Excerpt from Life and LettersWith the materials in my hands I have endeavored to form an autobiography (if the term may be permitted) of George Eliot. The life has been allowed to write itself in extracts from her letters and journals. Free from the obtrusion of any mind but her own, this method serves, I think, better than any other open to me, to show the development of her intellect and character. In dealing with the correspondence, I have been influenced by the desire to make known the woman, as well as the author, through the presentation of her daily life.On the intellectual side there remains little to be learnt by those who already know George Eliot's books. In the twenty volumes which she wrote and published in her lifetime, will be found her best and ripest thoughts. The letters now published throw light on another side of her nature - not less important, but hitherto unknown to the public - the side of the affections. The intimate life was the core of the root from which sprung the fairest flowers of her inspiration. Fame came to her late in life, and, when it presented itself, was so weighted with the sense of responsibility, that it was in truth a rose with many thorns, for George Eliot had the temperament that shrinks from the position of a public character. The belief in the wide, and I may add in the beneficent, effect of her writing, was no doubt the highest happiness, the reward of the artist which she greatly cherished: but the joys of the hearth-side, the delight in the love of her friends, were the supreme pleasures in her life.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Life and Letters (Classic Reprint), by George Eliot

About the Author George Eliot was the pseudonym for Mary Anne Evans, one of the leading writers of the Victorian era, who published seven major novels and several translations during her career. She started her career as a sub-editor for the left-wing journal The Westminster Review, contributing politically charged essays and reviews before turning her attention to novels. Among Eliot s best-known works are Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda, in which she explores aspects of human psychology, focusing on the rural outsider and the politics of small-town life. Eliot died in 1880.

Fell short of expectations By Amazon Customer Pros: Covers a lot of material, simple and un-stuffy, generally idiomatic with its translations.Cons: Style is often at the level of a semi-literate blog, has very sparse information on important topics like hiragana and katakana (Wikipedia is way more informative), keeps you addicted to romaji (used throughout the book, and always shown at the top), does not teach romaji or follow any regular system of romaji spelling, provides little structure for practice but instead just says stuff like "If you can read katakana, please practice these words now", full of boring isolated sentences rather than anything resembling engaging material ("Middle school students attend middle school").Maybe the biggest problem is that the chapters are mostly disconnected rather than building up in a cumulative way, since there are no long readings or any kind of review built in. Learn one thing, forget another thing. It's like the sole purpose of each chapter is just to "cover" its material, with no concern for whether the knowledge is building up. In that sense it might work better if it were reorganized as a reference book (with a much more realistic title and marketing pitch). It gets two stars for covering a lot of ground compactly. I can't give more, because the book oversells itself, especially in the title: when people try to sell "becoming fluent in 90 days", they better expect they will be judged by raised expectations. And their advertising copy is downright misleading: "Don't waste money buying ten different books when you can learn everything you need in this one book" -- except this is only Volume One. I suppose that means I'm not supposed to waste money on Volumes Two, Three, Four...?

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. ... lessons and it is light on grammar but I like the relevant and diverse sentences the author chooses to ... By Danielle Hayes There are no kana lessons and it is light on grammar but I like the relevant and diverse sentences the author chooses to help the reader get to speaking Japanese in 90 days. It makes me very interested in his other works. Totally worth a read through for the beginner speaker.

Before Marilyn tells the story of Marilyn Monroe's modelling career, during which time she was signed to the famous Blue Book Agency in Hollywood. The head of the agency, Miss Emmeline Snively, saw potential in the young woman and kept detailed records and correspondence throughout their professional relationship and beyond. On the day of Monroe's funeral, Snively gave an interview from her office, talking about the girl she had discovered, before announcing, rather dramatically, that she was closing the lid on her Marilyn Monroe archive that day - to 'lock it away forever'. This archive was purchased by Astrid Franse, and together with bestselling Marilyn Monroe biographer Michelle Morgan they draw on this collection of never-before-seen documents, letters and much, much more. Before Marilyn explores an aspect of Monroe's life that has never been fully revealed - by charting every modelling job she did, and illustrating the text with rare and unpublished photographs of the young model and her mentor.

