38 of 49 people found the following review helpful. Almost worthless By Michael The guide book doesn't really aid the user in any way. More of the information is displayed in that game during the tutorial and loading menus. All the unlockables are also displayed in the game were users shouldn't need a guide. The biggest failure of this guide in in the mission mode for single player or co-op. The guide does not help the user complete the mission mode in any way. I doesn't go over good positions within the maps or tricks that could help you survive the master difficult. The guide does show the locations of the collectibles. Overall, you would learn more watching a "lets play" than trying to buy the guide. The collectible locations and the art that comes with the guide are not worth the price.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. More of a collectible than a reference. By R. Calnan The book is completely unnecessary, and already outdated ... but ...My boys love it, it's a hardcover, more of a collectible than one that you'd plan on using.I say it's unnecessary, because if you play the game with any regularity, you already know that there's not much "to" this game in general. It's a fantastic (95/100 - my own rating) pick up shooter that is very easy to navigate and learn how to play. It's outdated because there was a new map released before the book arrived. Also, this was expected. I did not buy this for it's knowledge of the game. I bought it as a collector item for my boys to have.

11 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Could be better, but still okay. By TW Brown, Author, Editor, and Reviewer I do notice the low ratings are not from VERIFIED purchases and I do see that those sorts of reviews usually gain a lot of "helpful" votes because that is the society we love in these days. I gave this a skimming and then settled in to go over specifics. While I will say that it would have been nice to have an inside track to locations of some of the things (like where I can take control of a walker), overall, there a few handy tips and suggestions on your best card load out depending on where your adventure takes place. It is an okay book with a few handy things. Is it great or perfect? No. But I liked the prints included and the book itself looks nice. I guess since it is not filled with ways to cheat, some folks won;t like it, but overall, it is decent.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A well of wisdom By Valve Nut This book is a fascinating tour of what happens in a typical amp, especially under dynamic overdrive conditions, i.e. when it is hit with signal bursts, not just steady, bench-test sine waves. It's almost a picture tutorial book, showing you with oscillograms (mostly) how signals clip, compress, block (or not), and recover as they pass through various overdriven stages. There are some computer simulations, but mainly they and real measurements of real test circuits, including some beautiful examples of how transfer functions shift and bend during overdrive.Everything is explained from the ground up, beiginning with a simple diode analogy, which leads onto the overdriven valve grid, and even pentode and cascode screen compression effects. It also shows how you can measure various parameters of an output transformer quite simply, although I was a little disappointed that after the effort of measuring these things it doesn't present more info on the behaviour of the final test circuit -only one oscillogram (at the very least I would have expected a plot of frequency response). It's not really a circuit deisgn book, it's more a concept book or even a lecture course, designed to give you a penetrating insight into the dynamic behaviour of overdriven circuits. Even so, it does present an alternative topology for getting overdrive with relative freedom from blocking distortion, while still allowing the dynamic, compressive effects to be tuned to taste -the Low Impedance Overdrive, or LIO concept. It makes an excellent accompanyment to more conventional amp design/analysis books. It is somewhat academic and prosaic at times, and some of the images could do with annotation to reduce the effort of swapping back and forther between text and pictures, but these are small criticisms. If you value design and engineering know-how above mojo and mods, then this book is a well of wisdom.

Some of it was over my head but I still learned a ton and now feel like I have a pretty good idea of what happens when a preamp or power tube is overdriven. If you want to understand guitar tube amps you need this book.

Description User Stories are a great method for expressing stakeholder requirements, whether your projects follow an Agile, Iterative, or a Waterfall methodology. This book presents two common User Story structures to help you ensure that your User Stories have all the required components and that they express the true business need as succinctly as possible. It offers 5 simple rules to ensure that your User Stories are the best that they can be. That, in turn, will reduce the amount of time needed in User Story elaboration and discussion with the development team. After reading this book you will be able to: • Translate business needs into well-structured User Stories • Write User Stories that express the what and avoid the how • Apply five simple rules for writing effective User Stories • Clarify assumptions in User Stories by adding context • Identify and remove ambiguous and subjective terms and phrases in User Stories • Select the appropriate format for expressing User Stories for Agile Projects • Write stakeholder requirements in User Story format that solve business problems • Elaborate User Stories to identify measurable non-functional requirements Author’s Note The term “User Story” is a relative new addition to our language and its definition is evolving. In today’s parlance, a complete User Story has three primary components, namely the "Card", the "Conversation", and the "Criteria". Different roles are responsible for creating each component. The “Card” expresses a business need. A representative of the business community is responsible for expressing the business need. Historically (and for practical reasons) the “Card” is the User Story from the perspective of the business community. Since we wrote this book specifically to address that audience, we use the term “User Story” in that context throughout. The “Conversation” is an ongoing discussion between a developer responsible for creating software that meets the business need and the domain expert(s) who defined it (e.g., the original author of the “Card”). The developer initiates the “Conversation” with the domain expert(s) to define the “Criteria” and any additional information the developer needs to create the application. There is much to be written about both the “Conversation” and the “Criteria”, but neither component is dealt with in any detail in this publication. A well-written User Story (“Card”) can drastically reduce the time needed for the “Conversation”. It reduces misinterpretations, misunderstandings, and false starts, thereby paving the way for faster delivery of working software. We chose to limit the content of this publication to the “User Story” as understood by the business community to keep the book focused and address the widest possible audience.

