About the Author ELIZABETH CRUCE ALVAREZ has been the managing editor of the Texas Almanac since 2002. She received a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1978 and has a background in both newspaper and textbook publishing. Alvarez has worked as a reporter and editor for newspapers in Missouri, Iowa, and Texas. In 1980, she moved to the Permian Basin, where she was an editor at The Odessa American and traveled extensively throughout Texas. Since 1985, she has lived in Tarrant County, where she was an editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and, later, for Harcourt College Publishers.   ROBERT PLOCHECK, editor, has been with the Texas Almanac since 1994. He is a native of Houston and was raised in Damon on the Gulf Coast. He received a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972 and has worked at the Austin American-Statesman and the Marshall News-Messenger. He served for 15 years as an editor for religious newspapers in Houston and Tyler. For many years, he was a regular contributor to the Religion section of The Dallas Morning News, writing reviews of books and magazines.

My adult son was happy and delighted with it which surprised me.I asked him why he liked it so much. He said that there was so much information in it to read. As a child and teenager he read an old one at my parents house. The title, being the same except for the date, brought to mind many hours spent reading it. His precious GrandParents and their home, along with the old Texas Almanac brought back many great times spent with the old book. Now, new memories are being formed with the 2016-17 Almanac that will hopefully take us all forward many years. It's a book that each Native Texan, or a want to be Native Texan should have in their home and business.

About the Author Jonathan Crichton is a research fellow in the Center of Languages and Cultures Education at the University of South Australia. He has over fifteen years' experience in teaching and research in English language education and has published widely in related areas. He holds a PhD in Linguistics and an MA in Applied Linguistics. His current research focuses on the implications of internationalization for intercultural teaching and learning in higher education.Pieter Koster is a Senior Learning Design Officer at the Center for Learning Innovation, part of the Department of Education and Training in NSW. He has many years experience in English language education and the design and development of learning materials in a wide variety of vocational fields. He is the author of four school textbooks published by MacMillan in Japan and Compass in Korea and Taiwan. He holds an honors degree in Arts and an MA in Applied linguistics.

Dellit I am an educator who does part-time voluntary work with individual young adults learning English. I work with some of my students face-to-face and with others via regular email contact. I am not a trained ESL teacher. I have bought several copies of this book for my students. I have waited for a text like this for some time. It is truly excellent. It sequences learning in a logical way for students. It builds grammar, vocabulary and contextual understandings in ways that my students are responding too very positively. My distance students manage their own learning. There is in-built practice work and skill and knowledge building is carefully planned. The pictures and bubble text are great and contexts and linguistic relationships are very clear. A great learning resource - useful with teachers or without. Can't wait to get Vol 2!

30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic book for beginning ESL students By Kim I found this book at the library, then bought it from Amazon because I wanted to own it. I tutor a very basic ESL learner, and while we've made great strides in pronunciation, I didn't feel like we were getting anywhere with comprehension. This book allows us to practice and repeat the concepts and vocabulary, all in the proper context. This book shows you how to use the language in basic situations, and doesn't clutter the lessons with grammar vocabulary (my student doesn't need to know the words "subject", "object", "predicate", or whatever - she just needs to see how the language works). It's a great book for students with a limited understanding of English, and I highly recommend it!

It was hard to find material that was basic enough, but aimed more towards adults. This book fit the bill perfectly and the students quite like the book. Job well done.