Before Marilyn: The Blue Book Modeling Years, by Astrid Franse, Michelle Morgan

Review "The images of innocence and loveliness among these 200 photographs can break your heart if you’ve got one." ―The Buffalo News

About the Author

Astrid Franse began her career as a model, teacher and actress and has been the owner of Bennies Fifties USA collectables shop for the past thirty-five years. Fifty years after Marilyn's death, Astrid discovered that she owned a box containing Marilyn Monroe's Blue Book Model Agency Archive whilst buying items for Bennies Fifties. She bought the box without any knowledge of the contents. Two decades later, because of interest in the Marilyn collectibles, Astrid started organising the box and was stunned to discover that it once belonged to Miss Emmeline Snively, the president of the model agency. The announcement made world news and she was interviewed for television, radio, newspapers and the Internet.Michelle Morgan is the author of Marilyn's Addresses (Smith Gryphon, 1995), Marilyn Monroe: Private and Undisclosed (Robinson, 2012), The Mammoth Book of Hollywood Scandals (Robinson, 2013), The Ice Cream Blonde: The Whirlwind Life and Mysterious Death of Screwball Comedienne Thelma Todd (Chicago Review Press, 2015) and Madonna (Robinson/Little, Brown, 2015). Michelle has written frequently for magazines, and wrote a weekly newspaper column from 2007 to 2014. She has been interviewed on radio and television on numerous occasions, with appearances including The Alan Titchmarsh Show, The One Show, BBC National News, Sky News, and Collector's Lot.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Creating Marilyn. Most informative book on Norma Jeane's life as a model. By F. A. Penney This book takes us to the beginning of Marilyn’s professional life as a model for the Blue Book Agency run by Emmeline Snively. Snively saw great potential in 19 year Norma Jeane Dougherty who she was introduced to in August 1945 by photographer Potter Hueth, who had been introduced to Norma Jeane by David Conover after he took photos of her that summer while she was working in a factory. Over the next few years Snively transformed the shy teenager into the young woman the world would come to know as Marilyn Monroe. So much had been written about those years, often shady accounts of how Norma Jeane was discovered, but for the first time we have the real first hand account of how this came to be from the extensive archives of Miss Snively now owned by Astrid Franse, which has original documentations, letters, photos and Miss Snively’s own anecdotes on Norma Jeane aka Marilyn. This is all brought to life by the wonderful writing style of Michelle Morgan, who offers us a glimpse of what it must have been like to be in Miss Snively’s shoes as she witnessed Norma Jeane’s hard work and determination to be a success. Often facing rejection, but always keeping positive and never giving up, as she evolved and blossomed into Marilyn Monroe. The book gives us a wealth of information and is like an insiders view of how it was.As many books seem to focus on the rumours surrounding Marilyn’s untimely death and the myths created about her, we are given an opportunity to see here the young woman before the myths began to take hold. Her early career and how far she came and in the memorable words of Lee Strasberg, “a warm human being, impulsive and shy, sensitive and in fear of rejection, yet ever avid for life and reaching out for fulfilment.”Highly recommended as it offers an insight into one aspect of Marilyn Monroe’s life that has not been examined so closely before.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. You have to read this story! By Amazon Customer We thought we knew everything about Marilyn and now all these new images and the story how Marilyn Monroe was discovered August 2nd 1945 when she walked into the Blue book model Agency in Los Angeles. Very interesting; well written and I couldn't stop reading.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. One of the Best Marilyn Books Ever Published ... Honest! By James Zeruk, Jr. This is an AMAZING book. Comprised largely of information from letters and photos once owned by Emmeline Snively, who was in charge of the Blue Book Modeling Agency, where Marilyn had gotten her first professional modeling jobs. The anecdotes and images are astounding. Most photos had not been seen in public since the 1950s, and Miss Snively's recollections--taken from the letters found in a box purchased from a dealer in Los Angeles by co-author Astrid Franse--reveal a tender, sensitive, innocent and quite funny Norma Jeane few got to see while she was alive and making her way up the success ladder (ladder, NOT casting couch).Marilyn's struggles, concerns, and successes are expertly chronicled by Franse and co-author Michelle Morgan. Ms. Morgan, it should be noted, is also the author of a marvelous new Thelma Todd biography titled "Ice Cream Blonde" (Chicago Review Press (November 1, 2015).If you are a serious MM fan, or an admirer in general of the Golden Age of Hollywood, then this volume is a must have. If you haven't a single MM book on your shelf, start with this one! It's a delightful book.