This book does a wonderful job of providing specific examples and tips. I applied this book immediately and feel like anyone who writes user stories can immediately benefit from the advice in this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Okay for the price By malumrob You can probably find all of this information with a Google search, but for $2.99, it is all right there, so I took a chance. I would give it 4 stars if the section on non-functional requirements was better. The information is not a revelation, but it's easy to read and probably good for a new Agile user story writer.

Good expansion on the concept of User Stories By Joshua E Lynch I am in the process of developing my skills in writing user stories for project management purposes. I found this book to provide a good amount of information related to the purpose of User Stories, and how to think about approaching User Stories. I adopted many of the concepts introduced in this book into my work flow almost immediately.

He has worn down the previous version of the Transit Maps of the World so I was very excited to see the updated one. My son is absolutely thrilled with the new one. It has new maps, is thicker with more information, and is such a delight to look at. All ages, from toddlers to elderly, will love this book! There are fascinating facts about trains and the countries, and of course, the routes. My son looks through the maps everyday. The only suggestion I would make is to make some of the maps larger so the stations are easier to read. My son likes to read the stations' names and it is very difficult sometimes. However, we are so grateful for this book. It is the ONLY one we have found that lists train routes. Thank you so much for the absolute Delight!

And for someone who loves to travel, it is perfect to flip through before visiting any one of the many cities included. It would also be a great book to create wall art with the individual maps. There is a typo in the book. Ouch. I have empathy, believe me.

PDF Ebook Young Orson: The Years of Luck and Genius on the Path to Citizen Kane, by Patrick McGilligan

On the centennial of his birth, the defining wunderkind of modern entertainment gets his due in a groundbreaking new biography of his early years—from his first forays in theater and radio to the inspiration and making of Citizen Kane.

In the history of American popular culture, there is no more dramatic story—no swifter or loftier ascent to the pinnacle of success and no more tragic downfall—than that of Orson Welles. In this magisterial biography, Patrick McGilligan brings young Orson into focus as never before. He chronicles Welles’s early life growing up in Wisconsin and Illinois as the son of an alcoholic industrialist and a radical suffragist and classical musician, and the magical early years of his career, including his marriage and affairs, his influential friendships, and his artistic collaborations.

The tales of his youthful achievements were so colorful and improbable that Welles, with his air of mischief, was often thought to have made them up. Now after years of intensive research, McGilligan sorts out fact from fiction and reveals untold, fully documented anecdotes of Welles’s first exploits and triumphs, from starring as a teenager on the Gate Theatre stage in Dublin and bullfighting in Sevilla, to his time in the New York theater and his fraught partnership with John Houseman in the Mercury Theatre, to his arrival in Hollywood and the making of Citizen Kane. Filled with intriguing new insights and startling revelations—including the surprising true origin and meaning of “Rosebud”—Young Orson is a fascinating look at the creative development and influences that shaped this legendary artistic genius.

Young Orson: The Years of Luck and Genius on the Path to Citizen Kane, by Patrick McGilligan

