Depending on who you ask, the term “Human Resources” can muster a volatile range of responses – from words like “empathize, nurture and counsel,” to “apathetic, antagonize and alienate.” Often times, all these can be used to describe the same HR professional. Why is this the case? Are all HR professionals just that temperamental? Why yes, many are indeed. But wouldn’t you be too if you had to constantly walk the extremely fine line between employee advocate and corporate cheerleader – all the while having responsibility to organize the company picnic and confront the employee observed masturbating at work? As an HR professional, your work is never done…right. Over the course of your career, you will regularly encounter adversaries challenging nearly every decision you make. At the same time, your company’s senior leadership will set unobtainable performance objectives for HR that will lead you to question your career choice on a daily basis. Oh yes…one more thing – you as HR will feel the wrath for any perceived problem within your organization related to the workforce. From low employee engagement scores to high turnover rates, you will undoubtedly bear much of the blame. With a Master's of Human Resources and Industrial Relations (MHRIR) degree and eighteen years of multi-faceted HR experience, author Stephen Michael Campbell originally set out to once-and-for-all resolve the enduring disconnect between the often misguided perception of HR and the true, innate value of this disparaged field. Unfortunately - despite numerous attempts - he reluctantly reached the conclusion that this feat was perhaps impossible for any one person to achieve. Instead, Stephen chose to share a number of his real life experiences through the guise of an imaginary company, Enditall Medical Supplies, Inc., as well as offer up the fictitious professional society – HRPES – to assist those HR folks still in the trenches (believing that their life’s chosen work actually makes a positive impact for the employees they support). While Stephen’s satirical journey into the world of HR will no doubt lead to sporadic laughs, a few tears and a newfound appreciation for the miracle of life, his literary work will most ironically only strengthen the opinion that HR is nothing more than a necessary evil in today’s business landscape. Please join Stephen in delving into the realm of HR from an insider’s perspective... Recent reviews of “Human Resources: The Inconsiderate Truth” include: Critics and cynics alike have widely proclaimed “Human Resources: The Inconsiderate Truth” to be a real game changer. Heralded as a “must read” for HR people and non-HR folks alike, this is one book you simply cannot afford to overlook. Buy yourself a copy today and discover what it truly means to be happy. Want to be someone’s hero? Buy a second copy for a friend and you will both have a better life for it. - The Author As an HR executive with a Fortune 500 company, my job can be extremely stressful at times. I purchased “Human Resources: The Inconsiderate Truth” with the belief that through gaining a deeper insight into my profession, my life at work would become a little easier – perhaps just a bit more bearable. I was wrong. - Ann Nonimus With my hectic work schedule and busy social life, reading just isn’t always a priority for me. If I were ever to pick up a book though, “Human Resources: The Inconsiderate Truth” may very well be that one. - Reed N. Little A colleague of mine recommended I read “Human Resources: The Inconsiderate Truth” to gain a better perspective into what the HR professionals go through at our company. I can now say that I actually feel sorry for what I’ve put these folks through over the years. I’m kidding – I still don’t care for HR people and now I find myself even disliking my colleague for wasting my time with this nonsense. - Rick O’Shea

Everyone who works in an organization of any size will have fun recognizing their co-workers, bosses, and maybe even themselves. The bulk of the book is a humorous, satirical look at human resource issues. It then takes a more serisous look at some of those issues, but still in a humorous manner. Not being an HR person, I learned that they are given tasks from all sides of a company. It’s often up to them to negotiate what’s best for all in the long term; and sometimes it’s an impossible task.Anyone who interacts with HR can gain some insight regarding their role in the workplace.

Step up to the barre and strengthen your core with 100 at-home barre exercises!

Infused with elements of ballet, barre classes were introduced by Lotte Berk in the 1970s as a new way to combine dance with traditional exercise. Just about any barre class will involve a lot of reps of small, pulsing movements (lifting and lowering limbs a mere inch or two) at the barre, with a heavy focus on the legs, glutes, and core and emphasis on form and alignment.

Barre Fitness provides 100 at-home barre exercises from the fundamentals to more complex moves with a focus on building strength and improving technique--no barre required! Trained at the ground floor of the prestigious Lotte Berk Method NYC (where barre fitness originated), Fred Devito and Elisabeth Halfpapp bring first-generation teaching and training experience and the acclaim of the Core Fusion(R) brand to this guide to at-home exercise, geared toward your fitness goals.

This book breaks down the set ups, progressions, and sequences for all of the classic barre exercises to empower you to perform them at home with clear photographs and easy-to-follow descriptions and program routines. Each exercise explains the benefits and how they can be combined for different results. Learn how to integrate these barre exercises into your daily workout routine, while mindfully incorporating healthy eating and stress reduction habits, for living a healthier lifestyle regardless of your age or fitness level.

Whether you want to tone and shape your muscles (without gaining muscle mass), build your core strength, lose weight, increase flexibility, combat aging, rehab from injury, or supplement your current fitness routine (or any combination of these), Barre Fitness offers the solutions you're looking for.