This issue – another near-as-dammit to 110-pager – we skip over the usual editorial comments and get right down to the nitty-gritty with Eric Messina’s cover review of the fave-rave ’70s TV monster movie, GARGOYLES; Christos Mouroukis contributes Pt. 1 of his two-part overview of Charles Band/Full Moon’s popular PUPPET MASTER series; “The Strange Swamp Monsters of William Grefé” are covered by John Harrison; Steve Bissette casts a nostalgic eyeball back over some vintage monster comics/mags, mainly focusing on the work of artist Jerry Grandenetti; Tim Paxton lovingly covers a whole heap of obscure Hindi horrors in his article entitled “The Monster Movies of Mohan Bhakri”; in her piece “Teenagers, Vampires & The Sutherlands”, Dawn Dabell sinks her eyeteeth into a pair of youth-oriented Hollywood fangfests from recent decades past (namely THE LOST BOYS [1987] and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER [1992]); in “The Many Lives of King Kong”, Daniel Best gives us the lowdown about the great ape’s forays Down Under (i.e., in Australia); and Les Moore rassles up a sweaty 6-pack of Mexi-monster movies, all featuring that masked wrestling icon Blue Demon. Individual titles reviewed this ish include yet another Blue Demon epic, ARAÑAS INFERNALES (1966), plus WYRMWOOD: ROAD OF THE DEAD (2015), THE HORROR STAR (1983), NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES (1969), THE STRANGENESS (1980), BIOHAZARD (1985), and HARBINGER DOWN (2015). Banks, Jolyon Yates, Christian Colbert, Matt Bradshaw, Dennis Capicik, Subhajit Sen, Ian Richardson, Michael Hauss, Brian Harris, and Steve Fenton. By Charles777 I really hate to write a negative review for a small press monster mag/book, but the buyer needs to beware. The writing is truly horrible. The author of the review/synopsis (don't really know what is was) for Gargoyles must believe that he is clever and funny. He is neither. Just an obnoxious writer with little command of the English Language. There are just too many other mags that specialize in horror to waste your money on this one.

Obviously these guys are doing this for the love of it. And this kind of passion is sorely lacking in publishing today. Show your support and pick up a copy of MONSTER. It's like fanzine from back in the day. I miss those days too.

By Squirrelman I would like to start by saying that I love the Tomb Raider games and that this art book was everything a fan of the series could hope for. It is 192 pages and loaded with content. Along with the pictures there is a description describing what the pictures on that page are and something about it. I cant say I really have any complaint with this art book and that Titan Books has done it again by making another amazing art book. The contents are:Foreword- This section is 4 pages and basically is just the Directors talking about the new game and what they hoped to achieve with it.Intro- This section is 2 pages and just briefly covers the story of the new game.Characters- This section is 56 pages and is where the book really starts to get good. It covers characters from Lara, Jonah, Jacob, and plenty of other friends and villains you will meet in the new game. There's also everything from soldiers with guns down to knights with swords and shields. Also there are the wildlife creatures such as the bears, deer, and more. The detail in each of the drawings was amazing and although almost every single picture was a frontal shot they were still all good. For each character you get to see them wearing different outfits and such. Each character has description telling you something about them. My favorites form this section had to be the deathless ones and the flame soldier both of which I have included pictures of.Weapons and Props- This section is 14 pages and shows you the different gear that Lara will have as well as some guns. At the end of this section are some murals which seem like something you would see in old churches. Its cool to see old drawings like the murals compared to what we have now days. As for the weapons and such it shows some different arrows Lara uses each with different tips and feathers on them and some even have fire tips. It also has a few different bows she uses. As for the weapons there aren't to many and it basically shows the same version of a gun but with different mods on them. I counted them all up and there are ten guns in all and each has different mods Lara can put on them. An example is the Ak-47 which shows the regular version and then one that Lara modded by duct taping an extra clip onto another clip for faster reloads as well as wrapping up the grips to avoid slippage. I wasn't to impressed with this section but I wasn't really expecting much weapon wise other than the bow mostly.Locations- 110 pages. This section is where the book shines. It shows so many different locations and Lara going on her adventures. The detail is outstanding and there is so much to look at. With each new scene there is a description about it. There are scenes of everything from Lara rappelling down into a tomb, her sneaking around tombs, trying to get past treacherous waters, climbing mountains, avoiding avalanches, standing in front of a massive bear, exploring abandoned buildings, her swimming underwater, getting chased by a helicopter, and the list just goes on and on. I really enjoyed this section and this was a perfect representation on what Tomb Raider is all about.Acknowledgements- 1 page. This section shows all the names of the men and women who spent their time making the wonderful art for this book and the game. I would also like to mention that every picture in the book says who made it. This is a nice way to see what the different artists role was and to appreciate each one for their works.Overall this art book was everything I had hoped for and more. The detail was amazing and all the pictures was everything you would expect to see in Tomb Raider. I never mentioned this yet but the book is a nice hardcover and made very well. The dust jacket looks gorgeous and the actual covers of the book are just plain black with a tiny silver picture of Lara on the cover. The black front and back isn't the greatest but the dust jacket more than makes up for it, and since that covers up the black covers its no big deal. Overall a 10/10 from me and a must get if you like Tomb Raider or just appreciate good art.

