Intro to the bleeding edge of JavaScript By Erol Esen Scott Allen is one of the most successful and knowledgeable authors in the latest programming technologies and programming in general. His latest book is right at the cutting edge of JavaScript--so much so that you may find that code snippets are not working in your browser. If you're using Google Chrome browser, make sure you enable the "Experimental JavaScript" by simply typing "chrome:flags" in the address bar. Then in your code, don't forget to add "use strict" line of code to run the latest JavaScript code.

Nice read, needs some reviw By Romeozor It's a nice compilation, although I'm not a huge JS dev, so I can't really evaluate its sum value.There seem to be a lot of formatting issues, through. Usually every other paragraph has 2-3 words squished into one. I noticed it both on my Kindle and on the Windows Kindle app, so I'm assuming it's the material's fault. Probably something that crept up while publishing. Also some additional formatting should be applied when mentioning code parts in the text. It's not always obvious if I'm reading normal text or a variable name.

About the Author

Jon Hoffman

Jon Hoffman has over 20 years of experience in the field of information technology. Over those 20 years, he has worked in the areas of system administration, network administration, network security, application development, and architecture. Currently, he works as a senior software engineer with Syn-Tech Systems. He has developed extensively for the iOS platform since 2008. This includes several apps that he has published in the App Store and written for third parties, besides numerous enterprise applications. In January of 2014, he authored his first book, iOS and OS X Network Programming Cookbook, Packt Publishing. What really drives him is the challenges in the information technology field. There is nothing more exhilarating to him than overcoming a challenge. Some of his other interests are watching baseball (Go Sox) and basketball (Go Celtics). He also really enjoys taekwondo, where he and his eldest daughter, Kailey, earned their black belts together early in 2014. Kim (his wife) earned her black belt in December 2014 and his youngest daughter is currently working toward hers.

Excellent book on Swift 2 By Just Me When I saw the one 2 star review of this book stating it had numerous typos, I read though a number of pages in the “Look Inside” preview and could not find any typos therefore I decided to order it.I have read the first couple of chapters and found the book to be very informative. I am looking forward to getting to the more advance chapters since I am fairly familiar with Swift.I would definitely recommend this book to friends who are trying to learn Swift or need to move from Swift 1.x to version 2.

By mrGott So recently I got my hands on the newly released Mastering Swift 2 (released November 2015) by Jon Hoffman and published by PacktPub.I was excited. I instantly downloaded my copy of e-book and just wanted to take a quick look at it before evening to dive in. Well later I realized that I spent my one hour lunch break reading Mastering Swift 2.By the time of writing this review I’ve covered the whole book and I can say that it’s been the most pleasant and exciting ride I’ve ever had with reading any book.I guess I can compare it with the feelings when I was a kid and watched Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst on the big screen for the first time. For a month or two I was in the Spider-Man world and since then I still love Spider-Man.Now let’s get serious.This book is perfectly written. The author describes and explains everything the way it makes clear even for a novice.My purpose with the book was to once again go through basics of Swift and learn about the new stuff that has been added to version 2.To be honest I expected much less then this book really offered.One of the most important stuff incorporated into Swift 2 are protocol extensions. In the first version of Swift, it was possible to extend the functionality of existing class, struct and enum types. Now with Swift 2, you can extend a protocol as well. I never knew what Protocol-Oriented programing was. While it may only seem like a minor feature at first, protocol extensions are extremely powerful and can transform the way you write code. This books explains it and even tells you how to use protocol extensions and why you would want to use protocol extensions in details.Error handling has been revamped in Swift 2. Instead of NSError objects and double pointers, they moved to a new system that looks similar to exception handling. If I didn’t read this book I would know nothing about error handling in Swift 2 in such details. And probably my code would be more prone to bugs and security problems.One thing worth of noting is that you can read about all of the new features elsewhere, but the way of presenting this information and “teaching” is outstanding by Jon Hoffman.This book covers all of the main features of Swift and gives you great explanation. It also covers topics such as working with XML and JSON, working with NSURLSession. This book has got everything.I could write much more about the contents of the book that makes almost 400 pages and after some time you would think – “I should probably read it, guess its worth of it”. I can tell you straight away that it’s a MUST READ book for everyone, novice and expert.

The examples are easy enough to follow and to type in to try out in the playground. I took a Swift introduction course back in the beginning of December and I wish they had used this book as the teaching book instead of another obsolete Swift 1.2 book.This book is simple enough my 13 years old has started reading it and while I do not anticipate him reading past chapter 12...it is easy enough for him to follow.Again, this book is not to help you learn to program, it is a book for someone who is already fluent in another language and just wants to learn Swift 2.

