BOOK REVIEWS THAT SELL: Discover the Secrets of Getting a Boatload of Great Reviews

Having a good number of high-quality book reviews can make the difference between mediocre books sales and having a best seller. Dr. Webb's last four books have ranked #1 in their categories.

Even after such success, Dr. Webb recognized that he was neglecting an important part of maintaining long-term sales. He concentrated on getting about 15-20 reviews immediately following the release of his books, but he failed to establish the process for getting more and better reviews, setting higher goals for reviews after the book launch. His research and testing for this book will prove themselves within the first week of launch, but also for the extended period following its initial success.

Allan "Don't collect reviews; Connect with reviewers."Self-Published authors will be glad to know that there is a book they can now refer to that explains the ins and outs of gathering reviews for books. The fact is this: As an author who self-promotes [and that's about 99% of us] getting reviews is tough. As authors we have to set up review teams of reliable people who are willing and ready to review your book when its launched; and then, after that, follow up with the people who promised to leave reviews but still haven't. And after that, follow up again...Yes, it takes a lot of work and hustling. With all the books out there, getting those organic reviews [reviews that just come naturally] is excessively difficult. Readers are consuming material so rapidly they aren't slowing down long enough to actually think about what they've just read. Another challenge for authors. In Gary Webb's book "Book Reviews That Sell", he really gets into the truth about getting reviews for books. Gone are the days where you can just rely on a handful of random readers to voluntarily write a review. Or buy reviews. Or ask for a review in exchange for something. So, as authors, we need to be aggressive and tactful with our review strategy. But, we also have to do this while abiding with Amazon's terms of service.Gary delivers the strategies for this as they should be done.He nails it in the section on building street teams. This is one of my favourite parts of the book. As Gary points out, a solid street team can mean the success [or failure] of your book. Gary gives some amazing advice and action steps here for building, nurturing and interacting with your review team.Gary also dives into "Where to get reviews & find book reviewers."This is a great part of the book. If you get nothing from this book at all, this section alone is worth the price of the book [which isn't very expensive]. This part teaches writers, not only the best places to get reviews, but also the worst places to seek them [review swaps, paid for reviews].In this book, not only does Gary show you where and how to find reviewers but, gives solid suggestions on building a relationship with those reviewers that are taking the time to review your book. Sadly, this is a step that many authors fail at. I like that Gary has made a strong point in bringing this to the front and talking about how important it is for your author business. Here are some more great suggestions for getting reviews a suggested by Gary:1. Reach out to bloggers in a similar niche as your book;2. Review the books of other authors and let them know you did this; then when your book is launched, see if they would be interested in giving your book an honest review;3. Use beta readers to find things wrong with your book before launch;4. Use KindleSpy to check other books in your niche for reviews and contact those reviewers;5. Create a secret FB group for beta readers [I like this one!]6. Join Author Marketing Club and use their free tools for finding possible reviewers;7. How to get reviews posted while your book is in pre-order mode. Wow! Great tip.Added Bonuses:-- Downloadable spreadsheet for keeping track of Reviewers [Excellent!]-- A link to a podcast about top reviewers.-- A full list of FREE/PAID REVIEW sites [very helpful!]-- Lots of links to useful sites that is saving you a ton of time doing it yourself.I will now be using this book exclusively as my "go-to" resource for, not just getting reviews, but cultivating relationships with reviewers. Most of the books I have read on collecting reviews have been focused on the #getting" and not the "giving" or "expressing appreciation" for reviewers when they join your tribe. Gary Webb's book covers all the bases and doesn't meet expectations that you would expect but exceeds them.

I was thrilled to get so much valuable guidance free. And today I BOUGHT A COPY for easier availability on my Kindle. This is a book I’m going to study and apply many times.QUALITY REVIEWS is the key phrase in this book – no gimmicks, no exchanges, no fees for reviews. The author, Dr. Webb, has done an in-depth and technically sound presentation. It is both an overview that can be grasped in about an hour of reading, but it is also a much longer education through the links offered and other source materials. Don’t be taken aback by his credentials, "Dr.", for his writing is very easy to understand in everyday language. This book also motivates me to write and market my books in such a way to attract more and better reviewers – not just “reviews.” But to build long-lasting relationships with readers, reviewers and other writers.I benefited greatly from the section on HOW TO AVOID THE DANGERS of having my reviews removed by Amazon. Also, I like the author’s insights into dealing with unfair reviews. Then there’s endorsements—how do I honestly get and use those. BUILDING A TEAM – fellow reviewers and writers who will enable you to do your best in writing and promoting. And all of that with enjoyment rather than struggle and “aim in the dark” methods. This book deals with many, if not all, of my concerns and questions in how to be a better reviewer, writer and publisher. It is also about helping readers get the most value out of their book shopping. The author is making a very valuable contribution to improving the review and writing processes.