Putting the 'Tomb' back in Tomb Raider By Parka [[VIDEOID:797f22bf1fe7e7e9efb7d6d35efe1705]]Rise of the Tomb Raider: The Official Art Book is a wonderful companion to the game. Just like the previous artbook, it's filled with plenty of beautiful concept art of characters, environments and props, complete with commentary that talks about the design process. There are major spoilers in the book so do not go through the book before finishing the game. The artworks are very detailed and printed huge. They mostly digitally painted, like any other game artbooks, but is able to retain the painterly look for many of the scenes paintings. There aren't much game screenshots. As the art director Brenoch Adams said, he wants to put the 'Tomb' back in Tomb Raider. If that's so, it's a job well done in terms of the look and feel.I like Lara Croft's updated look and the several outfit changes throughout the game. Other character designs are alright, but nothing too out of the world, after all it's still based on the so called real world. The more interesting designs are the Deathless Ones.I can't help but compare it to the Uncharted series. The content definitely feels like there are some similarities to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, one of my favourite games all time. There are the ice mountains and mysterious caverns. However, the art direction for Tomb Raider is visually darker. The colours are muted and there's use of a lot of darks and shadows. The good thing is not all details are lost into the shadows. Overall, it's just a different feel to Uncharted although you know that both are adventure exploratory games in the same genre. The first artbook for the reboot Tomb Raider series, Tomb Raider: The Art of Survival, brings a welcome update to the art direction. That is a great book and at the time I'm writing this, that book is already out of print and selling at higher than normal prices. So yes, the game is popular and the artbook as well. If you want to get this book, get it early.Recommended to fans of the game, artbook and concept art lovers.By the way, if you like this book, be sure to check out The Art of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

By Morgan This is a nice artbook generally speaking, but I was actually a little disappointed with most of the art pieces in the book. Most of the art is environments presented in muted color palettes, and strangely enough all the environments kind of look the same. What I mean is the concept art in this book doesn't really look much like how many of the environments in the game ended up looking. While glancing through the book, I had a difficult time discerning which part of the game each art piece represented, a problem I did not have with the artbook for the 2013 reboot. It's still a nice collectible for the Tomb Raider fan. I just wasn't as happy with it as I was with the artbook for the last game.