Review

"Thank you so much Fred DeVito, Elisabeth Halfpapp and Exhale Spa for Barre Fitness. Love the empowering core thesis of your philosophy that 'if it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you'--barre none, the smartest words to live by." - Mariska Hargitay, star of Law & Order

"Fred and Lis are not only two of the nicest people on the planet but also some of the most creative. I admire their commitment to health and fitness and it is something everyone should strive for. Their classes have kept me in great shape for many years. This is an amazing read for any barre lover! I could not be happier for their success." - Tara Lipinski, Olympic gold medalist in figure skating

"I gladly recommend Core Fusion to my patients, family, and friends, as it embraces all the important aspects of cardiovascular fitness: muscle conditioning, aerobics, weight bearing to improve bone density, balance exercises, and stretching to enhance flexibility. Personally, when I finish a workout, I feel energetic yet calm, and I have no doubt that it has improved my posture. I also love that it is safe for all ages as there is no jarring of the joints." - Erica Jones, M.D., Director of HeartHealth, Cardiovascular Prevention Program of the Dalio Institute of Cardiovascular imaging at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center

"I believe that knowledge is power and patient education is a crucial part of my protocols and treatment plans. Core Fusion founders Fred and Lis have gifted us with a book on the fundamentals of their method. I recommend that anyone who participates in Core Fusion or barre class in general, veteran or newbie, educate and familiarize him or herself with the technique to achieve healthy, safe, noticeable results. This book is a must-read!"- Christine Zic, M.S.P.T., physical therapist

"I'e been doing Fred and Elisabeth's exercises for thirty years. No excuses -- you just need your body and a wall (you don't even need a barre) -- so you can do them anywhere. The variations keep you from getting bored and keep your body guessing, so you don't get injured." - Vicki B. Goldhill, M.D.

This is a MUST-HAVE By Leonora D'Angelo-Blitz As a student of this method for over 20 years, I am so excited to finally be able to share this book with friends. Fred & Lis are master teachers and present all the exercises we love in a clear and concise manner. If you have never taken a barre class or are a seasoned devotee like myself, this book is a must. I especially like the "watch out for" section as form is so key to the work. If you are looking to start 2016 (or sooner) with challenging exercises that can be done anywhere and are results-oriented, then this book will not disappoint!!

The result? 120 pound weight loss, less injuries than I experienced in yoga or any other workout, and lengthening parts of my body I didn't think could be changed. My calf is an inch tighter than it was when I was when I was 10 pounds lighter and in my twenties. Listen to any advice this book offers.

From Stephen R. Covey—the late, legendary author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People—a new set of rules for achieving a happy and fulfilling life of primary greatness. Many of us are hurting. We have chronic problems, dissatisfactions, and disappointments. Although we generally make it through the day, a lot of us feel overwhelmed by burdens we carry. We try to “lift the load of life” each day and sometimes it’s just too much. The idea of living a “great life” seems a distant dream. Too often, however, we have the wrong idea of what a great life is. We think if only we had enough money, enough leisure, enough good looks or popularity, everything would be great. If that’s what makes for a great life, no wonder so many of us feel so weighed down by the demands of everyday living. Stephen R. Covey believed there were only two ways to live: a life of primary greatness or a life of secondary greatness. Through his classic books and seminars, he taught that the intrinsic rewards of primary greatness—integrity, responsibility, and meaningful contribution—far outweighed the superficial rewards of secondary greatness—money, popularity, and the self-absorbed, pleasure-ridden life that some people consider “success.” Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s teachings are beloved and have inspired countless readers and leaders. Primary Greatness once again delivers classic Covey wisdom in a compact and digestible form. In this posthumous work, Covey lays out clearly the 12 levers of success that will lead to a life of primary greatness: Integrity, Contribution, Priority, Sacrifice, Service, Responsibility, Loyalty, Reciprocity, Diversity, Learning, Teaching, and Renewal. For the first time, Covey defines each of these twelve qualities and how they provide the leverage to make your daily life truly “great.”

Primary Greatness: The 12 Levers of Success, by Stephen R. Covey

Review "When life weighs us down with problems and disappointments, we sometimes feel that we are not successful and it is difficult to move forward, let alone make progress toward reaching our goals. In this book, Stephen Covey provides us with 12 principles to live by that can help us have the character, courage and confidence to push past life’s difficulties to create our very best life.”—Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, 2006“Primary Greatness teaches that what some may consider greatness – money, power, social prominence – is far less important than a life of honesty, love, and contribution. It is in fact, personal integrity that is the foundation for all success. In this powerful set of essays, Stephen Covey shows that you cannot deliver value without values.”—Indra Nooyi, CEO, PepsiCoDr. Covey’s teachings have been instrumental in shaping both my personal and professional life. The 12 levers outlined in Primary Greatness outline a clear path for anyone to achieve success. This is a wonderful book filled with incredible nuggets and wisdom.”—Kevin Turner, COO, Microsoft "In these remarkable early essays by Stephen Covey, you'll find the core principles of genuine success — and the seeds of the famous seven habits. With his trademark clarity, Covey emphasizes the importance of integrity and intrinsic rewards and makes a powerful case for life our live more from imagination than memory. PRIMARY GREATNESS is an ideal book for anyone looking for guidance in how to live a truly successful, worthwhile life of service.”—Daniel H. Pink, New York Times bestselling author of DRIVE, TO SELL IS HUMAN, and A WHOLE NEW MIND"The essays in this book are still so timely, even though Covey wrote them many years ago. In this book, he continues to remind us that what we do every day in our personal and professional relationships – how we treat others – reflects our loyalty and commitment to building lives of character. Thank you, Stephen, for providing us with these pearls of wisdom."—Kimo Kippen, Chief Learning Officer, Hilton Worldwide University

