By CNemaz My copy of 'Radical Love' arrived and I dropped everything to spend a delicious, indulgent hour reading every word and perusing every photo. Toni Greaves has presented an intimate look at something 99% of the population will never encounter. I am not Catholic, and I've heard the usual banter about nuns in Catholic schools as well as read Karen Armstrong's arduous, short-lived journey down that path. Poring through this book, however, I cannot help but sense an undercurrent of change as modern, 21st Century women heed a call which has proven timeless. Greaves' images (and her words) left me filled with admiration for her subject, for her, and with an overwhelming sense of peace and gratitude for the devotion of these women on behalf of the world.As a documentary photographer myself, I am inspired. As a human being, I am in awe.

I love these images By Carli Davidson I love these images, I found myself in a moment wanting the sweetness of being surrounded by sisters that comes with being a nun... and I'm as much of a heathen as you can possibly imagine. Really humanizing and haunting. I look forward to contemplating these photos more. Training Fred is a personal favorite.

An astounding, powerful book By Barbara Ludwig Coleman I'm not a writer so I won't be able to fully give justice to what this book means to me and what emotions it evokes, but being a graphic designer and working with photographers enables me to give you some sense of the power of what I've experienced in reading and viewing it (time and time again I might add; it's that powerful). I've had the distinct pleasure of working with Ms. Greaves on a project for Cleveland Clinic, one of the top five hospitals in the country, and that experience alone wowed me. Toni is beyond a photographer/photo journalist: She was able to capture the acute illness of most of our patients while at the same time being discreet in shooting their sickness and their pain. She also endeared herself to many of the patients I would venture to say due to her truly caring nature. This book, Radical Love, some of whose photos I had the pleasure of seeing before, but most I have not, reminds me of the grace, caring, and fearlessness which Toni brings to her work. It's not just the tonality, the cropping, the in-camera capture of each photo, but the breadth and depth of humanity in pictorially telling the story of Sister Lauren. It brings me to tears and yet I can be laughing several pages further into it. It is a book I do and will treasure for many a year, and I plan on sharing it with my colleagues who also had the pleasure of meeting Toni and being amazed by her work. They will be astounded, as will you.

Excellent essays By Barbara Stahura The power of Ken Lamberton's "Beyond Desert Walls: Essays from Prison" comes from its amazing, unflinching honesty joined with elegant writing - a combination that, for me, is irresistible in personal essay or memoir. A Teacher of the Year in the 1980s, Lamberton later spent a dozen years in prison for an offense even he describes as despicable. Yet it was in prison that he found himself and honed his writing skills. His first book of essays, "Wilderness and Razor Wire," won the 2002 John Burroughs Medal for outstanding nature writing; written while he was incarcerated, it eloquently describes the little bits of nature available to him within an Arizona prison and how they saved him.While "Beyond Desert Walls" is also about nature (specifically the Sonoran Desert of southeastern Arizona), it is more about Lamberton himself and how he got into the predicament that put him behind bars. Describing this over the course of several essays is where his honesty really comes to the fore. It's also about his wife, Karen, and her stubborn determination to stick by him - she even became a paralegal to assist with his case - and how she believed, as he wrote, that he was "worth salvaging." And it's about Lamberton's belief in himself as he creates a new, more introspective and truthful life as a faithful husband, devoted father, and freelance writer.In my opinion, Lamberton does for prose what another remarkable ex-convict, Jimmy Santiago Baca, does for poetry.

By Amazon Customer I am not a naturalist or bird lover or a lover of critters, but I found Beyond Desert Walls informative, educational, and entertaining. Again, it was hard to put the book down. I was amazed at how many chances he took while on his nature treks, but soon found that this is what drove him to commit the deeds that landed him in prison.Ken is an excellent writer who thrives on mesmerizing his readers. I would recommend this and other books he has written.

