5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A very insightful autobiography! By R. Watts A very insightful autobiography from one of the music communities most elusive, yet talented members. Founding member of Joy Division & New Order gives a wonderful first-hand account of his early days as a child growing up in Salford, England during its darker days, to a single mother suffering from CP and confined to a wheelchair. I honestly had no idea of the depressed state of his childhood until reading this book. There is a lot of somber reading material throughout the first quarter of the book, but it certainly gives the reader a deeper appreciation of Bernard. Sumner, as well as other artists who perhaps have gone through similar situations during their childhood. Naturally there is a lot written about the Joy Division years and this section is certainly not without its share of sadness, what with singer Ian Curtis' depression and bouts of epileptic seizures. It's never pleasent to read things such as this, but the friendship and support that Bernard gave Curtis during his life is very uplifting. The chapters on the transition between Joy Division and New Order are very interesting, as are the chapters written about their time in the studio and Bernard's discovery of the various electronic studio equipment that New Order had employed during the recording of their albums. His perspective on the Hacienda is entertaining and of course he touches on the issues surrounding New Order and former bassist Peter Hook. There's no trash talking---it's actually very "high road" and Sumner makes his stance on the matter quite effectively. Very entertaining if you like New Order or even Joy Division, but still a great read for the casual fan looking for something new to read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. the Peter Hook book about Joy Division was incredibly detailed By Royal Fork Bass This was well-written and had a manageable length. With such a long span of time to cover, he does breeze through a lot of time periods and just cherry picks random events to elaborate on. By comparison, the Peter Hook book about Joy Division was incredibly detailed, although not as eloquently written as this one.Overall I enjoyed it and learned a lot about New Order, Joy Division, and Mr. Sumner.

When I read it, I got insight into Barney's personality after feeling he was inscrutable for many years. Great inner content expressed well enough for me to feel the transference of his person energy. I was sad when I finished the book. Just wish he had written more about Electronic. Having read Hooky's books, I'll say this: Hooky's an entertaining and funny writer, but definitely an embellisher, and, I suspect, a liar. Barney's book, while not as funny (as Hooky's) felt pure, positive, and true. I felt like I was getting more of what I get when I listen to him sing and play. Highly recommended.

After reading so much negative garbage about Freemasonry, I bought this book out of curiosity. And when I opened it, boy was I shocked. This book contains all the duegard signs, the illusions, secret hand shakes, and passwords for the first three degrees. It gives the entire initiation process for the first three degrees, from the begining to the ending. It also contains the lectures and the story behind each degree. This book also has the opening of the lodge. This is a must book for anybody who wants to get a peep inside the lodge. Even though this book is packed with a lot of good information, and give you a lot of insight on the craft and if you study it and somehow be able to master it, you still would not truly be a mason until you come into the Lodge the right way. This book also contains additional degrees on the York Rite side of masonry. The degrees are Mark Master, Past Master, Most Excellent Master, and The Royal Arch. As for me I'm on the Scottish Rite side of masonry, so the additional information is of no use to me, but it's still good information to read. If you want to try and fool somebody by saying you are a mason, with this book you might can pull it off. All you have to master is the first three degrees. But be aware, a true mason will throw some stuff at you that will make your head spin. Don't read this book and then go buy masonic gear or vehicle emblems, because if you cain't protect it, might get taken from you. Their's more to freemasonry than reading a book. I highly recommend this book for anybody who is curious about the craft or anyone who looking to join the Lodge.

A Specific Example of a Wide Subject By HIRAMicLegend This is mildly interesting from a Masonic researchers point of view because the ritual is only somewhat dated. Today's ritual differs by jurisdiction. Most researchers are interested in very old ritual which was never written. This text represents somebody's rendering of some recent past interpretation. Masonically, it is of limited value. The secret of Freemasonry is ineffable. The ritual is designed to make a man think and find the meaning for himself. Read this and know nothing, but have it cause you to seek further light, then you will have something. This is the purpose of the ritual. Do not get hung up in "discovering" Masonry's secret. After all, you can find out everything thing there is to know about it, if you want. The question is: will you do anything with what you learn?

