David Downton is right up there with illustrators Rene Gruau and Kenneth Block! Great book for the lover of fashion illustration or the aspiring artist who wishes to study the technique of a genius! Loving this book.

Downton, in my humble opinion, is one of the most influential fashion illustrator, and once you view his work, you will understand. His work is minimal, yet so hard to replicate (I've tried believe me, I've tried), and that puts him into a league, which he deserves, all of his own. Okay, enough of the flattery. As for the book, full of illustrations, printed on a nice weighty stock, nicely oversized, and a treat to thumb through. It's a treasury of this illustrator's work.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Headbanger's Ball By Jordan L. Taylor For those who may not know or remember Anthrax was a big deal back in the 80s and early 90s. For metal people, and especially for those of us growing up in rural areas, the only real exposure we had to metal music was Headbanger's Ball on MTV which burned a lot of Anthrax material into our collective brains. Unlike some of the slower plodding metal that was prevalent back then Anthrax's brand of thrash metal was pedal to the metal from beginning to end. Sometimes I will hear an old 80s track of some thrash band and be like 'oh yeah, I remember these guys'. Anthrax is not them, Anthrax is Anthrax. If you grew up listening to these guys, you won't forget them, and when you hear it you'll know what you're listening to.The book itself is well written and candid. Scott Ian is a naturally honest guy, and you will get a little dirt about some of the bands that paralleled Anthrax such as Metallica and Megadeth. I'm finding lately a few metal biographies floating around and some are written poorly while others seem sugar coated. You will find neither in this book. And as expected Scott Ian is such a nice guy the book isn't about him but the people in the periphery of his metal experience. He was a key witness in the explosion of metal music in the 80s, and instead of getting the canned interviews from MTV and overpriced VHS tapes we are now getting something more genuine and honest. Frankly even if you are not into metal, this is a great perspective from an important moment in American music history - and again, as a reminder for some, metal in the 80s had a significant voice and following.The only criticism, which is minor, is the typeface used for the kindle. It sucks basically. But I stopped noticing after about four or five pages.Recommendation: Buy it.

By MizMoore I bought the e-book yesterday and finished it today (I'm a fast reader) and I loved it. I've been an Anthrax fan since "Among the Living" came out and it's always interesting to find out more about the personalities and history behind the music I like - also interesting to find out Scott and I liked a lot of the same early 80's metal bands too. I didn't know about the early Metallica/Anthrax connection in NYC and I thought it was cool that both bands were up and coming at the same time. Scott tells his story in a straightforward and humorous way and this book is a great read for any Anthrax fan or fan of metal biographies. Hope he has a book signing in Philly so I can tell him how much I liked it in person.

By Virgos Merlot To my surprise, this was a book that was almost as good as their last record. Even the introduction by Kirk Hammet was sincere. He discusses the challenges of having the band with all of the various singer changes, early days, their decline in the 90's, the ups and downs financially with actual numbers involved. Anthrax is a band that I always thought was cool and different with a few great songs. I could never find myself listening to an entire Anthrax album to completion like I could with Metallica's "Master of Puppets" or Slayer's "Seasons in the Abyss," but god damn Scott Ian wrote the best music autobiography of the year!

All of these homes are sited in wooded or wilderness areas and their design is staggeringly beautiful. I have been an architect for 37 years and viewing these works is almost a religious experience for me. The designs are richly detailed in both steel, concrete, wood and glass. The houses are perfectly located on beautiful natural sites. The architects both listen to their clients needs but also the needs of the site. Hence the title: LISTENING. Buy all three volumes of this series, if you can.

Based on an exhibition at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Segmented Realities compiles a group of five paintings and ten sculptural paintings by Cuban-American painter José Parlá (born 1973). With an essay by curator Michael Rooks, this hardcover is a gorgeous documentation of Parlá's latest project. Parlá is also known for recently completing a commissioned 90-foot mural for the lobby of One World Trade Center in New York City, a mural at the Barclays Center and also at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

About the Author Jose Parla (born 1973) has received critical acclaim for his works, which lie at the boundary between abstraction and calligraphy. Composed from layers of paint, gestural drawing and found ephemera, his work evokes the histories of urban environments. Parla is a documentarian of city life. In Medias Res, Parla's second solo exhibition with Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York City opened in Chelsea in 2014. In 2012, the 11th Havana Biennial selected The Wrinkles of the City: Havana, Cuba project, a vertically integrated collaboration between Parla and French artist JR, and exhibited in 2013 at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery. Parla and JR co-directed a documentary by the same title that was awarded the Grand Prize for Documentary Short and Best U.S. Premiere Documentary Short in 2013 at The Heartland Film Festival, Indianapolis. In 2014, Parla was commissioned to create a 90-foot-long mural painting for the entrance of One World Trade Center, which he has entitled: ONE: Union of the Senses.