Erudite and amusing By Max Crowe A charmingly literate and affectionate send-up of pop music by an English pensioner possessing an uncommonly diverse knowledge of the medium. Although its contents skew a bit in the direction of U.K. artists who aren't as well known on American shores, a keen reader can thoroughly enjoy the witticisms even without being familiar with the subject of the lampooning. The absurdist glimpse that Derek and Wilf provide into the relaxed pace of a Bournemouth retiree's life reminds me a bit of the little-known vintage American radio comedy show "Vic and Sade". A must-read for anybody who has ever enjoyed a "Weird" Al Yankovic parody.

Moreover, you can consciously work and communicate in ways that help you earn peoples’ trust more quickly and reap the benefits. Convincing your managers that you “get it” is among the most beneficial things you can do for your career. What most people misunderstand about the value of trust but the savvier people get intuitively is that trust is valuable on both sides of a relationship. Senior managers need employees they can trust further down the chain so that they can focus on business development and other Big Things without sweating the smaller things. A lack of people they trust is a major problem because worrying about too many things at once keeps them from doing their jobs. When you become a go-to person – one who can be counted on to get the job done without too much oversight - you’re not only helping yourself, you’re solving a problem for someone. This is why trusted problem solvers rise faster within an organization than their peers who haven’t earned that trust.

Chip I had no idea joining the workforce would be such an eye opening and soul sucking experience. Christian seems to empathize. But rather than getting caught up in the frustrations of figuring out what to "do" with your life, and how to manage bosses, colleagues, employees, promotions, non-promotions, etc, he relates in a affable and easy to read voice pragmatic solutions and strategies. It seems he has learned a lot in his experience and unlike your dad holding his scotch talking about when he was the low man on the totem pole at the peanut factory, doesn't talk at you but rather with you. I think he "gets" the challenges, and has some really good advice for maneuvering them. I followed the blog and now having all of the advice in one piece of literature makes it that much easier.

Superb and Unintuitive Career Advice By dasch Although this book is targeted at those embarking on a career, it contains unintuitive advice that will benefit even the most grizzled veteran. Bonilla strikes a tone that is smart, funny, and hyper-articulate. My only complaint, and one that I expect will be rectified as this book catches on with the masses, is that it's only available on a Kindle; this is the kind of book that should remain on the bookshelf for the duration of a career, dog-eared, filled with post-it notes, and shared with others. As a manager, this is the book I want to hand out to new hires on their first day.

Quite a good read, indeed!The term “Paleo” as I first heard about it seemed to be a hard topic to tackle. Well, I was wondering if I have to include it in my research scope. I thought it was some kind of diet practiced by some tribe and it will be hard to look for facts about the subject. I am just thankful to have this book as it helped me understand of what a Paleo really is. I discovered through John's book that the Paleo diet generally addresses the inability to gain more weight. There may be a lot of people who would like to lose weight but the truth is there are also many who struggle to overcome life's challenges due to their underweight characteristic. Hence, to those who wants more weight, this book is recommended for you. It provided me a helpful list of foods and sample meal plan as well as some physical activities and supplements that can help gain weight. I learned more about the Paleo diet and the mass gaining techniques that can make us stay clean and healthy while gaining more weight.Thank you for writing this, John! Great book on building mass with Paleo By Angela Johnson This book took a completely different turn on Paleo books that I've read before, and that is why I picked it up. My partner and I are really health conscious, but of course, I'm always trying to lose weight and he's trying to be a muscle-bound weight gainer. In order for us to be able to cook the same foods and minimize the need for multiple meals, I felt it important to pick up a book that shows how the same diet I frequent (Paleo) can be used to help build mass. This book is full of great tips, advice and recipes that my man can use, with the same foods that we buy on our grocery list to keep me lean and fit, and that really makes us both happy!

The exercises in this book are easy and the book is inexpensive.All you need is this book, some weights and a comfortable spot in your home where you can focus. Paleo Workouts contains tons of effective exercises, which not only are easy to learn, but effective too.As you continue reading, you will find tons of exercises and advice on how to improve your health, strength and body. The book even discusses supplements for men and women that can help you improve the way you look and feel.This book may be just what the doctor ordered for anyone who has a quest to lose weight, define his or her body, learn how to eat right and maintain optimum health. It's personable, insightful, and lighthearted. I loved Julie Eason's tip on making eye contact with the audience by imagining that you (the performer) are teaching the audience your movement. This book is great for dedicated beginners/intermediates, as well as worth while for advanced/professionals.

