'd be inclined to give it a 5. It's very well written, well edited and while parts or it seem a little disorganized, he did a very good job writing it.I received a review copy of the book so I am further inclined to cut him some slack b/c I was expecting it to be a little more focused but the 'cobbled together' vibe it has is precisely b/c it's a collection of essays. That's critical to note before buying the book. They're good essays, they're well written, but this isn't something that someone took from concept to product.As a practicing data scientist, I found it frustrating. This field didn't really exist 10 years ago (it's hard to say exactly when it started and people were certainly doing what we know refer to as 'data science' for quite a while, but there weren't job ads or college programs for data science until fairly recently). So if you want to know what data science is and be familiar with the trendy terminology being thrown around in the CIO space these days, this will get you there. It's a bit paradoxical b/c as fast as the field is changing, many things are outdated by the time they're published. On the other hand, books like SuperCrunchers or Natural Language Processing w/ Python are a few years old and still completely relevant.If you're a data scientist I think you'll find this underwhelming or at least dated. If you're a manager or CIO/CTO/CDO trying to decipher the current iteration of buzzword bingo going on around the field, it'll get you there in a quick and easy fashion. The book doesn't purport to make you an expert on the field or teach you the finer points of say, deep learning but it does give you an overview of what the field is all about and what people are doing with it.As soon as I hit the Submit button I'm going to feel guilty for being too harsh on him, there's a lot to like about this book and he clearly did a lot right in terms of writing it, but if you're interested enough in the subject to buy a book on it, you'll probably want something a little more substantive.

Not limited to a specific type of analytics, or software applications, or the deprecated term "Big Data"-- This collection of essays touches on the emerging Industrial Internet, the world wide Maker Movement, fading divisions between software and hardware, tools such as Hadoop and Machine Learning, and pervasive issues such as Data Security and Governmental Regulation.Highly recommended, blends the insights of an early participant with the overview of a knowledgeable journalist.

It isn’t a bad book by any stretch of the imagination By Jerry Saperstein I should have read the description of the book more carefully before I ordered it because it isn’t what I thouth it would be. This is a book of essays written over the past several years by Mike Barlow, a journalist. The subtitle declares it a work “Exploring Predictive Analytics, Machine Learning, Digital Manufacturing, and Supply Chain Optimization”. I don’t think it wil be remembered in five years and maybe not even three. It isn’t a bad book by any stretch of the imagination. Rather it addresses a set of subjects where the velocity of change is so great that today’s ideas may be obsolete within months. Given that, Barlow attempts to explain, illustrate and demonstrate what “data science” is. Simply put, “data science” is the contemporary way f viewing the world around us. Not very long ago, people like Elmo Roper, George Gallop and Arthur Nielsen attempted to explain the world to politicians and marketers through interviews expressed as polls. Procor & Gamble examined consumers through counting how many cans ansd boxes moved off the grocery sore shelf. Now every transaction of every kind is memorialized as a statistic somewhere, giving rise to the basis of “big data”. But who will analyze and interpret it? How will they do it? Why should they do it? It’s a book of generalities and a pretty decent introduction to big data and data science. In many cases, what the author puts forth are ruinations as opposed to hard science, providing grist for discussion if you can actually find someone else interested in this subject. Barlow covers a lot of territory and, remember, this is a collection of essays, so sometimes interesting points are raised and simply disappear forever in succeeding sections. But Barlow writes well, obviously has an enquiring mind and asks a lot of questions which, one way or another, he answers. As an introduction to “big data” and “data science”, this is an entertaining and informative book. It will not make you an expert, but it wil help you recognize one.Jerry

The book is elegantly written, which to me is reflective of his life. It is full of interesting and applicable information. I use this book first by asking myself a personal question, then pulling a card from the Oracle of Kabbalah card deck, and then reading the message the book offers. It's fun and educational!

I suggest new readers also include the Mini Guide and Cards as well. This book reminds me of the IChing, offering insight into the questions we ask ourselves. While I am not Jewish this book resonates much more with me. It is thoughtful and gives me another way to see my world. The Divine, or if you like our intuition, speaks to us in many ways. This is a lovely way to explore, and perhaps receive, the answers to your questions.

