Even though I have an MFA in Creative Writing and teach graduate courses on writing, I found this book incredibly helpful. Not only is everything you ever wanted to know about flash fiction in this little book, but the writing prompts are excellent. I can't wait to get started writing what see I see through a keyhole or pretending I'm a fly on the wall!

This how-to instructs the writer in how to be brief, how to get to the matter's dark heart, how to omit needless words, phrases, images in order to tell the tale, whether this story is fiction or nonfiction. In a brilliant fiction/nonfiction of her own, the author begins with a flash she wrote called "Agoraclaustrophobia." This powerful suspenseful story throws down the gauntlet, showing the writer that Kaye Linden knows how to engage the reader in "a flash." Also amazing: the story's setting is a strange exotic landscape, dangerous yet alluring.I teach creative nonfiction at the Writer's Center, where I will recommend this brilliant book to other writers. The prompts here will help the writer learn brevity. I find as I write this I am taking Kaye Linden's advice. I am seeking brevity. No matter what you write this wonderful BRIEF book will aid you.

Baxter Writers who participate in Kay Linden’s courses on flash fiction rave about what they learn in a few short weeks. From her class notes, Linden has pulled 35 tips for writing passionately but succinctly. She has mastered the art of flash. I recently had the pleasure of reading aloud to a writers group one of her creative nonfiction piece, “Forgotten,” published in the journal, Bacopa, A Literary Review, 2014. "Forgotten" illustrates how carefully Linden crafts her tales. She describes her aging father and his new wife and ends with four short lines that say it all: “My father, world traveler, collector of treasure, collector of trash.” When I teach my next class on memoir writing at Santa Fe, I’ll use many of the suggestions from her book when we discuss tightening—what should stay, what should go.
