This book is intended to serve as a compact manual of concepts and symbols used in critical thinking and formal logic. While most people believe that they can present a sound argument, or spot a faulty one, the majority are often unaware of the errors they make. This is particularly true when numbers or statistical evidence are involved. Logic is a valuable skill explicitly required in many pursuits including higher education, the sciences, law, engineering, security, medicine, information technology, and mathematics, to name a few. However it is often not formally taught in these fields. The aim of this book is to provide a basic but firm foundation in the concepts and symbols of formal reasoning for those who may want to take this study further, or who are pursuing studies or vocations that require logic, or who are just curious. To make learning easier, the notation used has been chosen to be consistent, symmetrical, intuitive, and widely used.

This book could be given to any high school or university student.Working for several years in IT security, I have a practical familiarity with some areas of logic. Boolean searches, rules and filters, and the chance nature of security event correlation in IPS and SIEM systems. I had also studied basic Boolean logic in IT courses. However, what this book provided was a straightforward and easy to follow progression explaining the concepts behind statements, logical operations, arguments, categorisation, and reasoning with probability about situations where uncertainty is involved. Each chapter laid the groundwork for the ideas covered in the next. It tied together many of the fragments I had understood as logic, and expanded on them to illuminate a complete picture of the workings of the scientific mind.Using an easy to follow system of symbols and forms to describe how we can think about complex situations, Learning Logic allows us to describe and understand how we can make sense of the world. The examples are from everyday situations, and illustrate how confusing data can be organised and simplified. One of the ideas I found most interesting and valuable was the explanation of detection and evidence.I think this book will be useful not only for technical professionals, but for anyone with an interest in how to organise and understand logical thinking.

Radford What do politicians, fundamentalist preachers, global warming deniers, and Madison Avenue pitch men have in common? They all rely on faulty logic to convince you that they have some special insight into reality. Stephen Plowright's latest book, Learning Logic, is a powerful antidote to the fallacies, non sequiturs, and outright logical blunders underlying many of the arguments and assertions we encounter every day. The heart of the book is Plowright's presentation of the symbols and operations of formal logical analysis. Written in accessible, non-technical language, the book covers propositional and predicate logic, set theory, and probability, with a consistent system of notation that emphasizes the unity of these seemingly diverse topics. Practical exercises and puzzles allow the reader to test and review her grasp of the material, and the book's substantive content is sandwiched between a pair of brief but thought-provoking essays on the importance of formal logic (and its handmaiden, the scientific method) in enabling us to understand the world. Highly recommended.