About the Author John "Bones" Rodriguez, is an Actor, Author, and Solopreneur born and raised in New York where he lives with my wife and son. Yes- you HAVE seen him on TV. He does improv comedy for kids and adults, writes sketches and short plays, a little TV, and a ton of commercials. He has a very tiny IMDB, but has made over $400,000 as an actor from SAG so far. But it wasn't always like that. While many of his friends were waiting tables, temping, or quitting acting altogether for "real" jobs, he chose to learn how to make money without a day job. It took a while to learn (like everything worth doing), but after a while he was free to audition without asking anyone for permission or time off. He started booking acting work slowly, but soon people were calling often. It was the freedom that made it all possible, and that's what he teaches. After being asked a few thousand times why I didn't have a day job, he wrote the first edition of this book several years ago to help other actors create extra income and not have day jobs either. At first, people were very resistant to the idea, but as the internet matured, and they kept seeing him on TV more and more, they began to change their minds. His new-found freedom also allowed him to pursue another dream as an author, and he wrote "Captain Kirk's Guide to Women- How to Romance Any Woman in The Galaxy" for Simon and Schuster, in 2008. Again, it was the freedom that made it all possible. So YES- he know what he's talking about, and he gets paid from other interests aside from the "usual" acting gigs. Frigo Have you ever heard the expression, "When the student is ready, the teacher will show up"? Well, let me tell you that when I say I, as the student, was ready, Bones (John) Rodriguez showed up and through this book taught me that there is life outside of a job. One of the main points that he stresses in this book is that we don't have to trade our precious time for money. What a concept if you really think about it. He introduces a whole new way to make financial gain by building an online vending machine that even produces income while you're sleeping. This book is an incredibly quick read. I couldn't put it down. I was too excited by what I was learning. What he teaches in this book provides a solution to my current job situation. Thanks Bones!

No More Waiters has opened my mind to so many possibilities I never knew existed and I'm so happy I bought this. I'm in the process of creating my own business online right now and it's because of Bones Rodriguez and the way he breaks it down for you in this book. It's not a scam! There's a lot of stuff you'll learn but it's up to you to apply the knowledge. It's exciting! If you're tired of your day job and are interested in learning something new that will free up your time to live a more creative life buy it!

Only good for the clueless, NOT for the actor By Pen Name If you're an ASPIRING actor who has NEVER worked on set and have NO IDEA how the industry works, I guess this book will give you a semi-fair idea; but if you're already a working actor who is looking for more ways of making money and dedicate exclusively to your acting career, then this book is not for you. Total waste of my money and time. All he does is talk about how he's making money now and how he's so lucky... nothing resourceful. NOT a guide, at all! And btw, if you look up this guy on imdb, he literally has 4 credits as an actor, the last one dating back to 2010. He is not even a working actor.

Good Book for both Screenwriters and Filmmakers By Matthew Terry Spielberg, Hitchcock, Truffaut, Tarantino, Coppola – there are some directors that resonate with just their last name. You know, pretty much, their styles with story, visuals and structure.Spielberg, out of those five, has been able to make films that are both wildly successful and artistically cutting edge at the same time. He doesn’t sacrifice story for visuals but enhances the story through visuals.Christopher Kenworthy focuses on specific scenes in eight of Spielberg’s films over 10 chapters (“Amistad” and “Empire of the Sun” get used twice).As a screenwriter and filmmaker – I enjoyed this book on two different levels. How Spielberg would use the visuals to tell the story he wants to tell (screenwriter level) and how he used camera and camera movement (or lack thereof) to accomplish that feat (filmmaker level).For instance, Kenworthy highlights a scene in “Jaws” where Spielberg shot it to create, as Kenworthy says: “Dynamic Dialogue.” (Not unlike the way that Blake Snyder talked about the “Pope in the Pool” idea of writing creative scenes with interesting visuals.) As a writer, you can learn from the visuals on how to write a scene that has certain dialogue you want to get across, as a filmmaker you can see how simply Spielberg did it (and hopefully recreate it yourself).As good as this book is, there are a couple of suggestions I would make in upcoming editions. Suggestion one would be to put a time-stamp as to when the scene takes place so the reader can just quickly fast forward to that chapter or moment. Another suggestion would be to also include other films not directed by Spielberg that also uses similar techniques – just to give the reader a different perspective.Now I’m looking forward to the “Shoot like Hitchcock, Truffaut, Tarantino, etc.” editions.Call it a book on cinematography or call it a book on film study. Whatever you want to call it, Christopher Kenworthy’s book will help you appreciate and understand what Spielberg brings to the screen.

"Spielberg" is the first one I read, but all 3 are great By Kimberly Adelman I see Amazon is offering a special where you can buy all three of these "Shoot Like" books together. Having read all three, I'd recommend it. "Spielberg" is the first one I read, and the other two are just as solid. I teach Low Budget Filmmaking, and although Spielberg is not a low budget filmmaker, the techniques illustrated in this book should be in every filmmaker's toolkit. So many low budget films would be improved if the filmmakers took the time to learn how to tell a story in a compelling manner. While the author uses obvious Spielberg classics like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "E.T.", he also uses "Armistad" to teach the technique of rapid storytelling. And "Empire of the Sun" (it always amazes me how many people have never seen this film) is used to teach visual storytelling.