By Crackers4Noël We usually keep several of Uncle John’s Bathroom Readers in the house - for some reason, they are never in the bathroom. The two Christmas themed ones are a standard part of our Christmas decorations. I did not know they are available on Kindle until a few months ago. I noticed my children had a few of the books on our Kindle cloud. I have even bought these as gifts when someone has a long car or plane ride. When the publisher offered a free copy of this book, in electronic format, in exchange for an honest review, I decided to take them up on it to see how it works as a kindle book.For those of you who have not familiar with Uncle John’s, it is a book of bite sized articles (some short, others long) with neat facts, historical stories, as well as stories and facts that are candidates (or included) in Ripley’s Believe It or Not or the Guinness Book of World Records. It is full of facts that are distracting and will give you hours of entertaining conversation when you have nothing else to talk about. We first discovered Uncle John’s when one of my children won it and brought it home as a school prize. I am not a fan of books or reading material in the bathroom but I am, apparently, in the minority. The book is so entertaining that you are often unable to put it down in the bathroom or not.For those of us (me) who prefer to read it outside the bathroom, it makes a great long or short read for waiting in the car or office, or as a work break decompress moment. The kindle version is a bit harder to use (in my view). I normally flip straight to the index and find what I want to read. On the Kindle version, if you are wanting to skip around or to find something else, it is a bit more keystrokes and more difficult than I would prefer.This year’s book is the longest I have come across. There are a few repeats if you have been reading it for many years, but that is inescapable. This version is not themed so the facts and stories are all over the place and there is something for everyone. As an ebook this may bring about home peace to households where everyone in the family is constantly taking the book off. No more looking to see who took the book. Everyone has it on their kindle. Unfortunately, several kindles means reading it and keeping your place can require making sure everyone does not sync their place.I liked the book but I think I will stick to the hard copy version as a gift or purchase. There are few people I know well enough to know their bathroom preferences. I’m just not sure how well received it would be to ask ‘do you take your e-reader into the bathroom?” to someone not living in my own house (let alone in my own house)!

I thought the book was well written and very informative. I knew very little about Buddhism prior to my trip, so the introductory chapters provided a very informative background.I didn’t read the book cover to cover, but looked at the history, the sites we were visiting and the symbols – it added tremendously to my visit to Bhutan, adding context and allowing for a better understanding of the sites being visited. Since most of the tourism in the country focuses around the architecture, this book was the perfect "tourist guide."Since the book is an architecture review, the buildings were grouped by "types" as opposed to geographic locations -- but the sites you are going to visit are easily located in the book. There are ample pictures and graphics which add to understanding.

She amply illustrates the use of Buddhist iconography and the influence of Buddhist history in the region to explain both the structures and their decoration. While this book doesn't have the depth of analysis and historical perspective of the work of Francoise Pommaret, Bhutan's Buddhist Architecture is a great way for anyone who is planning to or has already visited Bhutan to understand and appreciate the country's most significant buildings.

A luminous book of essays by a master of the genre By Jay Parini I'm a great fan of Sam Pickering's essays, and have read many volumes; but this is among the finest of collections, full of wit and rue in equal measures, as when he writes: "What sustains the aged are the trivial and the curious--little matters awaken appetite for life but not lead to intellectual insomnia or rest heaven on the lights causing mental gastritus." He muses wisely on sex and death, on nature's endless bounty, looking at bugs and birds with a loving eye for detail. The is also a book about meandering, about starting off somewhere without knowing quite where the end will lie. This is, of course, what an essay is: a venturing forth. Pickering goes into the world, a happy vagrant, and brings us along for the ride.

Intimate look at the soul of top athletes By Peter As a competitive athlete, journalist, and photographer, I am always looking for inspiration, as well as tips and tricks that I can learn from. I was alerted to this book on social media, and thought that it would be great to see how pro photographers shoot as well as glean some insights from some of the sports top athletes. Although not filled with action photos, I really like this book. The intimate portraits of each of the featured athletes gives one a glimpse into their personalities, competitive spirit, and humanity - really the soul of each of the athletes. The photography is outstanding, the settings are unique yet intimate, and the design and layout of the book is superb. This really is an outstanding book!

By GoodDesign This is an awesome coffee table book and if you love photography and athletes this is a must! Andrea has done an outstanding job creating beautiful portraits of amazing athletes! And the bonus is all the athletes actually write about their own obstacles and inspirations. I was immersed in each athletes story-definitely proof that we can do anything! About the Author Technical writer Joseph Joyner has been fascinated with computers and all things having to do with technology since a very early age. After reading it I still don't know where I stand and what is devops. Is it only a suite of tools that you bundle together to automate as much as you can? Or is it more to it?Finally, the book would benefit from some editor's touch.If it wasn't less than 5$, I'd be very upset.

