About the Author

Will Shortz has been the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times since 1993. He is also the puzzlemaster on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday and is founder and director of the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. He has edited countless books of crossword puzzles, Sudoku, KenKen, and all manner of brain-busters.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. It's still a good set of 75 NY Times crosswords By Patricia What happened!? The description of this book is blatantly incorrect. It claims "Special commentary will appear along with each puzzle and give clever insight into the puzzle-solving world" but no text appears at all. It's just the usual format of a puzzle without commentary. The "special introduction" by Will Shortz is only 2 pages and is very general. The short 1-paragraph bios of each puzzle maker are also quite general, and unfortunately don't "add a new dimension" as the description claims.It's still a good set of 75 NY Times crosswords, but I wouldn't have special ordered it if the description had told the truth.

Hoping for more By WalksWithCats I thought there would be more information about the puzzle-creation process in general and maybe some puzzle history. The "who they are and how they do it" feature is limited to a total of two pages. Also, I prefer the portability of the 6" 9" format over the 8" x 10" size of this one. Otherwise, Will Shortz-edited puzzles always get five stars.

There are thumbnail bios of the creators, which probably provide all you need to know about them, but there is absolutely no "how they do it," i.e. nothing in this book to assist people who are trying to make crossword puzzles or who would appreciate some insight into how they are constructed.The book is not spiral bound, which makes it difficult to keep it open to the puzzle you are working on. The paper is cheap.The date of the puzzle is provided, which is appreciated for clues that may reflect what were current events when the puzzle was drafted, e.g. "governor of Illinois." However, the day of the week is not given, and most people doing the NYT puzzle want to know if it is an easy Monday or big challenge Saturday. Sure, I could look up the day of the week, but who wants to do that for 100 puzzles?The biggest disappointment is that the titles for the Sunday puzzles are not included. This really is a disservice. The title of the Sunday puzzle gives a clue as to the theme answers. Without the title, the puzzle is not complete. I'm sure the puzzlemakers did not appreciate this. Naming the Sunday puzzle is part of the creative process.Will Shortz, if you read this review, please post the Sunday puzzle titles here. This was a horrible lapse on your part.

The latest installment in the series is another helpful book for fiction writers and covers a topic we must all think about while writing: using sensory details in our description.Jessica begins by reminding writers why she wrote these books and how they can help writers with their craft. "But it [the Nutshell series] will help you to realize that you can, little by little, end up with a brilliant piece of work." The other thing she explains to us is the SIX senses. Many of you are probably wondering where the sixth sense comes in--especially if you've seen the movie with Bruce Willis. The six senses that Jessica includes in her book are: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and . . . instinct. Finally, she explains the best way to use the book to improve your own writing.Each of the "transitions" (sections) of the book introduce a BLEAK passage, or one without sensory detail. Then she wants readers/writers to write their own BOLD passage, one full of sensory detail. She also warns not to use the actual sense words too much, such as smell or see--be creative when you are working sensory details into your writing. After you write your own BOLD passage, Jessica shows you one of her own.Then she has a section after each of the BOLD passages called: "Which Senses Have Been Used and How?" During this part of each transition, she explains the sensory details in the BOLD passage to show how details can be embedded into the narrative AND how to show details instead of telling them. She encourages you to go back and revise your own BOLD passage after reading her example and explanation. The print book has note pages for you to record your thoughts.This is a fun writing how-to book because Jessica makes you think, write, study, learn, and improve. It's like a writing workshop in a book for under $5.00, too! Helps Writers Learn How to Revise Their Own Work By Angela Mackintosh I’m a big fan of the “In a Nutshell” series, and The Six Senses In a Nutshell is an excellent addition. If you have trouble including sensory detail in your prose, this handy little guide of exercises will help bring your writing to life! Like the rest of the series, these guides work best if you actually do the exercises. Only then will you discover your own writing style and voice. I found that working through the guide helped me pinpoint the areas in my own novel that lacked vivid setting and description. It’s so hard to edit your own work, but Jessica Bell’s guides have been invaluable for teaching me the fine art of self-editing and revision. I highly recommend this guide as a standalone for those wanting to improve the use of senses in their writing, but I believe the guides work best in conjunction with one another. They also make great gifts for writers, especially those in your critique group!