Director extraordinaire Spielberg is a master and what better way is there to learn the art of directing than by dissecting and thoroughly understanding how the master executes his craft? The subtitle of this book is: “The Visual Secrets of Action, Wonder, and Emotional Adventure” and that’s what you’ll find in this volume – how to successfully capture action, wonder and emotional adventure within your movies of your own stories. It is not easy to illustrate these three elements on film and you’ll discover how to do so by taking these one-by-one steps through some of film’s greatest classic movies. “Learn by doing” is an age-old way of understanding how artists have illustrated their vision and this book helps you bring out that wonder and emotional tone in scenes that otherwise would be dull and uneventful. I especially enjoyed Chapter 2 Guiding the Eye: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial analysis and learned so much more about a film I thought I knew quite well. It made me watch the tale of the lost alien again and this time my viewing experience was heightened. I highly recommend this book for directors who are looking to find their directing A-game. I can flip through this book over and over again and his work just gets more mysterious. The publication is thorough without being too wordy and analytical- the images speak for them selves. It's a great book for anyone who loves art and especially Bacon.... and for the price you really cant go wrong.

By William Curry 2000 Guitars is a fantastic and gorgeous coffee table book. 2,000 Guitars is a comprehensive visual and historical guide to that most lusted-after of instruments, the guitar. Taking in everything from sixteenth-century acoustics to cutting-edge electrics, it has been compiled by some of the world's finest and most knowledgeable writers and experts on the subject. Trust me folks, you WON'T be disappointed in this book at all if you, too, love guitars. Buy it!!!

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Fantasy Land for guitar enthusiasts By Geoff Dolman This is one of the most entertaining books I have ever found. I wish I were a guitar player, but I am fascinated by the art, craft, and science of guitar building. This book has a number of co-authors along with Tony Bacon, and their credentials are impressive. The book is organized alphabetically by manufacturer/luthier. There are extensive pages for the popular guitars and tons of great pictures. Some might criticize the number of, for example, Fender Teles or Gibson Les Paul guitars from roughly the same year, but there are so many pictures of so many different guitars that this would be a small criticism, and many if not most readers will love the extensive coverage of the big brands. There are fascinating thumbnail sketches of various luthiers, and the information varies from a short paragraph to several pages, appropriate to the popularity of the brand. There is a notation in several of the luthiers' sections relating to a commission by collector Scott Chinery to 22 or so luthiers to produce a blue archtop, and most if not all are included. This is a book I keep by the bedside for late evening reading. Sometimes I intend to read a novel for twenty pages or so before going to sleep, and I see this book, pick it up and browse, and then find that a good hour has passed and its late. This is a great reference with wonderful pictures. If you pick up a copy, you will be hooked too. Enjoy!

GREAT pictures of guitars By Davio This book is chock full of great color pictures of guitars from most makers (both electric and acoustic). The construction of the book itself is high quality and the paper is thick. I find myself grabbing it and looking at the pictures quite often. Highly recommended as both a reference and as a nice "coffee table book" for others.

Just like the first, this is chock full of awesome anecdotes told by the largely unknown personalities of Japanese game development. I really hope the author puts out the third volume.

If one grew-up in the 80s/90s era of gaming, and was a true fan of video games....one MUST BUY this book (as well as volume 1). Nothing like this has EVER been done before -- to this great length of detail. It's a mircale it happened (all of these one-on-one interviews and behind-the-scenes stories)! There is a reason volume one was translated into other languages and why even the Japanese took note of this....its historical and attains viewpoints from the workers themselves...firsthand accounts. Don't miss this, and please support it so Volume 3 can become a reality!

I want to support this book because the fate of the third volume rests on the success of this one.

That other magazine was both silent and talkie material. Silent film segments was in the minority. This quarterly is nothing but silent film material. I love it!!!

This longtime advocate of cinema history, who has lectured at MoMA on Bobby Harron, held a personal acquaintance of Blanche Sweet, and spoken with Lillian Gish numerous times; is excited to add this publication to my collection of pre-29 flick information. Already have obtained issue # 2 and plan to maintain as continuous subscription. Related, but off the topic, is that I (this former Supervisor of Media and Technology at Columbia HS, in NJ's Maplewood) has also had various connections with that school's alumni - Teresa Wright, Roy Scheider, and the Shues (whom he taught). Hence, though not actually from the 1893 time, via prior living in West Orange and working at CHS. I have had about as personal contact with film from Day 1 as a person can get. Hence, reading SILENT FILM QUARTERLY is a real joy and something I firmly recommend for anyone to purchase as it easily gets an A++ grade!!!

Think of this as an encyclopedia of modern drum grooves. I have already used it myself and for my drum set students. This book comes with over 100 backing tracks and audio examples of the grooves being played. The quality of the backing tracks is great and they sound very authentic. I recommend this book for anyone playing drums today!
