About the Author

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell) is a full-time author and professional photographer with a background in information technology engineering. He has been an avid photographer since 1968 when his mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera. Darrell has used Nikon cameras and Nikkor lenses since 1980. He has an incurable case of Nikon Acquisition Syndrome (NAS) and delights in working with Nikonian's newest digital cameras. Living near Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway has given him a real concern for the natural environment and a deep interest in nature photography. You'll often find Darrell standing behind a tripod in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. He loves to write, as you can see in the Resources area of the Nikonians Online community (www.Nikonians.org) and at his Master Your Nikon blog (MasterYourNikon.com). He joined the Nikonians community in the year 2000, and his literary contributions led to his invitation to become the founding member of the Nikonians Writers Guild.

They are very detailed in friendly, easy to understand language. This book contains a wealth of information, not just running through the camera's features (step-by-step), but the various camera options are laid out with great detail on how, when, and why you'd use whatever option. It's amazing how much information is packed in this book.Another neat addition are the links offered for online downloadable resources/documents scattered throughout the book.I have the paperback and the digital download as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone that owns a Nikon D750.

I've had the D750 for several months now and his book is helping me learn new things about the camera that I hadn't discovered yet.In order to avoid duplicating himself in multiple places in the book, he gives numerous references to other pages and chapters in the book that requires a certain amount of going back or forward in your reading to see what was being instructed. For that reason of going back/forth, it would be very hard for me personally to read this book in the e-book/Kindle format. That's why I purchased the hard copy.

If you want to get the best out of your D800 THIS is the book for you By Beth R I purchased Mastering the Nikon D750 a few months after I received my Nikon D750.I have had years of experience with Nikon and Canon higher end cameras. I had been using the D750 just fine but thought perhaps there was more to it and that is the reason I purchased this book.I often go in the woods and photograph with my friend who also has a Nikon D750 She uses the owners manual to learn the tips and tricks on how to get the most out of her camera. After just a few days of reading Mastering the Nikon D800 she was AMAZED with all the new ways I had to make the camera works so much better.The next day she purchased a copy and we now trade tips and tricks back and forth. GREAT book that is a necessary compliment to your D750

By Parka [[VIDEOID:f22053c3ca8654167e2920a57bd3e379]]I managed to finish reading this in one sitting and it's quite an enjoyable read.This is more of a visual companion rather than an artbook, and it's a nice companion to the TV series Sleepy Hollow authored by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry.The 176-page paperback focuses on the characters, monsters and locations, making a total of 48 chapters. It's not an episodic guide although of course it makes references to the episodes where the characters and monsters appear.Highlight of the book is the insightful and interesting commentary that talks about the filming process, actors, the making of the costumes, special effects, storytelling and the mythology of Sleepy Hollow. Each character and location is accompanied by commentary. I enjoy reading about how they create the makeup for all the different monsters featured.Monster designs look terrific. TV shows nowadays are pretty good when it comes to dressing up their sets and coming up with good designs comparable to Hollywood film standards.There are lots of pictures included in the form of concept art (not many), TV stills, 3D renders of locations and scenes, photos behind the scenes of actors and close ups of props and makeup. More than half the book are visuals but it's a good blend with information provided.It's a wonderful companion to Sleepy Hollow. Recommended to fans of the show.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent By HK I had read the author's earlier book, The Hairy Hikers, which was a very funny and engaging jaunt through the Pyrenees. In this one, he takes on Mont Blanc in what is a more introspective and serious book than the first. As Le Vay hikes, his experience with nature and his new surroundings conjures memories of his family and history, serving as a kind of therapeutic encounter. The writing is engaging, and while still humorous, leaves the reader wondering about some of the bigger issues in his or her own life as well. At least it did for me. It also left me wishing I could go hike up Mont Blanc myself. For those of a more travel-book orientation, Le Vay also paints a very vivid picture of his surroundings and trails. In all, a very, very enjoyable and stimulating read.

