About the Author In his mid teens, Franco Spoto was fascinated with the sounds that a human voice could make. At first inspired by recordings of Mario Lanza, Enrico Caruso, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, his fascination soon led to his own joy in singing and curiosity about the body as instrument for all voices. Research since his teens into the body, the mind and the spirit of singing, while by no means finished, culminates in the first book of what is planned as a series, SINGING, Nature’s Gift to You. With formal education at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School, his CV includes a faculty position at Bluffton University, solo engagements with Leonard Bernstein and The New York Philharmonic, Aaron Copland and Maxim Shostokovich on the one hand and Sammy Cahn on the other. From a Broadway revival of The Most Happy Fella to Verdi’s Requiem, Britten’s Canticle III for Tenor, Horn and Piano, Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin and sold-out engagements at Caesar’s, Atlantic City singing everything from Weill’s “Speak Low” to Verdi’s “Libiamo”, Franco Spoto has been able to enjoy performing an unusually wide variety of musical styles. A Sullivan Foundation and Puccini Foundation grantee, Franco currently lives in East Chatham, NY, teaching there and in New York City.

Spoto, whose four-decade performing career has encompassed opera, concert, and the best of musical comedy, writes a carefully thought-out, finely detailed practical guide on how to train the singing voice. The outstanding wisdom of his approach, rooted in his successful performing experience, is that he locates the basis of consistent, confident singing technique in THOUGHT and IMAGINATION. By Thomas C Hack Mr. Spoto's love of the art of singing shines through in this gem of a book. In a clear and persuasive manner, he explains the technical building blocks that will help singers at every level find their most beautiful voice and it has some of the best vocal exercises I've come across. Singers who follow Franco's method will find themselves singing with greater ease and artistry. Especially helpful is his exploration of the mind/body connection. As you think, so shall you sing!