CHAPTER 1

THE SECRET LIFE

If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden. —FRANCES HODGSON BURNETT We all live three lives: public, private, and secret. The secret life is where your heart is, where your real motives are—the ultimate desires of your life. It is also the source of primary greatness. If you have the courage to explore your secret life, you can honestly question your deepest motivations. Are you prepared to rescript those motivations—to realign your life to the core principles of true success? The secret life is the key to primary greatness. In New York City, I attended the Broadway play The Secret Garden. The play was particularly poignant for me, because my mother had just died. The Tony Award–winning musical is the story of a young girl whose mother and father die of cholera in India as the play begins. She is sent to live with her uncle in a large British manor. The old house is filled with romantic spirits. As the restless girl explores the grounds of the estate, she discovers the entrance to the magical secret garden, a place where anything is possible. When she first enters the garden, she finds that it appears to be dead, much like her cousin, a bedridden boy, and her uncle, still haunted by memories of his lovely wife who died giving birth to the boy. In harmony with natural laws and principles, the girl faithfully plants seeds and brings new life to the garden. As the roots are warmed and the garden cultivated, she brings about a dramatic transformation of her entire family culture within one season. In my many years of teaching and training, I have seen several such transformations brought about by proactive people who live by principles of greatness in their secret, private, and public lives. When I returned home the next day to speak at my mother’s funeral, I referred to The Secret Garden, because for me and many others, my mother’s home was a secret garden where we could escape and be nurtured by positive affirmation. In her eyes, all about us was good, and all that was good was possible. Our Three Lives In our public life, we are seen and heard by colleagues, associates, and others within our circle. In our private life, we interact more intimately with spouses, family members, and close friends. The secret life is part of the other two. The secret life is the mainspring that motivates the other two lives. Many people never visit the secret life. Their public and private lives are essentially scripted by whom and what precedes and surrounds them or by the pressures of the environment. Thus, they never exercise that unique endowment of self-awareness—the key to the secret life—where you can stand apart from yourself and observe yourself. Courage is required to explore your secret life because you must first withdraw from the social mirror—the reflection of ourselves that society feeds back to us but may have little to do with our inner selves. We get used to the view of ourselves in the social mirror. And we may opt to avoid self-examination and idle away our time in a vacuum of reverie and rationalization. In that frame of mind, we have little sense of identity, safety, or security. Examine Your Motives The most critical junctures in my life take place when I visit my secret life and ask, “What do I think? What do I believe is right? What should my motives be?” These are times when I deeply visit my secret life and choose my motives. “Wait a minute,” I say to myself. “It’s my life. I can choose how to use my time and energy. I can choose whether to get up in the morning and exercise. I can choose to get angry or not. I can choose whether I want to make reconciliation with this person or not. I can choose my own motives.” One of the exciting fruits of the secret life is the ability to consciously choose your own motives. Until you choose your own motives, you really can’t choose to live your own life. Everything flows out of motives and motivation—they are the root of our deepest desires. The question is, which motives will we put first in our lives? When I face a frustrating or perplexing situation, I enter into my secret life. That’s where I face myself and ask, “Will I live by correct principles, or will I surrender to the demands of secondary greatness?” As I learn to be proactive in exploring the secret life, I tap into self-awareness, imagination, conscience, and into the exercise of free will to choose my motives. For example, when thinking about your career, you might ask, “Now, what is my real motive?” N. Eldon Tanner, former Speaker of the Alberta Legislative Assembly and former Cabinet member, once said, “Whenever I had a big career decision, I had to visit my heart and ask, ‘Am I totally prepared to put first things first—and in this position, will I keep my priorities straight?’ ” He said, “I’d have to struggle with that question until it was settled.” Once he had made that decision, he would look at the assignment and ask, “If it would build the causes most dear to me, I will go and serve there.” He became well respected throughout his country. I met with this great man once when I was serving on a search committee for a new university president. When I entered his office, he left his desk and came around, sat next to me, and said, “What do you want me to understand?” He listened to me with much intensity and sincerity, then said, “I want you to know how much I respect you.” It deeply impressed me. People who regularly explore their secret life and examine their motives are better able to see into the heart of others, practice empathy, empower them, and affirm their worth and identity. A healthy secret life will benefit your private and public lives in many ways. For example, when I’m preparing to give a speech, I read aloud a favorite discourse that is inspiring to me because it helps me clarify my motive. I lose all desire to impress. My only desire is to serve. And when I go to a public setting with that motive, I have great confidence and inner peace. I feel more love for the people and feel much more authentic myself. Executives I have consulted with tell me, “This is the first time in many, many years that I’ve done any soul searching. I’ve seen myself as if for the first time, and I’ve resolved that my life is going to be different. I’m going to try to be true to what I really believe.” Over the years, many people have written me to say, “Your principles have made the difference. I’d never really thought about some of them before, but I resonate with them.” That’s because these principles reside in their secret lives. And yet, most of us spend our busy days privately doing our thing, never pausing long enough to enter the secret life, the secret garden, where we can create masterpieces, discover great truths, and enhance every aspect of our public and private lives. A healthy secret life is the key to primary greatness. Self-Affirmation A key to having a healthy secret life is self-affirmation. Among the most important bits of communication are messages of affirmation you give yourself and others. A good self-affirmation has five characteristics: • It’s personal, meaning it is written in the first person. • It’s positive rather than negative, meaning that it affirms what is good and right. • It’s present tense, meaning you are doing it now or have the potential for doing it. • It’s visual, meaning you can see it clearly in your mind’s eye. • It’s emotional, meaning you have strong feelings attached to it. The following two examples of affirmation will serve to illustrate these five principles. OVERREACTION. Suppose a parent who overreacts to spilled milk decides he has the potential for improvement. Thus, he