This book was a good introduction for the complete beginner who is looking to understand (in broad terms) all of the various opportunities available in the financial sector. For anyone who grew up in the 80s, 90s, 2000s if you're like me at some point you've had visions of being the next Gordon Gekko, making trades and making fortunes in the market. Looking beyond private equity + corporate raiders of the 80s/90s, It's interesting to read about the numerous and wide array of opportunities in the financial sector, some of which I'd never given any thought to. Looking forward to a follow-up from this author -- we've got the what, now we need the 'how-to'. :) Have heard these jobs typically cater to Ivy-leaguers, so how does the average Joe find the fast track to success? Could make for an interesting follow-up.

It could go a little bit into the detail in my opinion, but i guess author tried to keep it simple and short. It is a good start, i will probably read more on the web and maybe talk to some people in the positions already. Book is motivating for sure.

I've have this incident with a sims prima guide with this material where it rubbed off some ink. it's the type of paper used. That glossy, Thick , sticky feel. Colours are vibrant though. He knows pretty much everything about Yo-Kai Watch at this point By Echota My son was SO thrilled to receive this book to go along with his Yo-Kai watch game. He loves being able to look up all the characters and their stats, and walkthroughs and maps of the levels. The pictures are full color. He keeps this near him always, as he plays Yo-Kai Watch daily, and likes to have this book as a reference for the Yo-Kai.He says it's a very valuable addition to the gameplay. This and YouTube videos, of course. He knows pretty much everything about Yo-Kai Watch at this point. I recommend this highly!

By Aybee Philip Reed's autobiographical account of his firsthand experiences learning how to count cards exceeds expectations because it isn't just an instructional book with colorful and often hilariously spot-on descriptions of Las Vegas, but also a deeply engaging memoir in which blackjack becomes a kind of metaphor for life's challenges. Reed demonstrates a keen ability to seamlessly blend personal anecdotes with the nuts-and-bolts of card-counting, and to bring not just Vegas, but many different gambling venues -- both national and international -- vividly to life. His self-deprecating sense of humor immediately draws the reader in, as do the clever quotes and proverbs at the beginning of each chapter. This works well on so many different levels.

Phillip Reed wasn't a gambler but he went for it and put his money on the line. Oh yea he wrote a book too. This isn't a how-to, though you'll learn some techniques if that's what you want, it's an adventure of someone stepping into a world unknown to most of us. It's pretty scary to put up this kind of dough but Reed does it. I highly recommend this book.

The card counting book that tells a story we were all waiting to hear By Shaney G Dangerously enticing in that it teaches us that MIT Undergraduate entry is not essential to the makeup of a card counter. An honest and exciting book that lets the reader know that card counting is not dead and that it can be learned. Thrilling in that it is written in the first person in near real time and covering the learning process as opposed to merely looking back from lofty heights over a successful and romanticized experience.I read this book in two sittings - would have been a single straight sitting if I could read while driving but my wife and the Irish police force take issue with such practices. I highly recommend this book and am hoping that the author will at some point reveal what happened in his second year counting cards. If that book is ever published, I will be first in line to buy it.

It really never rises above the level of the $5 books on the bargain table near the checkout at B&N.When it does hit those racks in the near future, it'll be the perfect obligatory gift for the person you don't really know or care about, but might haves seen a Bond movie at some point in their life.I'm not sure what the book is really about, or who its intended audience is. Most James Bond fans are at least as familiar with the information in here, and the prose is less than compelling. As another reviewer points out, the text is not without inaccuracies. As a catalog of "cars" it's fairly indiscriminate, and includes cars, helicopters, airplanes, motorcycles etc. I may have missed it it, but it wouldn't surprise me if it included bicycles as well.The book's greatest sin is the photography. This is a coffee table book- but outside of the nicely done dust jacket, there's little to recommend it. The photos in a book are a mix of stock photos, stills, screen caps, and images that were taken at shows. The lighting in most is awful and many are poorly cropped. The layout and choice of photos would be embarrassingly bad if it were a high school kid laying out the entire yearbook the night before it's due. Why, for example, does a still of Roger Moore, cigar in hand, next to a wrecked 1st gen Fox Mustang rate a 2 page spread?As I said, mediocre at best. Horrible at the price.

