About the Author Originally from Ireland, James is a writer who has spent time living in Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, and the United Kingdom. While living in Germany he broke nearly every single one of these rules, but writing a book about what not to do in Germany means he is able to put each cultural faux pas down to 'research'. - Niklas is originally from Germany and has lived in several countries including Sweden and China. After working for a number of international teams at several companies, he realised that his colleagues were both intrigued and humoured by some of the 'German' things he did. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, funny read with many uncommon insights By EC So funny and a great tool for Ausländer who want to get better acquainted with Germany... I'm an American expat living in Germany so I've read a lot of these kinds of books/essays/etc over the years and this is probably the best one yet. Many regurgitate the same old cliches about Germans being punctual and not crossing the street when the light is red, but German Men Sit Down to Pee has really unique insights--even the title is something that I used to laugh at an old boyfriend for but never realized it was a cultural phenomenon. It's well-written overall, a pleasant, easy read, and has lots of good-to-know anecdotes about bureaucracy, the "administrative police" that give tickets for civil offences, and other subjects that inevitably surprise people that move here from other countries. Great purchase/gift for any newbie to Germany, and also just a funny little guide for anyone who's interested in German culture. I'll be giving it to students and longer-term visitors for sure.

Martindale This is a fun but genuinely helpful book that gives newcomers, expats, and visitors to Deutschland good, accurate information and insight about German customs--all while making you chuckle. A pretty fast read, I wish this had been around before I moved to Germany! I had worried that it would just be like reading a few blog posts or top tens on the Internet, but it wasn't. Although some of the information is familiar to me after over 3 years of living here as an expat, I still managed to learn something. The author provides historical and cultural references within his anecdotes, so while the book reads fast and primarily entertains, you *do* walk away feeling like you've learned something. That's important, and I think this book made the grade.

A nice, funny and useful piece of reading By Amazon Customer If there’s one country that seems to be the favourite target of several stereotypes, it’s definitely Germany. While some of them are by all means exaggerated, several of them are, in fact, true, to my view at least!And “German Man Sit Down to Pee...” is definitely quite a collection of them! I’ve experienced myself some of them in the 2 years since I've moved to Germany and I’ll just some up now my “top 10” insights which proved to be perfectly right!1. Germans DO seem to have every insurance policy available out there2. Work time is for work (and ALMOST nothing else)3. You DO have to bring cake on your birthday/thesis presentation/first day in the office/last day in the office4. Having a hobby is important (and has to be taken as seriously as possible)5. Germans do “go Dutch when paying in a restaurant” (one of the best inventions ever, although I never heard of it being called “Dutch” before).6. The sit down when you pee part: I had no clue of this particular one, but after asking around (oh, yes, I did that!!) it turned out to be generally true, at least in what concerns the situation at home.7. Recycle: they day I moved in my first shared flat (with Germans) and found the different garbage containers: for paper, aluminium waste, biodegradable, plastic and glass (white, green and brown!!) came, in fact, with the great feeling of finally doing the right thing.8. Cycling is very “in” around here!9. Nazi jokes are to be avoided: sometimes, over a beer or two, this topic might have come up a few times, but, indeed it was NEVER a topic for jokes.10. There is an “asparagus season”! At least in Bavaria!While I’ve read many exaggeration on this topic, this book seems to be quite accurate. Surprisingly enough, however, most of the Germans I’ve met are not so keen on punctuality, quite a few of them have a thing for crossing the street on red light and most of the people I’ve come across are really (really) polite and nice in their speech even upon disapproval.However, I really enjoyed the reading: funny, easy to follow, well researched! As a newcomer to Germany, it is interesting to compare the authors’ experiences, views and conclusions with my own! It is definitely a useful and pleasant read. I highly recommend it to anyone planning on coming/moving to Germany!

Birley Dr. Carson has had a distinguished career as a neurosurgeon, and has received a lot of recognition for that. Unfortunately, the environment of the operating room bears little resemblance,balance to the halal of higher learning where the Constitution is studied in depth.As a book intended to help uninformed citizens about what their Constitution contains, it succeeds at about the middle-school level. The undercurrent of political blather deuces from the current campaign for President of the US is a distraction. I received this product free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.

About the Author

Ed Maciorowski is the co-founder and co-owner of BrickPicker.com. He has been a LEGO collector since 1973, when his parents gave him his first set (710 Wrecker with Car). Ed is now an investor as well, with over 6,000 sets in his collection and a current market value well into the six figures. He and his brother, Jeff, got the idea to create the online LEGO price and investing guide after Ed discovered that a 10179 Millennium Falcon set he bought for $399 was selling for $800-$1,200 on eBay two years later. The price for that set is now nearly $4,000. Ed also is a regular contributor in the LEGO-themed magazine, BLOCKS.