resolves to respond with wisdom, love, firmness, fairness, patience, and self-control in stressful situations. He then writes his resolve in the form of an affirmation: “How deeply satisfying (emotional) it is to me (personal) to respond (present tense) under conditions of fatigue, stress, pressure, or disappointment (visual conditions) with self-control, wisdom, firmness, patience, and love (positive).” PROCRASTINATION. Suppose an individual desires to improve in the area of procrastination. Because she compulsively puts things off and manages by crisis, she selects as her desired behavior to be on top of things, to be current and value-driven. Her affirmation becomes: “How satisfying and exhilarating it is to be in charge of myself, guiding my own destiny, by taking time to plan, to work my plan, and to delegate to others.” Power of Self-Affirmation Norman Cousins, author of Anatomy of an Illness and Human Options, showed the world how the power of affirmation enables us to release within us our frequently untapped emotional strengths. Within a week of returning home from a trip abroad, Cousins found himself almost unable to move his neck, arms, hands, fingers, and legs. Soon hospitalized, he was diagnosed as suffering from a serious disease of the connective tissues. His doctor told him, “Your chance for full recovery is one in five hundred.” At first, Cousins allowed his doctor and the hospital to do their thing. Medication was administered—often in excess. Tests were performed—both routinely and redundantly. All these medical procedures, plus his doctor’s unfavorable diagnosis, gave Cousins a great deal to think about. “It seemed clear to me,” he later wrote, “that if I were to be that one in five hundred, I had better be something more than a passive observer.” Familiar with research detailing the negative effects of negative emotions on body chemistry, he asked: “Wouldn’t positive emotions produce positive effects? Is it possible that love, hope, faith, laughter, confidence, and the will to live have therapeutic value?” Reasoning that if the negative is true, then the positive must also be true, Cousins soon formulated a plan for the pursuit of affirmative emotions. His plan drew upon medical resources, supportive professionals, laughter, and the love of his family. He then walked out of the hospital, secured a room in a hotel, hired his own nurse, and watched Marx Brothers movies and television comedies. Ten minutes of a deep belly laugh, he found, provided him with two or three hours of pain-free sleep—the first in months. He discovered that the mind is a walking apothecary, a carry-it-with-you drugstore. Week by week, Norman Cousins gained strength. Year by year, his mobility improved. And in spite of speculation by some that his efforts had nothing to do with his recovery, that he would have recovered had he done nothing or that he was simply the beneficiary of an experiment in self-administered placebos, Cousins believed that his experience was, and is, proof of the power of the will to live and the power of imagination to release and unleash enormous powers innate in us. Three Helpful Practices I have found the following three practices to be very helpful in the process of self-affirmation. 1. USE RELAXATION TECHNIQUES TO PLANT AFFIRMATIONS. Affirmations can’t achieve effective results in the rush of everyday living. The mind and the body must slow down. By learning to relax, we can learn to slow down. When we are in a deeply relaxed state, our brain waves become very slow; they are then highly suggestible. Through visual and emotional affirmations, we can plant ideas and images deep within us. The challenge, of course, is to learn to relax. There are many techniques for relaxing. One of the best is to consciously tense your muscle groups and then relax them. The theory behind this technique is that if you can tense a muscle, then logically you should be able to relax it. Another technique is to mentally relax so that you see yourself as limp as a rag doll. Or you visualize all of your muscles becoming limp and long. You see yourself in your mind’s eye becoming heavy from your feet up through your legs, your torso, and your arms, to your neck, your back, and your face. During the twilight periods—upon arising and just before retiring—the brain waves are much slower. This becomes a prime programming opportunity, because the subconscious mind is more receptive than at any other time of day. I have used the principle of relaxation as it applies to affirmations with my own children and have seen dramatic results. 2. USE REPETITION TO ENSURE SUCCESS. If you desire to use your affirmation to initiate change or to prepare yourself for some future event, you must experience it over and over again. Say it, see it, feel it. Make it a part of you. Remember, you are programming yourself. You are eclipsing and subordinating the earlier scripts written into your makeup. Instead of living the scripts given by your parents, your friends, society, the environment, or genetics, you’re affirming; you’re living the new scripts you’ve chosen for yourself. By repeating affirmations, you can grow and change. 3. USE IMAGINATION AND VISUALIZATION TO SEE THE CHANGE. In any affirmation, the more details you can see in your mind’s eye, and the more clear and vivid the details—the color of your office drapes, the texture of the floor on your bare feet as you serve breakfast, the opened planning book on your desk, your daughter’s report card—the less you will view your affirmation as a spectator and the more you will experience it as a participant. The more senses you can employ in visualizing a change, the greater chance of actually rescripting your life. Most of us neglect this creative power. We live too much out of our memories, too little out of our imagination—too much on what is or has been, not enough on what can be. That’s like trying to drive forward by looking in the rearview mirror. In manned space programs, part of the astronauts’ training includes many hours in spaceflight simulators, training or programming their minds and bodies to accomplish tasks in situations no human has experienced. When the astronauts were ultimately faced with these new challenges in space, they performed unbelievably well because of their simulated experiences. Imagination and creativity had provided the mental images for events that would take place in the future. Their minds, unencumbered by conventional censors, were free to become flexible, adaptive, uninhibited—truly creative and innovative. Use the power of self-affirmation daily, in your secret garden, to cultivate your own meaningful life. Application & Suggestions • Consider keeping a personal journal in order to track your progress toward primary greatness. Many of the application suggestions in this book encourage you to record thoughts and create written plans. • Write in your personal journal the answers to these questions: • In what ways have you been chasing secondary greatness at the expense of primary greatness? • Ask yourself: “What do I believe is right? What are my deepest moral convictions? What should I do with my life?” Write down what you discover about yourself. • One of the exciting fruits of the “secret garden” is the ability to consciously choose your own motives. What motives do you need to change? Record your best motives and what you can do to actualize them. • Consider the steps to create a good self-affirmation statement. Write the script you usually tell yourself. Now rewrite that script. What can you affirm about yourself? What’s good or even great about you and about the contribution you can make?