By WAYNE DAVIES As a new indie author who has struggled over the past year to obtain book reviews, I’m always looking for help on how to get more quality reviews. So I was eager to read “Book Reviews That Sell” and learn some new strategies. This book provides well-researched information on a critical topic for any self-published author. In a nutshell, the author’s advice is: “Stop trying to collect more reviews. Connect with more reviewers.” He believes that the best thing an indie author can do to get good reviews is to cultivate substantive long-term relationships with reviewers. This approach makes sense to me. The challenge, or course, is that this approach is quite labor intensive and will require more time. The author acknowledges that and suggests that the legwork of relationship-building be delegated to a virtual assistant, since most of this work can be done via email and social media. The book takes you by the hand and shows you how to implement this process of getting reviews by connecting with reviewers. This was my favorite part of the book. The instructions are straightforward, practical and easy to implement. He even includes the exact email he used to connect with prospective reviewers for this book. I can testify that this is that email, because I received one myself a few weeks ago! Because I have posted reviews on Amazon for books about self-publishing, the author contacted me and asked if I’d like to read and review “Book Reviews That Sell.” I accepted his invitation, and I’m glad I did.Gary Webb is a successful indie author himself, and he is implementing the strategies recommended here. I like a man who practices what he preaches! This book was definitely worth reading and I highly recommend it to any self-published author who is looking for an ethical way to increase reviews. The book covers more than just the author’s preferred approach to getting book reviews. It also has chapters on the value of reviews, the recent crackdown by Amazon on fake reviews, and what makes a good review. I wasn’t expecting the author to address these topics, but I’m delighted that he did, because I didn’t realize how little I knew about them until I read this book.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

How to Tell a Story, and Other Essays, by Mark Twain

About the Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 –1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He is noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), called "the Great American Novel", and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which would later provide the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. He apprenticed with a printer. He also worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to his older brother Orion's newspaper. After toiling as a printer in various cities, he became a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River, before heading west to join Orion. He was a failure at gold mining, so he next turned to journalism. While a reporter, he wrote a humorous story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, which proved to be very popular and brought him nationwide attention. His travelogues were also well-received. Twain had found his calling. He achieved great success as a writer and public speaker. His wit and satire earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. However, he lacked financial acumen. Though he made a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he squandered it on various ventures, in particular the Paige Compositor, and was forced to declare bankruptcy. With the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers, however, he eventually overcame his financial troubles. Twain worked hard to ensure that all of his creditors were paid in full, even though his bankruptcy had relieved him of the legal responsibility. Born during a visit by Halley's Comet, he died on its return. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature".

Mark Twain extras By pedal roy Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (Baby Board Books)American writer Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain has given us some literary gems with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and his travel adventures in nineteenth-century Europe and to Australia and New Zealand. Here is is discussing telling rather than writing a story.Humour, he says, is American while comic is English and witty is French. He follows this typically brilliant essay with examples of story telling and some intriguing experiences of mental telegraphy.Good on you Dodo Press for specialising in rare and out-of-print books.Mark Twain devotees will want to add this slim volume to their collection.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Very funny essays and stories By Israel Drazin Different editions of Twain's (1835-1910) writings contain different stories. This free book for amazon kindle users has five short essays and stories. Twain differentiates between humorous stories, which he says is an American invention, and comic stories, which he claims is English. There is also, he says, the witty story, which is French, but he does not discuss it in this volume. The humorous story depends on how it is told, the other two "on the matter." The humorous story is told by word of mouth. It can go on and on with no apparent purpose other than to be funny. The joy is in the telling and it is an art to tell it well. He gives an example of a humorous story - The Wounded Soldier. He then gives an example of how a humorous story should be told - The Golden Arm. He shows by the dialect and by directions to the reader how it should be told. He emphasizes the importance of pauses and occasional noises just at the right time and with the right length. Included in this volume is an essay telling of four incidences that he says happened to him. The title is Mental Telepathy Again. In each tale, another person who is far from him thinks something and he senses it. This essay is followed by The Invalid's Story. It is a very funny tale of how a healthy man became an invalid when he thought he was transporting the dead body of his friend to his parents when, because of a mix up, the crate contains guns and smelly limburger cheese.