Hayes Ninja Slayer Kills, which is an adaptation of a novel that isnt published in america, is an accessible and fast paced mature take on the ninja action genre of stories. The plot may be been there done that offering nothing new beyond cybernetics tied into the ninjas, but man is it charming. I found myself initially turned off by how standard it was but by the time the second arc was going on, I started to really want to see Ninja Slayer-san succeed in his mission. The enemies too with their personalities ended up making it enjoyable, Darkninja-san was easily the one to make this special as well as the first major enemy. I even liked the sensei too. Im hyped for more of this series just to see where it goes as the Six Gates antagonists of the dark syndicate get a focus to take down Ninja Slayer-san.In terms of translation quality and readability, it was on the more challenging side. It appeared that the editor and translator decided to go with using two types of translation pages for this instead of footnotes on a page or using their translated terms in the text bubble. For people who are familiar to anime and some Japanese words, they wouldnt have trouble understanding gomen and domo, but for others it would be annoying turning to the end of the volume to understand these terms as well as many more technical way of the ninja type of terms. I would have preferred the translated words or footnotes be used in the pages with the words instead of going for the stylish choice and putting it at the end of the volume. Also, this manga leaves the honorifics in the translation as well. Oh the positive side, there were no typos anywhere. The text flowed easily. Sound effects were translated underneath the Japanese characters (katakana). Extras (design sheets of the characters) were translated as well which was pleasing. The design commentary ended up being pretty chuckle inducing at times. There was also a translated afterword.All in all, Ninja Slayer Kills may be a story that we've all encountered before but its pleasing and stylish artwork, cybernetic ninjas, page spreads that ooze coolness in everyday imaginable, and charming characters, makes it worth checking out.

Graphic, Edgy, Violent Goodness By OutlawPoet It's been a long time since I've read any Manga and what a reintroduction this was!Ninja Slayer Kills is violent, graphic, and a bit of cyberpunk ninja killing goodness. In his intro, the author entreats you to go to the back of the book and read his glossary prior to starting the book. I would agree that you should do so. While many of the words are common, the author has infused his own nuances into the definitions of these words, This is important because those nuances add to the world building here.Koutarou Sekine further explains that he hoped to make this accessible to new Manga readers and those new to this world. As a reader far removed from manga (it became a horrendously expensive hobby for me once upon a time), he was largely successful. It did take me a little bit to get up to speed on the story, but once I was, I was hooked.Please note that, while in English, this is very Japanese Manga - don't expect anything Americanized. The graphics are very traditional, while still being modern and edgy.I'm afraid my very expensive hobby has returned. I want to read more of this!

I am familiar with graphic novels in that I know of their existence. The first thing I noticed and I'm sure everyone who reads these books are familiar with, is that you read the book backwards. You start on what would be the last page of a regular book and instead of reading the pages from left to right, you read them from right to left. Interesting to say the least, but after a few pages it seemed pretty normal.The story itself was fun but I had trouble trying to decipher the illustrations. To be honest it was hard to follow the first time I read it, so I read it again and gleaned moe information that made the story make more sense. The illustrations need improvement, but as I am not familiar with this type of work, it may just be the style that was confusing.I do appreciate the translations to the action sound symbols and the glossary of terms in the back. That added depth to the story I would have otherwise glossed over.I went with four stars for the story and the glossary. I think the graphics were more at three stars because they were in my opinion, confusing.

By Paul Silverman Ordered this book because I have been a long time follower of the News To Live By blog and have always found it very helpful. It combines some of the best advice from the blog with a bunch of new useful information. It is very well organized, everything is easy to find, and it provides a ton of useful information. In addition to templates for each letter/email/message/conversation, there are summaries of reasoning behind everything. I learned about some mistakes I have been making for years!

Several employers (including my current one) indicated that my cover letter was the reason they gave me a second look, from a pile of similar looking letters and resumes. His individualized system is easy to adapt, and frankly makes applying for jobs more about self exploration and finding a job that matches your best traits. Can't recommend it enough!

You can be playing a song and realize the publisher has mixed the pages up and inserted a page from a different song in the middle of the music. The missing correct section is no where to be found in the book. Contacted the publisher a month ago hoping to get the rest of the music. They've never bothered to respond.

Purchased the newer edition. Now it recommends you go to Youtube for the videos. No other major difference that I can see.