Here are decades of experience-driven wisdom from Stephen Covey’s mostly unpublished reflections By Robert Morris Stephen Covey is without doubt one of the most prolific business thinkers and writers in recent decades. As Sean Covey explains in the Foreword to this volume, the material in Primary Greatness was selected by his father’s colleagues from mostly unpublished essays. He died in 2012 after having produced thirteen books and hundreds of articles. He is probably best known for The 7 Habits of Highly effective People. I think the title of Primary Greatness could also have been “The Essential Covey” and the material can serve as an excellent introduction to his seminal thinking about major business subjects, especially leadership and organizational development. As Sean Covey explains, “This book is an excellent collection of several of my father’ best essays that have never appeared in book form and aren’t well known. But they are vintage Stephen Covey and contain some of his best thinking.” I agree. With regard to this book’s title, Covey continued to emphasize to his son that there are two ways to live: “Primary greatness is who you really are – your character, integrity, your deepest motives and desires. Secondary greatness is popularity, title, position, fame, fortune, and honors. He taught me not to worry about secondary greatness and focus on primary greatness.”These are among the several dozen passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of coverage in Primary Greatness:o Examining motives and the inner life ((Pages 5-7)o Achieving success with maturity as a sign of greatness (13-22)o Relationships (15-17 and 82-83)o Discipline and habits (20-22)o Magnetic forces and culture (35-37)o Accountability mindset (41-43 and 91-93)o Gandhi and proper behavior (43-44)o Business ethics (53-54 and 60-62)o Gossiping (56-57 and 120-123)o Identifying gifts and talents (76-78)o Priorities and Primary Greatness (74-87)o Creating an essence of leadership (81-87)o Sacrifice and and Primary Greatness (88-96)o Responsibility and Primary Greatness (106-114)o Steadfast loyalty (116-123)o Security and diversity (136-139)o Knowledge and continuous learning (145-146 and 150154)o Mental health/Social skills/Wellness (150-154)o Teaching to learn and culture (158-160)o Wisdom (161-169)o Change (171-172 and 175-177)This is an anthology of eighteen essays, each about nine pages in length. To varying degree, they reveal the nature and extent of the potential impact of twelve “levers of success” – Integrity, Contribution, Priority, Sacrifice, Service, Responsibility, Loyalty, Reciprocity, Diversity, Learning, Renewal, and Teaching -- when attempting to achieve personal growth and professional development. A separate chapter is devoted to each of the eight. As I read and then re-read the material in this book, I felt as if Stephen Covey had written it for me. His insights and counsel helped me to reflect on my life thus far, to examine (in fact, re-examine) my current circumstances, and then begin to formulate a path to follow during whatever time remains for me. My guess (only a guess) is that many others who read this book will feel the same way.One final point: Primary greatness is not an ultimate destination; rather, it is a never-ending process, a journey during which there will be an abundance of perils as well as opportunities. How to respond? Presumably Stephen Covey agrees with Helen Keller: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”

Covey into a new book that highlights the key differences of Primary Greatness (Success with depth and meaning through integrity, character and contributions, etc.) versus Secondary Greatness (Success through superficial types of fames, PR images and material gains or financial achievements, etc.), while also laying out the 12 Levers for achieving Primary Greatness as a much higher form of success that leaves legacy and positive impact for the good of others. I must congratulate the Covey's teams in launching such a great book since the departure of Dr. Covey. This book is relatively easy to read and understand, helping readers to do deep soul searching on one's existence and meaning. It is not about 7 Habits or the 8th Habit, making it less theoretical, yet still philosophical, with less jargons, yet more depth and less self-help in tonality. This book truly makes me think and reflect, upon a turbulent world that we live in nowadays. We are enslaved by the internet, social media, gadgets, and smartphones. We are more hooked into both quick-fixes and superficialities, while getting less and less in touch with our true inner voices. I cannot stop reading this book, once I got both the Kindle and Audible versions of it. Frankly speaking, for the past 4 to 5 years, I am mostly disappointed with the so-called new books published by Franklin Covey, since they are getting more and more commercialized, always repeating the same old stuff, especially spinning off from the "7 Habits brand franchise". But this time, when I read this new book, I found it more like the books of Dr.Covey in his earlier years (probably condensed from many of his older articles!), by which are more deep and in touch with our hearts, rather than just theoretically appealing to our heads. Even just by reading Sean Covey's preface, I was so touched by it, and I kept reading, fully inspired by the importance of pursuing Primary Greatness in one's life for deeper meaning, achievements and happiness. Hope you will be inspired by it too!