Born in Antwerp in 1941 and a member of Magnum Photos since 1982, Harry Gruyaert revolutionized creative and experimental uses of color in the 1970s and 1980s. It reminds me that not all street photography is about getting in someone's face with a camera and flash and freaking them out while you snap their photo. Color, line, geometry and just one great image after another.

It's somber, kind of melancholic - a deep, thick color saturation with a Kodachrome red hangover but one that seems to support his perspective about the human condition. There's a sense that he knows our absurd situation well enough but also sees a beauty in our trying to keep so many balls in the air at once.

Rather mediocre work overall By A photographer Although having been compared to some of my favorite artists like Saul Leiter, Alex Webb, William Eggleston and others due to his use of color, I simply cannot get into Harry Gruyaert's photography. Not that some of it is not impressive, it's just that he seems to change color palettes and techniques too much to produce consistency. Some of the photos here are simply dreadful. His 1972 TV images apparently were praised at the time as being unique yet taking pictures of distorted television images was commonplace among photographers I knew personally during this period. I also did it and, like others, just considered it an exercise rather than serious work. We all tossed out our slides like painters throwing away failed practice drawings. Other images presented here are weak and, in some cases, the colors are so off they make the subjects look ill.There is no doubt Gruyaert has made a successful career from his work so it's hard to criticize his vision. Still, it leaves me unenthusiastic.

About the Author In his mid teens, Franco Spoto was fascinated with the sounds that a human voice could make. At first inspired by recordings of Mario Lanza, Enrico Caruso, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, his fascination soon led to his own joy in singing and curiosity about the body as instrument for all voices. Research since his teens into the body, the mind and the spirit of singing, while by no means finished, culminates in the first book of what is planned as a series, SINGING, Nature’s Gift to You. With formal education at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School, his CV includes a faculty position at Bluffton University, solo engagements with Leonard Bernstein and The New York Philharmonic, Aaron Copland and Maxim Shostokovich on the one hand and Sammy Cahn on the other. From a Broadway revival of The Most Happy Fella to Verdi’s Requiem, Britten’s Canticle III for Tenor, Horn and Piano, Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin and sold-out engagements at Caesar’s, Atlantic City singing everything from Weill’s “Speak Low” to Verdi’s “Libiamo”, Franco Spoto has been able to enjoy performing an unusually wide variety of musical styles. By Thomas C Hack Mr. Spoto's love of the art of singing shines through in this gem of a book. In a clear and persuasive manner, he explains the technical building blocks that will help singers at every level find their most beautiful voice and it has some of the best vocal exercises I've come across. Singers who follow Franco's method will find themselves singing with greater ease and artistry. Especially helpful is his exploration of the mind/body connection. As you think, so shall you sing!

If you're going to spend time posting Facebook group promos, using a spreadsheet is the best way to do so.2) The group descriptions are also useful as is the explanation of the distinction between review exchanges and review swaps.Down sides:1) Facebook groups are not an effective way to sell books. Expect to reach hundreds of thousands of group members to sell maybe a handful of books. So while the book is efficient, it's just providing you with a more efficient way to waste time on a form of marketing that no longer works.2) Minor proofreading errors.

I would have given it my first ever one star if the book had not delivered on the title. The book seems to be written by a non-native English speaker, without adequate oversight to check for competence. There are multiple wrong words, extra or missing words, and sentence fragments. I got the book free, so I have little room to complain about not getting my money's worth! I would have been upset had I paid for it.

If I read the install instructions corectly the book teaches python 3 which is not backkward campatible with python 2. There are subtle differences enough to make a python 3 program not work in python 2. Python 2 from my research at this point in 2015 is more widely used.from what I saw it's a good guide t get your feet wet.(note: I mostly skimmed the book after the first chapter)I did not personall try any of the code in this book. My education level on the subject is 50% through the python course on code academy.In other words, I am still a noob at this

Very good intro to Python programming By Albert Gonzalez Being a software engineer, everyone automatically assumes that I know everything about all of the different programming languages that exist. When in fact, I don't. The truth is, no software engineer does. I know a few of them like the back of my hand, and a few others quite a bit, but there are some that I have zero experience with. Python was one of those that I had never used before. So I got this book to change that. So glad I did, it's a really good book for anyone wanting to learn it, not just engineers. From a\understanding the applications to developing sample programs, it covers it all. I will most definitely be reading it again and again as I aim to master this language. Great resource.