The Devil's Financial Dictionary, by Jason Zweig

Review “Part social commentary, part instruction manual, Zweig’s book is must-reading for anyone who presumes or desires to understand the investment world…. Like the book in which they’re contained, each of Zweig’s entries is pointed, witty, and revealing of important and useful truths. The Devil himself, a.k.a., [Ambrose] Bierce, would be proud.” —TIME“Charming... Filled with linguistic jewels.” —Dallas Morning News“The perfect stocking stuffer for anyone remotely interested in finance.” —Business Insider“The Devil's Financial Dictionary is witty, irreverent, skeptical and humorous—making it an entertaining read for those within and outside the financial industry.” —Manhattan Book Review”Consistently yields pleasure and insight…. Thanks to the author’s staggering command of his subject, readers of this book will shed costly misconceptions and acquire wisdom that, if accompanied by patience, could pay off richly. The serious message embedded in the book’s humor is that investors who pay attention to stock market lore and Wall Street hype are their own worst enemies in securing their financial future.” —BARRONS“Inspired by Ambrose Bierce’s masterpiece The Devil’s Dictionary, Jason Zweig takes an equally beautiful and cynical view of the entire finance industry.” —Farnam Street“This is the most amusing presentation of the principles of finance that I have ever seen.” —Robert J. Shiller, professor of finance, Yale University; Nobel laureate in economics; author of Irrational Exuberance“Someone had to write a short, punchy book on the fibs and fables of Wall Street during this second Gilded Age for the extravagantly-paid manipulators of our financial system. Happily for readers—whether wise, naïve, or victimized—journalist Jason Zweig picked up the challenge, and ran for the winning touchdown with it. Laugh, cry, and learn as you enjoy the sparkling Devil’s Financial Dictionary.” —John C. Bogle, founder of The Vanguard Group; author of Common Sense on Mutual Funds“A delightfully humorous and stunningly irreverent Ambrose Bierce for financial markets. This satirical critique of what passes for wisdom on Wall Street belongs on the bookshelf of every serious investor.” —Burton G. Malkiel, professor of finance emeritus, Princeton University; author of A Random Walk Down Wall Street“Open this wonderful book to any page. Try not to laugh. I dare you.” —James Grant, Grant’s Interest Rate Observer“Jason Zweig’s book is absolutely marvelous. It combines wicked humor, scholarly etymology, and superb advice. If you have money invested, you must read this book; if you don’t, read it anyway for pure fun.” —William F. Sharpe, emeritus professor of finance, Stanford University; Nobel laureate in economics“You’ll love this book. Zweig cuts through financial hypocrisy to expose Wall Street’s cynical core, and does it hilariously. You’ll also get some super-smart investment tips. One of my favorite devilish definitions: ‘Broker: Buys and sells stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other assets for people who are under the delusion that the broker is doing something other than guesswork.’” —Jane Bryant Quinn, author of Making the Most of Your Money Now“Both witty and wise—with just a refreshing dash of cynicism—The Devil’s Financial Dictionary should be on every desk on both Wall Street and Main Street.” —John Steele Gordon, author of An Empire of Wealth and The Business of America "Vintage Jason Zweig: entertaining, truthful and oh so telling about Wall Street. The definition of Day Trader -' n. See IDIOT' - says it all. Any investor who does not read this witty, insightful and rueful reminder of Wall Street’s financial follies is an IDIOT!” —Consuelo Mack, anchor and executive producer, Consuelo Mack WealthTrack“Jason Zweig has long been a brilliant financial journalist. People who have listened to Jason have shielded their assets from the purveyors of costly and useless advice. In The Devil’s Financial Dictionary, Jason turns his wit and insight to arming us with an understanding of the financial terms that too many professionals use to intentionally baffle investors.” —Max H. Bazerman, co-director, the Center for Public Leadership, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; author of The Power of Noticing“Jason Zweig, one of the great truth-tellers in financial journalism, is the spiritual heir to Ambrose Bierce, one of the great satirists in American letters. Both use piercing wit to reveal important truths.” —Gary Belsky, coauthor of Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes and How to Correct Them"Broad experience, thorough conversance with history, unusual insight, and dashes of humor and cynicism. This is what you need to understand the world of investing, and this is what you’ll find in The Devil’s Financial Dictionary by Jason Zweig." —Howard Marks, Co-Chairman, Oaktree Capital Management, L.P.; author, The Most Important Thing: Uncommon Sense for the Thoughtful Investor“Wall Street frequently uses complex terminology to keep its own customers in the dark. That is why Jason Zweig’s The Devil’s Financial Dictionary is so refreshing. Zweig, who has a lifetime of experience covering finance, exposes the language of Wall Street with sharp wit, historical perspective, and a skeptic’s eye.” —Tadas Viskanta, founder and editor, Abnormal Returns, and author of Abnormal Returns: Winning Strategies from the Frontlines of the Investment Blogosphere“THE DEVIL’S FINANCIAL DICTIONARY, n. A compendium of financial jargon observed to induce in its readers nearly continuous spasms of raucous laughter. Has also been known to produce near-fatal episodes of cognitive dissonance in brokers, advisors, and money managers, who should consume its contents with care. Normal individuals, in contrast, may incur a deepening of financial wisdom, a fattening of the wallet, and an uncontrollable urge to steal entire passages for later use.” —William J. Bernstein, author of The Four Pillars of Investing and A Splendid Exchange“If finance were stand-up comedy, Jason Zweig would be its Groucho Marx—a serious man with a wild sense of humor: ‘Dog: A stock that obeys no command except DOWN’…need I say more?” —Laurence B. Siegel, research director, CFA Institute Research Foundation"'Witty' and 'fun' are two adjectives that may never have been used to describe a dictionary, but they apply to this one. But it is not just jokes; I learned a lot browsing around in this clever little book.” —Richard H. Thaler, professor of behavioral science and economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business; author of Misbehaving and co-author of Nudge"Cynical and exceptionally witty, this book shines a light into the unlit corners of finance. After a lot of laughs, I walked away with a less distorted view of reality." —Shane Parrish, CEO of Farnam Street Media"Jason Zweig is a journalist known for his wise investment counsel. But he also has a wicked wit, which is on full display in The Devil's Financial Dictionary. A fun romp for those who don't take themselves too seriously." —Michael J. Mauboussin, head of global financial strategies, Credit Suisse; author of The Success Equation and Think Twice“Fun, interesting, irreverent, and well-informed, Jason Zweig scores again. You’ll laugh and cry—and send copies to your friends.” —Charles D. Ellis, founder, Greenwich Associates; author of Winning the Loser’s Game: Timeless Strategies for Successful Investing“Finally, in language every investor can understand, The Devil’s Financial Dictionary lays waste to the hubris of Wall Street. The definition of INDEX FUND should be read over and over again. —Gregory Berns, distinguished professor of neuroeconomics at Emory University; author, Iconoclast and How Dogs Love Us“I tried to write definitions wittier than Jason Zweig’s but couldn’t. Instead, I laughed, chuckled, and chortled through the book. I bet you will too.” —Meir Statman, professor of finance, Santa Clara University; author of What Investors Really Want