Covey, primary greatness is the kind of success that comes from contribution. By contrast, the trappings of success—position, popularity, public image—are secondary greatness. When you see the actions and behaviors of celebrities, famous athletes, CEOs, movie actors, or whatever, you’re seeing secondary greatness.Primary greatness is on the inside. It’s about character. Secondary greatness is on the outside. As Dr. Covey taught, ‘Many people with secondary greatness—that is, social recognition for their talents—lack primary greatness or goodness in their character. Sooner or later, you’ll see this in every long-term relationship they have, whether it is with a business associate, a spouse, a friend, or a teenage child going through an identity crisis. It is character that communicates most eloquently. As Emerson once put it, ‘What you are shouts so loudly in my ears that I cannot hear what you say.’”~ Stephen R. Covey’s colleagues from the Preface to Primary GreatnessStephen Covey is one of my favorite teachers. In fact, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People was *literally* the first book I ever read that introduced me to the idea that we could actually improve our lives and make a difference in the world. On the first pages of my book, I share this quote from 7 Habits as it so powerfully captures the essence of my work:“I believe that a life of integrity is the most fundamental source of personal worth. I do not agree with the popular success literature that says that self-esteem is primarily a matter of mind set, of attitude—that you can psych yourself into peace of mind. Peace of mind comes when your life is in harmony with true principles and values and in no other way.”(Which came right after this Nietzsche quote, btw: “This is my way; where is yours?— Thus I answered those who asked me ‘the way.’ For the way—that does not exist.” :)Stephen Covey passed away in 2012. This book was published posthumously and features a collection of wisdom focusing on the fact that private victory precedes public victory.Primary greatness. It’s all about what’s on the INSIDE.I'm excited to share some of my favorite Big Ideas:1. The 12 Levers of Success - Here they are.2. Esse Quam Videri - "To be rather than to seem."3. Virtues: Meet Your Parents - Humility + Courage.4. Say "YES!!" - If you want to be able to say "No."5. High-Tech Power Saw - = Next purchase. That’s how we want to live—with primary greatness ever in mind.More goodness— including PhilosophersNotes on 300+ books in our *OPTIMIZE* membership program. It's scary but I think my mind works in a similar way to Limmy's own twisted mind - he manages to write about those weird things that go on in your head but you dont really tell anyone about them because you can't put them into words, but somehow Limmy does it, and does it really well. If you like the TV show you will love this book. If you don't like the TV show because you can't understand the accents then you'll love this book! Please keep writing Limmy!! :)

About the Author Born and raised in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, I grew up with a deep-seated love for all things family, sports, planning, parties, and writing. Getting married has been the best decision I’ve made in my life. The honest truth is that hanging out with your best friend day in and day out is a marvelously adventurous and joyous way to live life. I wouldn’t have it any other way. My husband, Ryan, and I own a Chicago-based wedding planning business, Toopes Events. And, we thoroughly enjoy each journey we’re lucky enough to embark on with our clients as we help them plan a wedding celebration that is uniquely them. I must say that I owe Ryan (he’ll probably say I owe him a puppy) for his unwavering love and patience as I worked through getting my advice on paper in the hopes to make life just a little bit easier for future brides and grooms. Whether he gets that puppy or not, I’m truly grateful to have him as my rock.

A Bold Life By Lutine HOLD FAST, the new autobiography from actor, voice artist and action director Mark Ryan, delivers what it promises: a very personal insight into the life and many roads this multi-talented man has taken in his decades-spanning career. He has combined his acting career with his work for the British Army's Intelligence Corps, so the story told intertwines anecdotes from London's West End and Hollywood with exciting stories from darker worlds. Who knew the entertainment industry has so many close points of contact with the military world and its inherently silent branch of espionage? The book opens with a great introduction from actor Ray Winstone, which is in itself (almost) worth reading the book for. Anyone who has had the pleasure to sit down with Mr Ryan and listen to his life stories will find this book greatly entertaining. It touches on very personal subjects, on the people he shared parts of his lifepath with, his road to London's West End and Evita, the relationships with his fellow actors (among them Robin of Sherwood's Michael Praed, with whom he experienced a somewhat strained relationship during a later project in which they both participated), on his Robin of Sherwood days and on his subsequent move to the US. Ryan talks about the filming of First Knight and Bob Anderson the exceptional swordmaster, as well as of King Arthur and the great promise actress Keira Knightley already showed during shooting that movie. Talking about close contact points, Ryan's work in Ireland for King Arthur brought him unexpectedly close to Republican sympathisers (not the best place to be for a British soldier!).Those who love background stories on famous actors won't be disappointed. Yet, all chapters in the book have a slight undertone of warning, maybe to remind the reader that underneath of all that glitter of Hollywood, there is a world that is the perfect negative image of the business' glamour. Ryan's work as a Licensed Private Investigator and his work in the recovery business (protecting recovering drug addicts from relapsing) provide for some very harrowing tales, recounting acts of unspeakable evil. The book offers insight in those interconnected worlds, and it provides a thorough education too! I know very little of modern weaponry, yet after reading Hold Fast I do know exactly which gun to use in a particular life-threatening situation!Of course, Ryan also elaborates on his time in South Africa filming Black Sails, in which he played Mr Gates, for on a variation on a saying by Mark Twain, he lived and was good and God permitted him to be a pirate. Working on Black Sails was an amazing experience for him, even after a lifetime in the business (one does wonder, how much action and endeavour can a person pack into one lifetime?). The book's title Hold Fast derives from the pirate world, as pirates would tattoo the letters on their fingers, reminding them to hold fast to ropes and ship, or to inevitably drown.Possibly the best part of the book, and the Transformer fans will absolutely love this, is Ryan's account of his collaboration with famous director Michael Bay on the four films of the franchise. It turns out that voicing Bumblebee, Jetfire and Lockdown involves a lot of running! To conclude this review, I have to say I very much enjoyed the little quotes the book offers on how Ryan has approached his own rollercoaster type of a life, always emphasising boldness in making one's choices as well as trusting the Universe in opening paths for us when others seem irreversibly overgrown. I propose there should be a Hold Fast part 2, in which we see even more of Ryan's remarkable visions on life. But for now, let's focus on the Hold Fast before us, a perfect holiday read.