I initially got this book for my younger brother who wants to get into programming, and he loved it! This book is great for beginner as well as more advanced python programmers like myself. It covers a wide range of useful basic and advanced features of the language, from "Hello World" to sending emails and GUI. Very good to use as a reference guide while coding! Definitely recommend that you check out this book if you are into programming. If you want to learn coding for the first time, python is the best language to start with. It is easy and straightforward, yet very powerful. Worth a read!

About the Author

Brian Overland published his first article in a professional math journal at age 14.

 

After graduating from Yale, he began working on large commercial projects in C and Basic, including an irrigation-control system used all over the world. He also tutored students in math, computer programming, and writing, as well as lecturing to classes at Microsoft and at the community-college level. On the side, he found an outlet for his lifelong love of writing by publishing film and drama reviews in local newspapers. His qualifications as an author of technical books are nearly unique because they involve so much real programming and teaching experience, as well as writing.

 

In his 10 years at Microsoft, he was a tester, author, programmer, and manager. As a technical writer, he became an expert on advanced utilities, such as the linker and assembler, and was the “go-to” guy for writing about new technology. His biggest achievement was probably organizing the entire documentation set for Visual Basic 1.0 and having a leading role in teaching the “object-based” way of programming that was so new at the time. He was also a member of the Visual C++ 1.0 team.

 

Since then, he has been involved with the formation of new start-up companies (sometimes as CEO). He is currently working on a novel.

I finally decided that this would be the year I would at least start the foundation. As an older learner (mid 50's), it is a bit harder of a slog than learning something new when you are in your twenties. I am finding that you need a bunch of different sources and books in order to understand some of the concepts and reinforce them. This book has been very helpful in my quest. The author uses a lot of interesting math and probability based examples. There are examples based on finding prime numbers, Fibonacci series and the famous Monty Hall Let's Make a Deal probability problem. The author has an engaging style, the chapters aren't too long and he explains the concepts well. There are a few typos but the author has an errata web page - so really not much of an issue.

By Kyle Tipton It's been good so far but he mentions at the beginning of the book that you can find the answers to the exercises that he presents you with at the end of a subject on his website brianoverland.com. I have went there and not discovered any further resources for this book or any of his other books. It just gives me a link to go buy it. Why say something in the book about it and not make the information available? I know you will find out if the program works the way you want it to if it does the correct things but what if you get stuck?C++ Without Fear: A Beginner's Guide That Makes You Feel Smart (3rd Edition)

Then later on he again says that you should've left it out, and you'll get warnings - again, it's there.Also, something about a Video lesson/demonstration - yet the ebook version didn't have any links, etc. to it. So, i'm clearly missing something.

By Xilene I was really amazed by this book, I'm no expert at all in Programming, this is actually my first book about it and I thought I was going to be completely confused with all the code lines and everything but I wasn't the book has a very effective and easy way of teaching all the basics about programming and I understood easily all the examples in every page. I recommend it for beginners and people who want to remember some basics things.

By Alexa Adams This book is an excellent resource for experienced programmers who want to learn the breadth of contemporary C# and associated parts of the .NET framework. The depth of the coverage on each subject will take you to no more than a medium level of knowledge, so if you need to go deeper you'll want to find other resources. It provides a nice balance of breadth and depth.

Thought I am not an expert on programming this book made me realize that I can still pursue programming. By keep practicing on this book and continue studying I may become an expert on programming someday!