Her passion is encouraging kids to find their love of music and she loves giving parents pointers on how to make that happen. I know I’m a bit new to the world of eBooks, but I love how I’m able to access this on my computer, iPad, or smart phone (Galaxy S3 if you’re wondering.) All you have to do is download the free Kindle Reading App on your device and you’re ready to go. Teachers - this is a great book to recommend to parents. When a new student starts lessons, this should be a standard link that you send to their parents. They can read it on their phone or tablet while they wait during lesson time!2) The Tips are Organized into Easy-to-Use Sections. Looking for an instant practice idea? Check out the “Top Ten Things You Can Do Right Now.” Trying to motivate a student who is down on their abilities? Check out “Attitude is Everything.” There are even sections that highlight how a student can continue to practice outside of the practice room – including links to lots of great music apps.3) Tracy is Super Creative. The tips in this e-book will help you think outside of the practice box. Are you tired of fighting against students who say they don’t want to practice? Tracy has some fantastic ideas to help avoid arguments. She helps make practicing fun and interesting by suggesting unique ways to get your student excited to get to the piano bench. I particularly love her idea of the “practice hat”!4) You Can’t Beat the Price. This e-book is available for only $2.99. There are 102 tips (yes, there’s a bonus one at the end!), which means you are paying $0.03 per tip. Add in the great 10% discount codes that Tracy includes for a couple of resources, and this is a fantastic bargain.

I am happy to have access to this book so I can refer back to it for ideas for a long time to come! Out of the many links provided, I did find one link that was outdated.(I was provided with a free copy for review purposes, but the opinions offered above are completely my own.)

Okay little may not be the right word as it is 96 pages long of intergalactic doodles. It measures 8.5x10 inches in size. The cover is think and sturdy. I can see this holding up to a long time of use. This would be a cute book for amateur artist or someone wanting to unwind with playful doodles.I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