Money 4 Music: How to make 5 figures per song you write., by Sean Gordon

About the Author Sean Gordon has been working in the music industry professionally for over 15 years and has been composing music for over 20. He has composed and produced music for NBC, Discovery, Nintendo, X-Box, Shell, Bank of New York, Franklin Templeton Investments, Kikkoman, Redd’s Apple Ale, Spy Gear, Bay Club, Philips, Underworld, Wasteland, Urgency, Red Robin… and many more. His earlier years were spent in touring rock band “Burning Tree Project” as the lead guitar player. After four albums and even appearing on MTV, he quit the band to pursue his own music. He then got his big break in licensing via a phone call from an old friend who was working behind the scenes in the music business. As a hobby Sean would record and posts videos on his YouTube channel as "Shonsta". As a result of posting his first video “Simpsons Unplugged” way back when YouTube first started, he was invited to several Simpsons scoring sessions where composer Alf Claussen (Composer for The Simpsons) helped transform him into the composer he is today. He then opened his own recording studio (Digital Dungeon) and began producing bands and artists in North Hollywood, CA. This would lead to film score and the very secretive world of custom commercial cues. In 2011, Sean moved to San Francisco, CA and opened a post audio house with a business partner for several years. He has since been solely composing music for commercials and finally retired from the composing business to pursue his other life passions.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love it! By Derek W. Lantzsch Well Sean has done it in a big way. This is an easy to follow and obviously a hands on approach to making it with your music. As a musician and a writer I am appreciative to someone who's made it clear for me something that is obscured and complex. I can see this benefiting both the new writer/composer and professionals alike. I'm actually printing out, to post on my wall - to keep me motivated, some of the pages.

In Texas in the mid sixties some local boys, rock and rollers from rural Kerrville banded together and were joined by some hip Austin music makers to pioneer one of the first psychedelic bands of the day. Thirteenth Floor Elevators led the way in the Haight-Ashbury scene like pied pipers heralding the upcoming summer of love. Stacy Sutherland was one of those legendary boys and this is his story.