Along the way they discover nature, other walkers and marmots. The author does a good job of weaving alpine and local history, travel anecdotes and personal philosophy throughout the book. Parts of this book were laugh out loud funny but there were also some more serious parts. Enjoy this arm chair travel through Italy, Switzerland, France and Mont Blanc.I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Excerpt from Life and Correspondence of Henry Knox: Major-General in the American Revolutionary ArmyThe materials for this Memoir, prepared a short time since for the "Memorials of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati," have been mainly derived from the original letters and papers of General Knox. These papers, which fill fifty-six large portfolios, include, besides Knox's own letters and military papers, many of the letters of Washington, Greene, and other prominent actors in the Revolution and a variety of documents illustrating the history and settlement of that part of Maine included in the Muscongus or Waldo patent. About the year 1840 they were placed by the family in the hands of Hon. Charles S. Daveis of Portland, who began, but did not finish, a memoir of Knox; and in 1853 they were transferred, with the same object, to Mr. Joseph Willard of Boston, a gentleman eminently qualified for the task, but who unfortunately died before its completion. During their transit by water from Portland to Boston, the vessel in which they were embarked was wrecked, and they were slightly injured, having been for some hours submerged.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I only wish it were updated/expanded for all of the material that's been accumulated since 1873! I think the Henry Knox Montpelier site has over 40 Microfilm rolls, so it would probably increase the size of the book considerably. But until that happens, this is the best you're going to get.

By David W As a husband and father, I'm horrified to know that 1 in 5 women is the victim of attempted or completed rape and nearly 1 in 2 women experiences sexual violence in her lifetime. As if that weren't bad enough, victims of sexual assault are: 3 times more likely to suffer from depression, 6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol, 26 times more likely to abuse drugs, and 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide. I know from first hand observation how devastating the impact can be, having previously run a therapeutic boarding school dedicated to helping troubled teens recover from crisis, and seen how many of our young women's tragic, downward spirals were triggered or exacerbated by such incidents.I, therefore, have tremendous appreciation for Mr. Foley's book, as the single most important resource I have found to help my wife, my daughter, and anyone else who will read it to greatly improve their chances of escaping such tragedy. Mr. Foley's methodology has literally been developed and refined at the peril of his and countless other brave men and women's lives, in the service of their country against the most sophisticated of operators. That Mr. Foley would adapt his expertise to help women both detect the predators in their world, and know what to do about it, is a beautiful gift. It's no wonder that he is in increasing demand as a public speaker at universities, churches, on the radio, and on TV.Of course statistics don't describe the value of a woman's peace of mind - or that of those who love her. I, my wife, and my daughter have all read, discussed, and benefitted from this wonderful book. Thank you, Mr. Foley.

I especially was intrigued by the chapters about vetting dates by watching their behavior on early dates, and asking questions that might elucidate character traits to watch out for, both positive and negative.I recommend this book highly!! Fun, interesting, quick read.

About the Author

Mark Holden earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering at Duke University in 1978. During his time there, he participated in an acoustic study of Duke’s student union as part of a physics course. This experience came full circle when he worked on the renovation of Duke’s Baldwin Hall (explored as a case study within this text). He has lectured at Harvard’s School of Design, Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering, is a member of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants, the United States Institute of Theater Technology (USITT), and an elected fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.