There is a lot of variety in the prompts. Some of them made me giggle, some of them made me really think. I think the ideas are great for teachers to incorporate in their classes. Very unique little book!

Not only will I recommend it to my students for ideas to drive their own practice and create their own dance habits, but it also gives me thoughtful ideas to implement in class while working certain topics and to use in my own personal practice when I'm feeling stuck. I especially appreciate the suggestion to create a dance practice journal and the way the prompts are set up with a lack of rigidity so that each dancer may get out of them what he or she needs at that time. Well done!

It's easy to understand and I love how it gives you little quizzes after each section. That was really helpful. After looking on websites and watching videos and not finding something simple enough for a guide, this book is it. I am so happy I found this because it has helped so much and after one day I am already doing much better writing in Ukrainian. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn Ukrainian.

I love the aroma in my apartment when I walk in the door when I have one of these recipes simmering away. I've tried two of them and tend to like my dinners on the warm side, so I'd recommend spicy hot mustard with the pork and sauerkraut recipe and Worcestershire Sauce with the Ropa Vieja. Well organized and the dinners are as easy to prepare as the author promises. Can't wait to try my next one...

What I was hoping for was some new recipes that my whole family would enjoy and were different than what we already use our pressure cooker for. Unfortunately this was not the recipe book I was looking for. The Curved Space Structure, designed by Peter Jon Pearce, is derived from a comprehensive study of structure in nature, with a special interest in the geometry of atomic assemblies in crystals and patterns found in biomorphic form. This study was pursued with the aim of understanding the unity of formative principles exhibited by natural structure through spatial geometry. Nature universally manifests a principle of least energy where form can be considered a diagram of forces. In a very special way, the Curved Space Structure represents a 16 billion times enlargement of the diamond crystal, enabling children, and adults, to have an immersive experience with its spatial geometry. Not only that, the details of the construction methods of this structural assembly reveal a panoply of natural patterns including curved and minimal surfaces, tessellations, polygonal geometries, and applications of material science and technology. The name Curved Space was adopted as way of characterizing the spatial experience of engaging with these remarkable structures. There is no specific reference to Einstein’s use of this term, although it certainly is implied. In June 1975 a Curved Space Structure was exhibited as part of the International Design Conference at Aspen, Colorado. This was the first public display of the Curved Space and served as a test assembly prior to the first permanent installation at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. There were three distinct structures that were installed at that museum in Brooklyn, New York, in August 1975. Unfortunately about 10 years later the museum was redesigned and the Curved Space installation was removed. One of the most important venues where a Curved Space Structure can still be found is the Hakone Open Air Museum in Japan. This amazing outdoor sculpture museum has had a Curved Space in its collection since 1978, when it was first installed. This structure was replaced and revised first in 1994 and then again in 2011. The Hakone Museum installation is largest single Curved Space Structure ever built. Although considered a work of sculpture, known as Peter Pearce’s Diamond Sculpture, it has always been the intention of the Museum that children be able to access the structure. This structure has been extremely popular with the visitors to the Museum. The origins of the Curved Space system originated with Peter Jon Pearce’s morphological research in 1965-66. This research explored natural structures as a theoretical basis for building system design. The emphasis of the this work involved the study of repeating geometric structures of the type characterized by the internal structure of crystals, as well as patterns of least energy exhibited by biomorphic structures in nature. Combining the study of minimal surfaces and repeating three-dimensional structures led to the Curved Space Structures. This work is comprehensively described in Pearce’s book, Structure in Nature is a Strategy for Design, The MIT Press, 1978, 1990. Although out of print, the book is still available from some sources.

Imagine two people having the same topological experience, but never meeting. Staggering. The whole evolution of the forms is a study in a profound vision and understanding of spatial relationships.

By Steve Diskin This book, and of course the Curved Space structure in all of its incarnations, is strikingly beautiful and wonderful to possess. As a long-time admirer of Pearce's work, I think this project is my favorite: so elegant, really, and yet so seemingly complex, powerful and tantalizing, a stellar example of modular construction that belies the efficiency of its underlying geometry. It's no wonder that it was so celebrated in Japan and works so stunningly in a natural setting! In the end, children are the ultimate judges of Curved Space. It would seem that from their point of view it is a resounding success!!! Thanks for this book, Peter and Aleta: it's gorgeous, with great photos and terrific illustrations that amply underscore the beauty of this wonderful project!

The more we understand the structure that underlies all of nature, specifically at the micro level that also enables the macro, the more sensibly we can design for the human scale. This is a wonderful book that documents the nature design at its highest order of ellegance and efficiency. A relatively brief book, albeit well illustrated, that greatly inspires. Great for all ages.
