1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great small guide from well known authors By David Brown I go on occasional pelagic birding trips, primarily from New Jersey and Delaware. Mr Howell has literally written the book on the pelagic bird species of North America ("Petrels, Albatrosses, & Storm-Petrels of North America"). That book along with "Peterson Reference Guide to Seawatching: Eastern Waterbirds in Flight" thoroughly cover the identification of essentially any bird you would see on a pelagic trip, but are large and heavy books. This guide is quite the opposite, in that it is very compact and thin and is something that can easily be taken on the boat.It covers the species that you will encounter. If you are a beginner or are refreshing your knowledge, this guide is probably the best way to quickly get all the information that you need to know to have a clue of what you will see on a pelagic or whale watching trip. It really gives you the bottom line about each species without overloading you with too many details. The photography is amazing with many photos of each species and lines pointing out field marks.I have little knowledge of non-birds, but many of the species covered in this books are things we have encountered on the trips I've been on, such as Pilot Whale, Sperm Whale, Risso's Dolphin, Loggerhead Turtle, flying fish, Portuguese Man O'War, etc.If you are a beginning pelagic birder, this guide gives you the information you need to get familiar with the species you will see and in my opinion makes it easier for beginners to learn than generic field guides or the more detailed texts.For the purpose of serving as a small guide that can be reviewed before and during trips out onto the ocean for the basic identification of common species, this book does a great job and that is why I have given it 5 stars. Just flipping through it makes me wish I were out on the ocean right now.

By simple....it shows images (often composites for direct comparison) of wildlife with clear, concise descriptions on its identity. It is small and slim enough (only 63 pages) to carry anywhere but covers all the wildlife expected on the East Coast. Great job by the authors on a very usable guide

By B.ill I sail and scuba off the NC coast so when I saw an ID guide available for this area I was excited, I was looking for a field guide. Measuring in at 5.25 x 8" and 64 pages this guide is quite small so I did not expect it to cover most of the fishes under the surface nor most of the birds in the air. It does cover what one can expect to see at sea when one can't see land. I still want a field guide that covers what this pamphlet covers just better.The white print on the blue seawater of a picture is very hard to read. It would have been great if the whale information had been presented in a manner that would have deduced the type of whale (but that is a field "ID" guide thing). Photoshopping the birds to show the different plumage in a single photo is great. I wish that all animals were given such treatment. Some photos are so small as their contents are hard to discern. We are to compare the photo to a thing we are looking at so the size of the photo is important. I was hoping for a field guide that could be used to ID a dolphin or a bird or a whale. This is an expensive miss.