But I love the cars so saw this as a must have. So disappointed.The book has a strange layout and doesn't tackle the films chronologically. While this may seem a fresh approach it is a sly way to add in a lot of filler without it being as noticeable. The hero cars (barring the DB5) seem to get no preferential treatment over all the other random vehicles in the films (and there are a lot). The last third of the book is reserved for 'other vehicles' and anything that had a motor in or on it is there. Waste of space. There are glaring mistakes in the content. One caption for The Living Daylights car lists it as an Aston Martin V9 Vantage. A V9? Also the author doesn't mention the fact that there were actually two different Aston models featured in the film but made to look as the same car. The FYEO Esprits get a few scant paragraphs while we get pages and pages on the history of Rolls Royce, a brand that is only a background player in the Bond films. The Aston Martin DBS featured in OHMSS has about a page of information on it but then there is not one single picture of it!And that brings me to the pictures. The photography is probably the most offending thing about this tome. Made up of mostly grainy, screen grabs and production stills we've seen a million times over, it really leaves something to be desired. There are snapshots of few cars on exhibition that look like they were taken by someone on holiday. These photos paired with the uninspired writing offers little insight on the cars that the average Bond fan wouldn't already know. I'll keep on waiting for a better one. This is going back.

A pity that either the author (French) or the translator (American) didn't catch that the front fender of a motorcycle (pictured with Sean Connery) clearly reads "Moto Guzzi", while it is identified as a Harley-Davidson in the caption. Makes one wonder what other mistakes exist. What do proof-readers look for?

One is a month by moth overview for my sign, and the other is a day by day guide. I find the "Don't do important things" notations to be helpful. I avoid starting anything on these days as I have found that if I did, events were not usually smooth.

This close and personal portrayal of that time is absolutely genuine and engaging. The author evokes the truth about an American Institution that is so revealing that the reader will immediately appreciate why this story has never been told before!"Not a single word of that blather is even remotely true. I'm a USMA grad and will tell you that there are no "forced marches" in the middle of the night at Camp Buckner to "weed out the weak." Girls are not falling all over themselves to have sex with cadets. Instructors are not simply "administrators" of test material who are only one day ahead in learning the subjects they teach.This book is unreadable - I skimmed it and got angrier with each page. The author talks a lot about his own wisdom and strength and perseverance. But he introduces himself as one who wanted to get the free education and then put up with the Army for five years as obligated. He entered the academy with no intention of a military career - just work the system to get the education he says was delivered by incompetent instructors. All the training he so detested and immediately identified as bogus continues to affect him to the point he still has to "put my mind in neutral."Here's an example of the nonsensical fiction this anonymous author wants you to believe is true and genuine:From page 99 talking about Camp Buckner: "The training was designed to weed out the less strong cadets, both physically and emotionally. Daily 20 mile forced marches, some at 5 AM and some at 10PM were the most effective tools in embarrassing weaker cadets out of the corps. They fell like flies and needed to be medically evacuated. I was fine with it because of my previous experience doing 20 mile hikes with the Boy Scouts.""fell like flies." "had to be medically evacuated" - fortunately for the author, he was in good shape because of the 20 mile hikes when he was a Scout. Think of it - "daily 20 mile forced marches" A brisk walk is 4 mph. A hike with combat pack might average 3 mph so that, if there are no breaks taken, this author would have you believe the academy spends nearly seven hours a day on forced marches to "weed out the less strong." The academy designed a program, he says, to cause the weaker to "drop like flies" who had to be "medically evacuated."There is not a single page that I saw while skimming that was not the same kind of nonsensical ranting. The book can be summed up easily - garbage spewed by a person who is angry, anxious and suffers low self esteem. Apparently he thought spewing this nonsensical fiction would be cathartic. For his sake, I hope it worked.If you buy this book you will feel very foolish after the first page. If the author wants to challenge my assessment, I'll be glad to have the discussion - on one condition. Identify yourself.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Written by a Cynic - Stay Away By Go Army Beat Navy I was intrigued by the title so I decided to give it a shot. I regret the decision. The author is perhaps a bright individual but hopelessly cynical. As a fellow graduate, I could certainly relate to some of the experiences but disagree with his conclusions. Specifically, I thought the Honor Code was truly well-considered and thoughtfully managed in the mid-80's when I was there. I graduated with a true sense of Duty, Honor, Country and an appreciation for the process of building leaders of character. It was not perfect, but it was very good and I think sets an example that other leadership institutions have modeled over the years. Typing West Point in lower case throughout the book was sophomoric. Don't buy this book.