Stacy Sutherland: Down the Rabbit Hole, by Vicki Welch Ayo

Review Psych Trail Mix Issue #10 Brent Marley Review of Stacy Sutherland:Down the Rabbit HoleStacy Sutherland was the amazing, unique, psychedelic guitarist from the legendary 13th Floor Elevators.  Vicki Welch Ayo has put together an intimate look into Stacy's life through various correspondences from people related to Stacy or involved in his life including; his mother Sybil Sutherland, various acquaintances, and "Bunni," Stacy's wife at the time who fatally shot and killed him at their home back in August of 1978.  Some people had complained that this wasn't a "book" on Stacy's life and just correspondences through letters, but I really like it.  It's a unique, sort of candid, intimate way to tell the story of Stacy.  And the story IS told; Stacy's mother tells of his early life, friends and others tell of his musical legacy, and letters from Bunni give a close look into their life - the good and the bad.  I was fascinated about their journeys, foraging to find psychedelic mushrooms - a theory was even put forth how a bad bout of drought made Stacy hit alcohol and harder drugs due to the absence of the shrooms. Dig it!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A promise kept By Roy Waidler Thirteenth Floor Elevators' Stacy Sutherland Down the Rabbit HoleVicki Welch Ayo 2015Not everyone knows that there were two American wars in the 1960s. Most everyone knows about Vietnam and the little sideshows in Laos that preceded 'Nam; far fewer are aware that a second war was waged on American soil. For our brave troops in Vietnam, the orders they were under were to protect the people there from Communism. Men and women enlisted, or went under General Hershey's aegis, viz. the draft. The second war was for the soul of America. It was waged against the Americans by their own government, which had been bought and sold some time before the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The members of the “army” which fought here at home could hardly think of themselves as soldiers. Oh no. Yet it was an army, the likes of which has been witnessed but once in Western history. That army was led by a nineteen-year-old commandant who had no battlefield experience; they fought under a banner which proclaimed, Liberty! Equality! Fraternity! some scant few centuries before the philosophes declared the same. This leader wrote letters which have come down to our day; from them may be gleaned precious information about that war. When historical eye-witness is wanting, historiographers put hope in what ever correspondence may have happened between historical persons. By the way, this brave soul fielding this army had a name: Iehannete d'Domremy d'Arcy; we know her as Joan of Arc.In 1960 were were not a nation of polarized souls. Oh, yeah, sure, we had our differences with our government and – not surprisingly – with each other. But we all of us were Americans. As an example, I had a brief conversation with and FBI agent in 1968; he asked why I wasn't supporting a local Marxist group, despite my well-known ability to quote ole Karl line and verse; my reply was, because I am an American. He nodded in understanding. Some of us went to Vietnam to fight; others of us fought here, again, for the soul of our nation. Too many of us died in both conflicts, too many of us were maimed both physically and psychologically. Unlike la Pucelle's troop, we had no Joan; you cannot count CIA plant Timothy Leary, whom Dr. Hunter S. Thompson fingered before that false piper had laid down his tune. But fight we did. We used music and art and above all, a pure love freely given as our weaponry. Every battle was lost. Today I can say with confidence than we won that war. America has been saved. For those of us who survived either conflict, I say unto you: soldier, go home. For those who lie under the sweet earth, I say: you are not forgotten and your sacrifice was not in vain. One such person is the subject of Vicki Welch Ayo's newest book. His name, Stacy Sutherland, may not be known to everyone but he is known to many, especially to those of us who are still alive.I'm a pre-Leary tripper. My way was the Vedanta-laced way of Aldous Huxley via The Doors of Perception. That stuffy-looking fellow from Harvard, a student of Harry Stack Sullivan, was in the news in 1962 and 1963, talking about a chemical – he didn't at all use the word drug in his presentations – which, he held, had great promise as a psychiatric adjunct for those with schizophrenia. Within two years he traded his Harvard PhD for someone named Tim. Someone sold him a bag of magical beans for the family cow. Here in New Jersey we are and were as culturally different from the good folks in Texas as can be – in some superficial aspects. But deep down? We're all good ole boys, in the sense that that phrase conjured before the PC people got their hands on it and twisted into some miserable form of misogyny. We were and are all sisters and brothers. Americans. One night at 2:00 AM I was driving home and I was listening to my favorite overnight DJ, Alex Bennett. He was going to launch with another episode of Great Bands that the Music Industry Destroyed. No, that's not what he called such broadcasts, but you can bet yer sweet self that that's what these shows were about. He was going on on this night about a band from Texas; I didn't catch the name; but he played one of their songs: Slip Inside this House. I had to pull over. Whoever these people were, they were rhapsodizing about what I little I had come to know about spiritual things. The next day, as I lived about six miles from Manhattan, my girl and I went to our favorite used record shop in the East Village and came home with three of the four LPs that the 13th Floor Elevators had recorded for International Artists of Houston. It was January of 1970; how it was that I'd not heard of them before that I cannot say. By the end of 1971 I had managed to speak with Danny Galindo, traded some letters with him. At the time none of the Elevators were talking publicly about the fate of the band. I didn't know that Roky was in the hospital at Rusk, or that Stacy was looking at prison. In 1978 I resumed my poking about in Texas, albeit by telephone. Along the way I spoke with Gordon Bynum, Esq; Lelan Rogers, John Ike Walton (who told me about a kalimba he had designed and built). I exchanged a couple of letters with Reverend Danny Thomas, then living in the Carolinas. These last made me feel good; I had become a fundamentalist Baptist Sunday School teacher after a leedle too much LSD in 1971. I knew no peace. Without knowing it, I had spoken with Roky's mother Evelyn, and some cheerful woman whose last name was Bunnell. Ms. Bunnell asked if I had ever spoken with Stacy? No, not yet. Lemme give y'all his parent's phone number, they'll relay your message to him. Thank you!Five minutes later I was speaking with Stacy's father, G. C., whose cheerfulness came through the telephone and left me with a warm glow. That's what Texians do, it's in their blood. He told me that Stacy would be home in a day or so and that I should expect his call.I did not expect him to call. Hey, I'm from New Jersey. Two days later was Saturday. Saturday morning. My daughter was playing on her bedroom floor. The phone rang.“Hiya! This is Roy! Can I help you?” “You sure can!,” came a soft friendly male voice, “m'name's Stacy Sutherland and I'm returnin a phone call to you, I guess! How're y'all doin?” I almost blacked out. We talked for better than two hours. We exchanged addresses. My plan then, to write the history of the Elevators. I wrote to him. He wrote to me. His wife Bunni called and we talked also. More than once when I called the ranch in Kerrville, I spoke with his mother, Sybil. She was angelic, there is no other word to describe her. In August there was an envelope from Houston in the mailbox. Racing inside I tore it open and I read Bunni's message: Stacy is dead. It all stopped. I was sitting on a coffee table and I began to cry. My wife wanted to know what was going on; I held the letter out to her; she read it and sat down with me and we held each other in our grief. I couldn't speak. I had one thought. A light has gone out.Over the ensuing three years Sybil Sutherland and I spoke on the phone, we traded letters. Thanks to my own stupidity, life engulfed me for many years. Thinking that I had lost all of the material in my Elevators' archive, in 2006 or so I posted an entry on a LiveJournal blog about them; I had a real go at looking for the stuff but came up empty handed. Vicki Ayo emailed me a few years later about this; I apologized to her for having lost all of those letters.Last year I was going over some boxes of old papers. Cut them open, what eez thees?, thence the recycling can. One such box yielded a stack of letters. Hmm. Dear Mr. Waidler, although I'd rather call you Roy.......I sent all of it to Vicki. She kept a promise to Stacy that I could not keep. That promise unfolds in this book. When I read it with Sarai and Ceannt, we cried. Sitting outside at two in the morning, it was as if he was looking down at us saying, "Hey man! We made it! We won!"In hoc signo transitRoy Waidler

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. his unfortunate but brilliant life is being discovered by fans across the world By Joseph Compiled mostly from near-lost letters written by Stacy's mother, friends, as well as often chilling accounts from the woman who would take his life in 1978, this is a loving tribute to the late 13th Floor Elevators guitarist. Stacy's story has often been overshadowed by the equally troubled tale of bandmate Roky Erickson, but not any longer. Finally, his unfortunate but brilliant life is being discovered by fans across the world, and thanks to Vicki Welch Ayo, his memory and music will be livin' on for many years to come. Highly recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fun read. mostly correspondence in letters By john beckham fun read. mostly correspondence in letters. and, to the right people. interesting pics. you read the bad and the good about this pioneer guitarist. heck! the whole band were pioneers! nice to see someone take the time to document this event before all involved passed on. in the geocities days, I had a virtual tour of his grave. I had no pinpoint directions how to find the cemetery, just a map to guide me to town, but drove straight up to the monument somehow. took a nap at the grave, heard a squeaky swing set in the distance with kids playing, mockingbirds, grasshoppers. was a peaceful place. the way home was a very strange experience I won't go into.