Jeff Maciorowski is the co-founder and co-owner of BrickPicker.com. He is a senior website engineer for a $40 million market research company and specializes in multiple web technologies, including Cold Fusion, jQuery, Oracle, and mySQL. Jeff built Brickpicker.com from the ground up and it is now the third busiest LEGO-themed website in the world that attracts over five million visitors annually. Wonderful book that offers a different perspective at the world of Lego By Tony If you are looking for a book dedicated to specific topics such as minifigures or specific themes, this might not be for you. DK has been publishing those books since 2010. Instead, Jeff and Ed Maciorowski take readers in a wonderful journey exploring iconic Lego sets with summaries, facts, excellent pictures, price values and opinions on popularity of each set. The book also clearly states that like other forms of investing, profits are not guaranteed. Not every Lego set appreciates in value.This book can easily be compared to a stock market investing guide that lists summaries and details on stock value for each S&P 500 company. However, not many investment guides contain such beautiful photography and is well designed. Honestly this book is designed for the coffee table. A hardcover edition would be welcomed.While a Kindle edition is available, it is not identical to the paperback. Some page details are missing in the Kindle edition that would have me recommend the paperback version instead.Disclaimer : This book contains some photographs taken by me. If you're a collector or fan of LEGO sets, you'll probably like THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO COLLECTIBLE LEGO SETS; IDENTIFICATION AND PRICE GUIDE. Its only real drawback is that the prices are already out of date, as of the date of publication, and are kind of low (in varying degrees). The book generally limits itself to LEGO sets that were created and released from 2000 and after, but includes a handful of pre-2000 sets (e.g., 8480 Space Shuttle; 6086 Black Knight's Castle).The prices are drawn from eBay auction sales listings--which is an acceptable benchmark source, as far as I'm concerned. However, once a LEGO set is retired (as are most of the sets in this book), the price goes up and up with market demand. Thus no "price guide" can ever keep up, as long as older LEGO sets continue to be popular and desirable. Still, the Price Guide at the end of the book is fascinating, as it analyzes the sets with their calculated ROI% (return on investment percentage from the retail price). The appreciation on the rarest sets can be more than 1000% over the original retail price!The identification portion does NOT go out of date, and is valuable for collectors, sellers, and ordinary fans like myself. The listing for each set states: (1) set number and name; (2) year released; (3) no. of pieces; (4) minifigures; (5) original retail price; (6) current price for a new set; and (7) current price for a used set. There is an illustration showing what the set looks like, and a short text discussing interesting facts about the set (especially facts that may affect its future value as a collectible, such as early retirement that usually affects the rarity). This is the only book I've found that includes the original retail prices for retired sets.The Introduction includes a checklist of things that a novice should look for in selecting LEGO sets for investments. These are (1) rare pieces and minifigures; (2) licensed sets; (3) large sets with 1,000 pieces or more; (4) sets with low price per piece ratios; (5) sets with short production runs; (6) limited edition sets; (7) small sets and polybags, especially seasonal sets; and (8) unique sets. Each of the above checklist items is explained in more detail. There is also a lot of good advice about the drawbacks of purchasing LEGO sets for later resale as collectibles (e.g., the boxes require huge amounts of space).The entries for the sets are organized by the LEGO themes: Ch. 1 Advanced Models; Ch. 2 Architecture; Ch. 3 Batman; Ch. 4 Bionicle; Ch. 5 Castle; Ch. 6 City; Ch. 7 Creator; Ch. 8 Dino; Ch. 9 Friends; Ch. 10 Harry Potter; Ch. 11 Hero Factory; Ch. 12 Ideas/CUUSOO; Ch. 13 Indiana Jones; Ch. 14 Legends of Chima; Ch. 15 The LEGO Movie; Ch. 16 Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit; Ch. 17 Monster Fighters; Ch. 18 Ninjago; Ch. 19 Pirates/Pirates of the Caribbean; Ch. 20 Seasonal; Ch. 21 Space; Ch. 22 Star Wars UCS; Ch. 23 Star Wars Non-UCS; Ch. 24 Superheroes; Ch. 25 Technic; Ch. 26 Trains; Ch. 27 Vintage Pre-2000; Ch. 28 Miscellaneous. The book also contains a Price Guide, Glossary, Bibliography, and Author Biographical Information.This book displays perfectly in the Kindle edition on my iPad. This is a reference book for collectors that is also entertaining for fans like myself. If you're less interested in prices and more interested in looking at the details of the sets themselves, you might want to consider Great LEGO Sets: A Visual History.

By BR For any fan of LEGO, this book is great for the in-depth reviews of the most iconic and collectible LEGO sets of the modern era. The pictures and layout of the book are amazing and it is very easy to read, whether you just want to look at the pictures of these great LEGO sets or read the details that make these sets stand out on their own. This is not only a LEGO collectible book, it's also a guide that has tips on how you should take care of your sets to retain maximum value and it also gives you indications of past/future trends when it comes to picking sets that may be a good investments for your future. Many of the sets outlined in the book will just continue to appreciate and haven't seen their full investment potential. Back to building...