Many of the doodles are very similar not just on the same topic page but from section to section. Then there are the topics that don't make sense or fit the theme of the book.I would have given it one star, but there are some cute doodles and some items that are clever, but I wouldn't recommend this book to you unless you are completing your set of the series. The other titles I have from this set are great and I am sure there will be future books in the series I will enjoy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read For Yourself By Valicity Garris This is a collection of short stories and essays based on the life of the writer, a combination of fiction and reality that is interesting at some points and puzzling at others. I am probably the WORST person Tavon could have approached for a review. I have mixed feelings for this piece. It’s a good concept and it is written quite well but I feel like it’s full of nothing but negativity, generalization, and complaints. I am not the type of person to put up with whiners. We’ve all got a sob story but if you have time to tell yours then you’re not working hard enough. You should chase your dreams so hard there’s no time to think about the past. The world is so ugly and Tavon gives us a close up of that from his point of view. Part of me wants to feel sympathetic toward the “poor black man, from a poor black family, raised in a poor black neighborhood,”—his words not mine—but I can’t. Actually, I refuse. Because when you want something bad enough, you make it happen. No matter your color or condition of living. And it seems that’s what Tavon has decided to do, but I can’t find his effort beyond the mound of complaints and tales of woe.Just take a moment and imagine if Martin Luther King Jr. had the same negative attitude expressed in Tavon’s writing...There’s a lot of crude stereotyping here. About the attitudes toward the homeless, about women and their mindset toward ‘nice guys’, the government, a twisted view of Chick-Fil-A and its relation to homosexuals, the governmental oppression of blacks, and even Ebola. There is no happiness in this piece, which may be due to a lack of joy in the author’s perspective on things, but there isn’t even any hope. I’ve never met anyone who is actively working on their dreams but complains the entire time. One of my favorite lines of the book… “I am a young man with a dream most women can’t fathom to believe. Writing is my ONLY ticket out. And women only see writing as a hobby.”I’d like to take this moment to admit that I am, indeed, a 22-year-old, naturally born woman who has self-published multiple books. I’d also like to recognize JK Rowling, EL James, and Danielle Steel—all women, all billionaires, and all WRITERS. Ms. Steel is currently the bestselling author ALIVE and the fourth bestselling author of all time. So please, PLEASE, tell me how women ‘can’t fathom’ your precious, incomprehensible dream, sir…?So, after ranting and raving and chucking my copy of this book across the room, why did I give three stars to a piece I didn’t enjoy? Because I can see why others would like this. People like to be angry, they love hearing about the black struggle, how easy is it to jump on the bandwagon behind white cops abusing black victims? As a person of color myself, it’s all too easy. But I’m not so simple minded. I don’t like whiners or grumblers, I like to see people overcome and you just don’t get that here. Maybe others will love reading about how life just utterly sucks, according to Tavon. Maybe others will love discussing the unfair approach from the US government to Ebola.“How’s the Ebola virus so suddenly curable once it hits two Americans but as long as it was in Africa it was fine if they died from it?”—I guess that’s his insinuation that America didn’t care when Africans were dying, which only adds to the growing flame between blacks and whites in the US. Because, of course, only the White Americans didn’t care, right? And every disease in Africa is America’s responsibility to cure, right?I mean, we could just rejoice in the fact that Ebola is curable at all. But no, instead Tavon focuses on the negatives, nitpicking to a T—as he does throughout his entire book. From A Cold Dark Place is thought provoking but in the wrong way for me. It’s definitely a conversation starter and could even serve as a fine addition to critical thinking course materials. But it is not at all entertaining. If you’ve ever heard of Black Lives Matter, then you don’t need to read this book. If you’ve ever seen Fox News then you don’t need to read this book. If you’ve ever met a black guy working minimum wage complaining about how he can’t get a girlfriend—probably because he complains too much—then you basically have the gist of this book.So there…I’ve written my first negative review and I’m not ashamed because this book pushed me that far. But regardless of how I feel, I would actually recommend this book to others. I WANT other people to read it because I think this could start a fire across the nation. It’s just that annoyingly controversial, like Tavon wants to tick you off or rev you up. I obviously fell for the former. So I may not have liked it but I don’t think ‘making me like it’ was the author’s intention. In all honesty, I think Tavon would be happy to find someone who disagreed with him because, at the very least, it means I took in what he said and paid attention to his craft.Writing is not Tavon’s forte, it is his ability to conjure a reaction from his readers—whether good or bad—and I think that’s something worth a few stars.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. From a Cold, Dark Place, it Certainly is By Graham Downs Note: I use the Goodreads rating system, so my two stars means "It was okay".I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but I was probably the wrong person for the author to ask. It's not really my thing. It's just a collection of random memories from the author's life (although I'm not sure how true they are), along with a couple of rather short pieces of fiction, and a poem at the end. From a cold, dark place, it certainly is, I'll give it that. Lots of depression, sex, and drugs. Some of the stories held my attention; others I couldn't understand. There's quite a bit of black American slang, and quite a few cultural references that I didn't get, because I'm not American, and I don't really have any experience with the lifestyle the author's talking about.I will say the narrator is very misogynistic, because descriptions of women as "bitches" and "bits" abound, along with the feeling that women only exist to provide pleasure to men. I can understand if the characters in the story feel that way, but then those references should be kept to dialogue. Since the author describes this book as true stories from his life, one can only assume that he personally feels that way about women, too... or perhaps felt that way about them at one time, but we don't know how many years ago these stories look place, and there isn't any personal development evident in the narrator.Race definitely plays a big part in this author's mind, too, because basically every character gets introduced, either explicitly by their race ("The Asian guy", "The black man", "The old white dude") or skin colour ("Skin darker than burnt chocolate"). There doesn't seem to be any reason why we should know most of these characters' races, and I can't abide that. To me, a person's race should at best be implied by a name or cultural reference, and only then, if it's absolutely essential to the story. Otherwise, it's irrelevant. The writing wasn't spectacular either, with incorrectly used words, and multiple consecutive sentences starting with "She" or "He" - very little variety in word choice. The fiction was a little better, but not great. I love flash fiction, but every story, no matter how short, should have a beginning, a middle, and an end, and some form of conflict - many of these stories just felt like samples of larger works.Lastly, the formatting of my e-book edition left a lot to be desired. Sometimes it was double-spaced, sometimes it was single spaced, and there was no linked table of contents - which if you read many of my reviews, you'll know is a pretty big issue for me.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Short stories and essays covering the author's life By Whispering Stories **I received a free copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review**"From a Cold Dark Place", is full of short stories and essays about the author’s life. For anyone thinking about reading it I do feel the need to let you know that it is full of swear words and sexual language. In ‘I Envy the Homeless, and what They Represent’ – Michael talks of envying the homeless, and believes they are far more honest with themselves than those with a roof over their heads.I appreciate the author’s views on this matter, however I don’t believe everyone who is homeless is there by choice, some people have no choice but to lay their heads down at the end of the day on the street. In ‘Because I Look Like Donald Glover’ – Michael is going on a car journey with friends to a Caribbean carnival. They stopped the night at a friend’s place. A young woman that he used to fancy. He goes on to describe the party scene at her place in great detail, including the sexual encounter he had with his ‘friend’.In ‘Loathing in Loneliness’ – Michael talks of his fear of dying alone, of being jealous of couples and wanting a girlfriend of his own who understands him. I get a real sense of his loneliness through his words and felt his heightened emotions on the subject. I also felt sorry for him, and hope that his fears won’t come true. There are plenty more stories throughout including ‘A Beautiful World’, ‘Land of the Lost(Fiction)Act 1: Frankie “The Rolling Stone”‘, ‘When I Lost My Virginity’ (This was described in great detail), ‘The Lust for Love(Unfinished Fiction)’ and many more. All showcasing a poignant time in Michael’s life. The one story/essay which I enjoyed the most was ‘Four Letter Word'(Poem) – This is a poem about loving a woman. You can feel the love oozing from the words and I would say it’s his best work and the one that hit me the most.Throughout the book I got a clear picture of the author’s voice in every story. You could feel how raw his emotions were on each subject. If you like autobiographical books and can take the swear words, and at times extreme sexual language, then this is a book that you should read. This though, wasn’t a book I felt I could personally fully connect with and enjoy.Reviewed by Marcia at Whispering Stories Book Blog