But at second sight the words seemed not so simple. The title women and fiction might mean, and you may have meant it to mean, women and what they are like, or it might mean women and the fiction that they write; or it might mean women and the fiction that is written about them, or it might mean that somehow all three are inextricably mixed together and you want me to consider them in that light. But when I began to consider the subject in this last way, which seemed the most interesting, I soon saw that it had one fatal drawback. I should never be able to come to a conclusion. I should never be able to fulfil what is, I understand, the first duty of a lecturer to hand you after an hour’s discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantelpiece for ever. All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point — a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." WOOLF’S FAMOUS ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF FEMALE AUTHORS By Steven H Propp Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English author, essayist, publisher, and writer of short stories, regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 118-page Harper paperback edition.]She begins this 1929 book with the statement, “But, you say, we asked you to speak about women and fiction---what has that got to do with a room of one’s own? I will try to explain… I should never be able to fulfill what is, I understand, the first duty of a lecturer---to hand you after an hour’s discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantelpiece forever. All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point---a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction; and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved.” (Pg. 3-4)She reveals that when she attempted to enter a library to read a manuscript of Thackeray, she was told “that ladies are only admitted to the library if accompanied by a Fellow of the College, or furnished with a letter of introduction. That a famous library has been cursed by a woman is a matter of complete indifference to a famous library. Venerable and calm, with all its treasures safe locked within its breast, it sleeps complacently and will, so far as I am concerned, so sleep for ever. Never again will I wake those echoes, never will I ask for that hospitality again, I vowed as I descended the steps in anger.” (Pg. 7-8)She recalls a professor: “Possibly when the professor insisted a little too emphatically upon the inferiority of women, he was concerned not with their inferiority, but with his own superiority. That was what he was protecting rather hot-headedly and with too much emphasis, because it was a jewel to him of the rarest price… Without self-confidence we are as babes in the cradle. And how can we generate this imponderable quality…? By thinking that other people are inferior to oneself. By feeling that one has some innate superiority---it may be wealth, or rank, a straight nose, or the portrait of a grandfather by Romney---for there is no end to the pathetic devices of the human imagination---over other people.” (Pg. 34-35) She adds, “Under the spell of that illusion… They start the day confident… they say to themselves as they go into the room, I am the superior of half the people here, and it is thus that they speak with that self-confidence, that self-assurance, which have had such profound consequences in public life and lead to such curious mores in the margin of the private mind.” (Pg. 36-37)She rhetorically asks, “it is a perennial puzzle why no woman wrote a word of that extraordinary literature when every other man, it seemed, was capable of song or sonnet. What were the conditions in which women lived, I asked myself.” (Pg. 43) She powerfully points out, “I could not help thinking, as I looked at the works of Shakespeare… that… it would have been impossible … for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare. Let me imagine… what would have happened had Shakespeare had a wonderfully gifted sister, called Judith… She was as adventurous, as imaginative, as agog to see the world as he was. But she was not sent to school. She had no chance of learning grammar and logic… She picked up a book now and then… But then her parents came in and told her to mend the stockings or mind the stew and not moon about books and papers… She had the quickest fancy, a gift like her brother’s, for the tune of words. Like him, she had a taste for the theater. She stood at the stage door; she wanted to act, she said. Men laughed in her face… She could get no training in her craft… That, more or less, is how the story would run … if a woman in Shakespeare’s day had had Shakespeare’s genius…” (Pg. 48-50)She suggests, “[In fiction] All these relationships between women… are too simple. So much has been left out, unattempted… almost without exception they are shown in their relation to men. It is strange to think that all the great women of fiction were, until Jane Austen’s day, not only seen by the other sex, but seen only in relation to the other sex. And how small a part of a woman’s life is that; and how little can a man know even of that when he observes it through the black or rosy spectacles which sex puts upon his nose.” (Pg. 86)She concludes, “it is far more important at the moment to know how much money women had and how many rooms than to theorize about their capacities… you may object that in all this I have made too much of the importance of material things. Even allowing a generous margin for symbolism, that five hundred a year stands for the power to contemplate, that a lock on the door means the power to think for oneself…” (Pg. 109-110) She adds, “Intellectual freedom depends upon material things. Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom. And women have always been poor… from the beginning of time. Women have had less intellectual freedom than the sons of Athenian slaves. Women, then, have not had a dog’s chance of writing poetry. That is why I have laid so much stress on money and a room of one’s own.” (Pg. 112)This is a profound and always-timely response to the argument, “Why are there no great women poets/writers/scientists/philosophers?” [Of course, since Woolf wrote in 1929, we now HAVE seen women excel in all these areas, so far fewer people will ask such questions.] This is one of Woolf’s fascinating books, and is of great importance for the development of later feminist thought.