By Kindle Customer Completely ignored inverters and waste water treatment, and only lightly skimmed over the other subjects that it tried to address. This book is probably useful to someone who has lived in a large city all their lives, and never been camping. For anyone else, it's a waste.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A Magical Guidebook By Eric Wagner I truly loved this book. It seems a distillation of Thomson's lifetime fascination with the movies. It responds to how we watch movies in 2015 and how we might watch them in the future.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Don't Just Sit There By Rob Hardy You buy your ticket, and maybe some popcorn, and take your seat in a theater. Or, more likely, you put the DVD in the player or call for a flow from the streaming service. And that’s how you watch a movie. You don’t need to know how to do it, you just do. So why look at a book called _How to Watch a Movie_ (Knopf)? Well, for one thing, the author is David Thomson, a prolific critic and author of _The New Biographical Dictionary of Film_. For another thing, Thomson probably knows a lot more about movies than you do, and thinks about them more, and could increase your enjoyment of what for many is a passive sitting and letting the movie flow in. Plus, he might just have some suggested movies that you ought to make sure you see. And also, he is an entertaining writer, and his book is a collection of essays on movies and the experience of watching them, and his love of movies is a joy to read about.Thomson actually sympathizes with the viewers whose history of moviegoing has been “to believe we should relax, take it easy, sit back, and enjoy ourselves.” But there is no such thing as pure enjoyment without thought; and thinking about the workings of a movie can make the movie more rewarding. There is nothing wrong with “good, pleasing films that deserve no more than a single viewing... They are smart, confident entertainments, nicely played, but they have no significant ambition or sense of mystery. They are small stories, well told, and all deeply old-fashioned, even when the effects are very special.” There are for Thomson movies in another category, movies that can be watched repeatedly and seen in different ways at different times of life or with different emphases. There’s _Citizen Kane_ or Bergman’s _Persona_. But you don’t have to go to the art house for examples like this. Thomson writes that when he first saw _Casino_ he didn’t like it; it was one more Scorsese gangster movie. Ten years later, he found it playing regularly on cable and watched it repeatedly; it became a parable of Robert De Niro’s rationality versus Joe Pesci’s madness, or order versus chaos, and “the desperate comedy of De Niro being thwarted at every turn.”So, how do you watch a movie? Keep your eyes open. Enjoy the entertainments that are worth one view, and really worth one, no more. The movies that are more complex, watch them over and over again and value how they change. And keep in mind all the valuable insights Thomson has here on music, editing, cutting, montage, screenplays, money, heroes, and more. Hollywood used to ballyhoo, “Movies are better than ever,” but use the valuable perceptions here to make them so for yourself.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Too Much Non-essential Trivia By Otts Laupus Thompson obviously knows his stuff. But that's the problem with this book- stuff. Much of it is trivia. I have trouble at times with his sentence construction and syntax. Try and figure this one out: "...the truth twenty-four times a second is there as chaperone to the way running the frames together may promote a dream." Or consider: "The legend goes that it was unmediated footage from Vietnam that turned the public against the war there. That begs only one question: that the American public at large never gave up its support for that war." So where is that begging question? Near the end he admits that his book is not about "How to Watch a Movie." However, his comments on the !966 Swedish film "Persona" directed by Ingmar Bergman are clear and perceptive.

Lose is a series that started good and just keeps getting better By Sam the Sham A full-color beaut with two shorts* and a long centerpiece called "Movie Star". DeForge is reaching new levels of design and storytelling. It's wild to see how far he has come since his work just five years ago. Lose is a series that started good and just keeps getting better. "Movie Star" has got the strange surreal vibe DeForge is great at pulling off but has a more poignant and serious tone than previous work.*The two shorts (Adults and Boy) were previously available digitally to subscribers of DeForge's Patreon.com page

Maybe he's putting out too much stuff, but the drawings weren't as detailed and inventive as some of his earlier stuff, and the narratives lacked the stunning weirdness of the earlier issues of lose. Nothing to compete with the Canadian Royal Family or Spotting Deer in this one, but still reasonably decent work.

I could stare at these pages for hours either way, and the longer story about a pair of long lost brothers who are reunited through a father and daughters viewing of cheesy action films really s quite fun to read. Deforge really shows his mastery over the comic form here; the pacing is impeccable, he hits each beat, and his simple figures carry so much expression. His limited pallete, as always, is beautiful, and adds an atmosphere that services the tone of the strip, without just turning it into eye candy. Great read, glad to have it on my shelf.