Review “[Young Orson] takes the directorial hero from his birth to the threshold of ‘Citizen Kane.’ I’ve only just started it and can so far confess to fascination and pleasure; the wealth of detail and the measured tempo are up to the Shakespearean complexity of Welles’s character.” (New Yorker)“McGilligan’s Orson is a Welles for a new generation. . . .McGilligan’s book vibrates with uncertainty and risk, and it hums with the possibility that talented people actually can realize their dreams in the forms they choose.” (BookForum)“No one writes biographies of film legends like Patrick McGilligan. . . . It is a meticulous recreation of Welles’s life and achievement up to 1941.” (Daily Beast)“Welles’s native brilliance and his ascent from producing plays as a boy at the Todd School to his conquest of New York theater and radio as an adult has seldom been documented with more clarity.” (Library Journal (starred review))“To read this book is to be taken with just how much meaningful work [Welles] packed into his youth, and awestruck by the self-assurance with which he approached his burgeoning career. . . With McGilligan’s superb biography, we have the definitive portrait of Welles in his youth.” (San Francisco Chronicle Book Review)“Engrossing . . . Exhaustively researched but well-paced and stuffed with beguiling detail, this is a vivid, sympathetic portrait of Welles’s youthful promise and achievement, before the misfires and compromises of his later years.” (Publishers Weekly)“A richly detailed, often nuanced study of Welles’ life and work. It’s a welcome addition to the burgeoning shelf of books on one of America’s most distinctive talents. . . . Although Young Orson reads easily, it is powered by an evenhanded, almost scholarly rigor.” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)“Must reading for anyone interested in the history of film.” (Mark Levine, Booklist (starred review))“Exhaustively researched but well-paced and stuffed with beguiling detail, this is a vivid, sympathetic portrait of Welles’s youthful promise and achievement, before the misfires and compromises of his later years.” (Publishers Weekly)“An indefatigable reporter and masterful biographer, McGilligan has unearthed endless revelations that will change our view of Welles’s. This book is a constant joy to read, showing that the truth about Welles’s upbringing and youthful artistic triumphs is even more remarkable than the legend.” (Joseph McBride, author of What Ever Happened to Orson Welles? and Searching for John Ford)“No other biographer has done such a superb job of investigating Orson Welles’s Midwestern origins and dazzling early success. McGilligan convincingly refutes untruths and myths that others have accepted. This is by far the best book on the most formative period of Welles’s life.” (James Naremore, author of The Magic World of Orson Welles)“A prodigious and illuminating account of the extraordinary life of Orson Welles up to when he turned from theater and radio to launch his fabled movie career. McGilligan blends valuable new reporting with insights from existing sources to draw a bold portrait of the master that can fairly be called definitive.” (George Stevens, Jr., producer and founder of the American Film Institute)“In many ways,Young Orson is my favorite of all the Welles biographies to date. The overall portrait of Welles’s character and background that emerges, uncharacteristically sympathetic, is both dense and persuasive - and a page-turning pleasure to read.” (Jonathan Rosenbaum, author of Goodbye Cinema, Hello Cinephilia)

From the Back Cover

“A remarkable, eye-opening biography . . . McGilligan’s Orson is a Welles for a new generation, [a portrait] in tune with Patti Smith’s Just Kids.”—A. S. Hamrah, Bookforum

No American artist or entertainer has enjoyed a more dramatic rise than Orson Welles. At the age of sixteen, he charmed his way into a precocious acting debut in Dublin’s Gate Theatre. By nineteen, he had published a book on Shakespeare and toured the United States. At twenty, he directed a landmark all-black production of Macbeth in Harlem, and the following year masterminded the legendary WPA production of Marc Blitzstein’s agitprop musical The Cradle Will Rock. After founding the Mercury Theatre, he mounted a radio production of The War of the Worlds that made headlines internationally. Then, at twenty-four, Welles signed a Hollywood contract granting him unprecedented freedom as a writer, director, producer, and star—paving the way for the creation of Citizen Kane, considered by many to be the greatest film in history.

Drawing on years of deep research, acclaimed biographer Patrick McGilligan conjures the young man’s Wisconsin background with Dickensian richness and detail: his childhood as the second son of a troubled industrialist father and a musically gifted, politically active mother; his youthful immersion in theater, opera, and magic in nearby Chicago; his teenage sojourns through rural Ireland, Spain, and the Far East; and his emergence as a maverick theater artist. Sifting fact from legend, McGilligan unearths long-buried writings from Welles’s school years; delves into his relationships with mentors Dr. Maurice Bernstein, Roger Hill, and Thornton Wilder; explores his partnerships with producer John Houseman and actor Joseph Cotten; reveals the truth of his marriage to actress Virginia Nicolson and rumored affairs with actresses Dolores Del Rio and Geraldine Fitzgerald (including a suspect paternity claim); and traces the story of his troubled brother, Dick Welles, whose mysterious decline ran counter to Orson’s swift ascent. And, through it all, we watch in awe as this whirlwind of talent—hailed hopefully from boyhood as a “genius”—collects the raw material that he and his co-writer, the cantankerous Herman J. Mankiewicz, would mold into the story of Charles Foster Kane.