Interesting book for anyone who has attended West Point, thinks he might attend, or is interested in better understanding the origins of ”Army Think.” USMA is a first person account of the trials and tribulations of a young man from upstate New York attending West Point in the late 60s and early 70s. It includes all the details of the prevailing Army mindset and what happens when that culture is confronted by an intelligent liberal-thinker bent on surviving four years in what turns out to be decidedly not the “Normal College Experience.” (Spoiler alert: The Army wins) Written in an easy to read if not occasionally overwrought style, this first time author tells it as it was and, unfortunately, probably still is. In some ways WSMA is a bit like an officer’s Biloxi Blues for the Viet Nam generation. It’s a quick enjoyable read that will make you shake your head and occasionally smile. Good gift for that West Point grad.

By Gator I have been programming in C# from its birth.  I’ve had the opportunity to teach many levels of C# throughout the years and as a result I’ve read a lot of programming books.  Most of them fall into one of two categories:  Learn a language - Step by Step or Learn a Language - The Definitive Reference.  While these books are good at introducing the reader to the language and promoting a ‘point in time’ level of understanding they don’t typically build a firm foundation for retaining that knowledge.  That’s where Practice Your C# - Level 1 fills the gap.   Do you remember learning your addition and multiplication tables?  If you were taught like I was you were given a matrix of numbers where you could derive the answer using any combination of 0 - 9.  I was taught the Step by Step method of using the matrix and could later use it as a Reference when needed but it alone didn’t facilitate learning.  However, in addition to the number matrix I was given hundreds of worksheets with hundreds of examples that I had to answer.  It was these examples (typically building in complexity) that really cemented what was taught in class.   Practicing Your C# - Level 1 are those worksheets. If you want to really LEARN the concepts and methods taught in other C# books you need to supplement them with this book.  If you're a newbie, don’t use this book on its own, buy any one of your favorite programming books by your favorite author and then also buy this book.  Go through a chapter in that book and then execute and practice the corresponding examples in this book.  You can’t help but learn AND better yet retain what you’ve learned.Overall, Practicing Your C# - Level 1 is a superb book that efficiently fills the gaps in learning a language.  When you are done with the book I’m confident you will have built a firm foundation to take your programming to the next level.  And if you are a teacher or professor you should absolutely consider supplementing your teaching with this text.  Your students will thank you.  I look forward to future levels of this book and other books by this author.

I was just wondering when or if the other books in this volume would be coming out?? I would like to gain a deeper understanding of c# and this writing style/ teaching method is exactly what I want.

This book was a bit of a surprise. I half expected it to be similar to many books that claim understanding of the spiritual events in the Scriptures, but which have the same boring and confusing rhetoric that most institutional ministers repeat from rote. This book does the opposite of those tired answers from the churches. So often, in the churches there is a lack of understanding of the many causes of God's intervention in the Old and New Testament.Personally, I like the NIV translation of the Bible (lately, the Greber New Testament has been my favorite though).Freed's book about spiritual phenomena in the Bible spans the gap of understanding that the preachers seem afraid to discuss because it might rely too much on psychic phenomena (and possibly risk of error of spiritual discernment occasionally while refining one's discernment and character). The preachers (and most Bible scholars) seem to avoid the most important questions of psychic phenomena in the Bible, asked by seekers of truth who find some answers in the Scriptures. In my opinion, the ministers often drive many people away from the God of the Bible because of these preachers' unrealistic interpretations of those very statements that are more psychic-based than anything else! Kudos for this author for taking the mystery out of the Bible and putting it back into the hands of each seeker of wisdom , and for not repeating old and tired answers regurgitated from paid-for professional ministers.Five stars. This little book does not lack in details.