Between 1977 and 1980, photographer Charles H. Traub (born 1945) ventured onto the streets of Chicago, New York and various European cities to take photographs of their inhabitants--male and female, young and old-at lunchtime. Colorful and direct, animated and intimate, the portraits are shot close to the subjects, composed seemingly off-the-cuff, focusing on just their heads and shoulders. Each subject reveals something of himself or herself to the camera: the woman who takes the opportunity to pose in dignified profile or the one who purses her lips in an exaggerated pout, even the somewhat less fortunate subjects caught adjusting their glasses or blinking. Charles H. Traub: Lunchtime is the first comprehensive publication of these striking color images, which were exhibited in the early 1980s in Chicago, New York and Milan. This volume maintains the cheerfulness and joy of the series, with lively pairings of photographs encouraging viewers to associate one individual with another in a new narrative of the street.

I am sure had they decided to reach out to the SPP guys valuable information could have made this book more detailed. It is thin on pages and information but the information is useful and clearly presented. Can you co-write without reading this book, Yes.Should you? Eh.

I've heard of J.Thorn but never read any of his books. The biggest surprise to me was the lack of depth in this book. Sure, it's less than 60 pages, but still processes could have been covered better. Especially since both authors also know people who co-write, they could have tapped them for insight and a useful compare and contrast section. Thorn includes some background on his previous co-writing projects but it was also quite broad in scope.Never fear though. They do touch on all the basics, the stuff specifically mentioned in the description, so you'll have an idea of how to approach your project. In fact, the section about the writing agreement was probably the most useful. It included a lot of great things to think about and include in your own co-writing agreement. Overall the book is good and useful but surprisingly brief, especially for $2.99.

I wasn't sure how this book would work since I listened to her podcast on her collaboration with J. Thorn. I found the work approachable and it made me want to attempt co-writing a book. Thank you for this publication.

A delightfully imaginative tale of a family pretending to be dinosaurs—with downloadable songs   Have you ever loved dinosaurs so much you wish you could be one? From gentle—but huge—plant eaters to fierce meat eaters, join a family traveling through their day pretending to be 12 different dinosaurs. Inspired by dinosaurs and the kids who love them, composer and musician Marty Haugen conceived this project with his own grandchildren in mind. Enlisting the help of his son Matt and award-winning illustrator Stephanie Mirocha, this book is filled with vivid illustrations that bring the dinosaurs to life. All the dinosaur facts presented are accurate according to today’s scientific research, and a time line at the end of the book provides even more fun dinosaur trivia. Readers can download songs recorded for Marty's I Wanna Be a Dinosaur album that relate to each of the dinosaurs in the book.

The story line is cozy, the family setting is intimate, and the fun-filled illustrations are dramatic as well as true-to-life insofar as dinosaurs are concerned. I especially liked the softness of the drawings and the facial expressions of the family members in the story. While these animals could be frightening to the very young, they are drawn in a settling that downplays their ferocity. A double-spread at the end of the story provides up-to-date scientific information on twelve prehistoric animals as well as a timeline. Readers can download a free mp3 containing songs adapted to accompany this story._Hope Irvin Marston, author of MY LITTLE BOOK OF BALD EAGLES.