Filled with insight and revelation—including the surprising true origin and meaning of “Rosebud”—Young Orson is an eye-opening look at the arrival of a talent both monumental and misunderstood.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. An absorbing, captivating and scholarly biography By Bookreporter The truly outstanding biography is far more than the story of one person. In the hands of a superb writer, the biography becomes the portrayal of a generation. In addition, readers learn how the subject of the biography was shaped and influenced by the times in which he or she lived. In applying that test, many great biographies come to mind, too many to list in this review. But Patrick McGilligan’s new book is clearly a biography that merits inclusion on this exalted list. It offers insights and details into the early life of an American legend. 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of Orson Welles’ birth, as well as the 75th anniversary of the release of his masterpiece film, Citizen Kane. YOUNG ORSON is a biography commensurate with the greatness of its subject.McGilligan brings substantial credentials to his latest effort. His previous subjects include Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, George Cukor, James Cagney, Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood. He lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, not far from Welles’ birthplace of Kenosha. YOUNG ORSON begins with an introduction of Welles’ parents, Richard and Beatrice. As a resident of Springfield, Illinois, I was interested to learn that Beatrice Ivy Welles grew up in my hometown, and her parents were acquainted with Abraham Lincoln. She was a talented woman who, after the death of her husband, played piano concerts at the Chicago Art Institute to support the family. She died at age 42, when Welles was nine years old.Recognizing that YOUNG ORSON recounts merely 25 years of his life in its 747 pages, readers are not even introduced to Welles until around page 100. Fifty pages later, he is still in the seventh grade. Such attention to detail is reminiscent of Robert Caro’s biographies of Lyndon Johnson, and McGilligan’s superb writing keeps your attention through a very detailed accounting of Welles’ life. While biographers sometimes are reluctant to use or attribute source material from earlier works, McGilligan is more than willing to mention and discuss previous Welles biographies. Based on his own exhaustive research, he takes great pains to provide fresh material that offers interesting insights into the genius that was Orson Welles. Although his parents died when he was very young, they both influenced his life. Welles was a complex man, mercurial in temperament, but so brilliant that most were willing to accept his eccentricities. The accomplishments documented during the quarter-century detailed in YOUNG ORSON are amazing and would be a full lifetime of achievements for most people. As a teenager, Welles starred at the Gates Theater in Dublin. In his early 20s he directed an African-American cast of “Macbeth”in Harlem. With John Houseman he partnered in the Mercury Theater, leading to the iconic Halloween radio broadcast of “The War of the Worlds” that caused panic throughout the American east coast. And, of course, he traveled to Hollywood with almost unlimited authority and gave the world Citizen Kane, still viewed as one of the greatest movies ever. All of these events, along with many others, are recounted in superb detail, taking readers deep into Welles’ life.YOUNG ORSON is an absorbing, captivating and scholarly biography. McGilligan captures a man who truly is an iconic figure in theater and cinema. Along the way, he vividly portrays life in Midwestern America in the first third of the 20th century and the years preceding World War II. In later years, the brilliant promise captured in YOUNG ORSON would often go unfulfilled, but the man chronicled on the pages of this outstanding biography left a list of triumphs that will live for generations to come.Reviewed by Stuart Shiffman

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Tackling life with bravery and courage, YOUNG ORSON is an inspiration By Anthony J. Thorne Welles fans will greatly enjoy this book. I have read four or five Orson Welles biographies over the past thirty years (and will be reading yet another in early 2016 when I start on ONE MAN BAND, the latest volume of Simon Callow's ongoing biography), but this book by Patrick McGilligan is one of the most sympathetic, moving and enjoyable depictions of Welles' early life that you will encounter. McGilligan has dug up a lot of thought-provoking new material, and he offers a rich portrait that made me want to rewatch all my favourite Welles movies and immerse myself in the artistic world of this inspirational figure yet again. As a lifelong Welles fan I would also now like to respectfully pay tribute to his mentor from the Todd School for Boys, Roger Hill. McGilligan makes it clear in YOUNG ORSON that Hill played a massively encouraging role through Orson's formative years (and beyond) in helping the young artist pursue his dreams. The friendship between the two is documented in Todd Tarbox's ORSON WELLES AND ROGER HILL: A FRIENDSHIP IN THREE ACTS, and I will be reading that volume shortly. Highly recommended.

By o.h. lee I have read many biographies of Mr. Welles and, despite the circumscribed time on which McGilligan has focused his story, this is the single best volume I've encountered. Despite the amount of detail, I never felt the writer fell victim to his research; it's an awfully enjoyable ride. I had the great experience of working with Welles during a brief, but fascinating time in the 70's, and so got to know him a bit. The Welles in his 60's is so clearly recognizable in this study. I only wish it had been McGilligan who had undertaken the 4 volume biography and/or the recent book about Welles's last film.