Reading about the rituals of Freemasonry is fascinating, but to see illustrations of the gestures that are described is to take the study up to the next level. Many Masonic symbols are illustrated and codes for reading certain Masonic texts are revealed. This is a handbook for Masons, but those who study without the lodge will gain some insight, from previous reading. This book will not give you a free pass into the lodge...but, it may inspire you to petition one! I keep the Hardback version on-display, beside The Holy Bible and "Freemasonry: A Journey Through Ritual and Symbol," by W. Kirk MacNulty. This Paper-back version is just as impressive as the Hard-back, the other one is simply prettier to look at on the shelf. Either way, you can't lose!

It's more comprehensive than the Operator's Manual for the Spaceship Earth and less dense than Synergetics. A good middle place to get a view of his scope of thinking.

I definitely consider this a fantastic resource on immersion By Amazon Customer I bought The Oxford Handbook of Virtuality to help inform my graduate research and design work in Learning Sciences and Human Development. With 44 chapters written by over 50 of the top authors in the field, I definitely consider this a fantastic resource on immersion, presence, and virtual worlds thinking. Now I wish I had the Kindle version as well, because with 700+ pages, it is definitely time-consuming to go back through when I try to relocate one of the numerous excellent points made by the various authors. Kindle searches make everything a snap. Fortunately this huge hardcover volume looks impressive on my bookshelf, which is somewhat of a compensation for my lost search time. Regardless of which version you buy, you will treasure this book.

It is used in my class at the University of Washington because it is well researched and delivers an enormous amount of content in an easy to read tome.

In a way I was intrigued about his life and work so I decided to read this book.In this book, the author explained how Stephen Colbert was discovered, how he got started in television, and how he ultimately landed the dream job of many comedians. Moreover, this book also explains what else he dedicated his life to, which is pretty surprising.The book may not have included everything I was expecting for about the life of Stephen, but for me this book was great. This book is quite short, but overall, it is very inspiring.

Stephen Colbert, I Am America By Stacy Staruska Stephen Colbert was an important character in my every day life, for many years was an inspiration for me so I'm glad to know that there was a book about himThere were many things I really liked a lot of this book, the whole book is very entertaining, the use of comedy has been very well used and when i finished reading and I have a completely different perspective to Mr. Colbert.The talent and effort of this man has been perfectly captured in this book and I loved it!

By Lou DeVlieger As one of ten children myself who recently got to sit in on a taping of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, I was looking forward to knowing more about the experiences and influences that influenced the shaping of the brilliant Colbert. Instead, I got a piece of junk that had no depth, continuity, or value beyond the superficial. The so-called "book" was so poorly written and edited that I am shocked that anyone would have the courage to publish it. Pure GARBAGE!

What this book has that the other didn't is tons of recipes with cute names like Owie Calming Spray By puppymom I picked this up at a warehouse store. Being new to essential oils, I bought a big book to learn all about them, but found it lacking. What this book has that the other didn't is tons of recipes with cute names like Owie Calming Spray, the chapters are divided up by ailments, Seasonal Ailments, Parenthood and Children, Mental Health, etc. Plus Sections for Spa treatments and Home Cleaning. I found it easy to read and follow the recipes.

I have been using essential oils for a few months, and wanted a book with recipes. This is perfect. The intro gives you 10 basic oils and the recipes introduce 25 others. I wish I had gotten this when I first started using essentials, so I would have had a better idea of which ones to purchase. My essential oil rep was new at selling essential oils, so we've been learning together. In fact, I gave her one of these books. I read all the recipes, picked the ones I most wanted to try and wrote a "grocery list" of the oils I need to do this. My representative is a very happy lady! I can hardly wait for my order to come in so I can try the recipes. I especially like the way the book is formatted by category. I highly recommend this book and will tell everyone I know about it.

Pereau My gal friend loves this book. I bought it for her birthday since she has been showing a growing interest an Oil and herbal approach to relaxation and light medicinal remedies. It was everything I needed for the gift and very much more. Ms. Atkinson's descriptions are clear and written simply...taking a reader step by step through each process from the prospective of a studied and experienced teacher, but never with the airs of pretention found in books of this trade. It was very refreshing to read and not find myself feeling like an outsider looking into the world of the elite.Of course it was then time to wrap and give the book to my friend. :)Time to buy myself a copy...
