A great book for patterns but not the best for beginners By Pizor The Knitter's Handbook is a beautiful book with dozens of great color photos that give you tons of ideas of different things to knit. Most of the explanations and techniques are fairly well explained, however, if you've never knitted before or are getting ready for your fist pattern (like me), this book might be a little hard to follow.I found that some of the basic explanations for knitting, purling or fixing mistakes seemed a little too quick. To me, it always felt like one diagram and explanation was left out. I'm sure to a more experienced knitter, the explanations would be sufficient, but for a newbie, they seemed a bit vague. Saying that, there's still a lot of useful information and instruction in the book. I am glad I bought it, though I'm still looking for a simple book filled with lots of detailed photos that go step by step, not just beginning and end photos. Incidentally, the photos in this book are only of the patterns. The instructions use drawings, not photos.

I was looking around for a new reference book or two , now that i feel i am (nose up in the air, lol just kidding) beyond my beginning book (maran guide to knitting and crocheting, which was pretty good for beginners) My point is that while i still like the maran guide just fine, i wanted another reference book to make sure i was getting the whole picture, and one that maybe went into depth a bit more.I looked around a lot!! And this one has enough info, but not TOO much. the pictures are great, the stitch patterns and samples are gorgeous!!!!I dont think there is all that much about learning to knit. Yes, it has the basic knit and purl stitch, but i dont think it would be enough to teach a total beginner, so if you know NOTHING about knitting, you may need a knitting friend or another book to use in conjunction, just to get the whole idea. Maybe a online video, there are so many.BUT once you get the basic stitch down, this book is FANTASTIC!! I don't remember how much it has concerning short rows, (harumph, i just ran to look, it doesnt look like it has them listed at all, altho sock heels are covered briefly) so it doesnt have every advanced technique you'd like to see, but short rows were covered really well in some of my specialty books anyway. This is more for basic stuff, how to avoid mistakes, how to fix mistakes, and how to do such-an-such a stitch. a Very good book. GORGEOUS stitches, lots of cables, bobbles, stuff like that. No projects, but you can make your own from the stitches.BTW, i coupled it with the Knitter's answer book and have a pretty good reference section in my knit bag :-)

It is better than described [I SAY NEW] and it arrived b4 estimated delivery date. I have several of Eleanor Van Zandt's books. They all deliver! She has very good direction of the techniques in her books and the pictures are big enough to match your sample with hers to see if you're sampe look alike. I just love ALL her books. I'm sorry to be vague but I'm anxious to get into my book and get started with some of her techniques and stitches. Thank You SandDollarSales & Eleanor Van Zandt :>SMILES(: 5 Stars for both of you.