Webb The book is excellent and the humor helps explain the concepts and the definitions. If you are giving this book as a gift -- there is a sticker on the back with what must be a new ISBN number. DON'T REMOVE IT as doing so will rip the surface of the cover. This is one of those books that you can pick up and put down at any time since it is a humorous dictionary. That means only one thing: there is a certain room of the house where this is especially appropriate :) This is also a good gift for college seniors who might be majoring in finance or accounting.

Peters I heard about this book while listening to the Masters in Business podcast with Barry Ritholtz and his guest Jason Zweig. I thoroughly enjoyed the podcast and Jason's use of wit and humor, and had to order the book. As a financial professional, I find many of the definitions hilarious, even though some hit a little close to home. It's a dictionary, so it's not something you will likely pick up and read cover to cover. I read a few pages here and there, and get a seriously good laugh during each and every reading. I recommend this for anyone interested in finance or for anyone who has worked in finance, provided they have a good sense of humor. Great work Jason!

By Pete from across the River A fun book, that provides serious information about investing and stock markets in a easy-reading, light way. If you are an investor, this is as pleasant a way to learn more about the system -- and it's beneficial for both the do-it-yourself investor and for those using services of various "investment counselors."

Facebook has given me a stage. A daily, worldwide audience for me to entertain with my humor. This book is a compilation of 4 years of amusing postings that I have written on my Facebook page, hoping to entertain my friends and family. Laughter is not only good medicine, it is also food for the soul. Like a good meal, humor is served up in the hopes that the diner will not only savor the flavor, but be filled to the brim with that 'fat and happy' feeling. This is my heart's desire! To bring a smile to everyone that I have contact with and this book was written with this in mind. My job as an in-home preschool teacher provides me with the company of some of the funniest people on the planet. Children! It's true they say the darndest things and many of these little gems are included in the "Daycare Dandies" section of the book. They have always been a big hit with my readers! After indulging in 300 Amusing Musings (That's right! 300! I counted!) you are treated to a heaping helping of non-fat whimsical poetry, a dash of juvenile anecdotes, and a side of deadpan comedic writings! So go ahead and fill up with zero calories of laughter and remember to "Live, Love, Laugh... a Lot!" Salute and Bon Appetite!

So I decided to read this book to remember how to draw people.I can say that there are very good advices on how to prepare for painting and how to choose the right pencil. And there were given excellent advices on the construction of proportions for drawing the human body. I think that drawing people is the most difficult thing in the work of the artist. Therefore, I recommend to all the artists who want to learn how to draw people to study this book.

Review

"One of the major strengths is that the book is written in teacher friendly language and that it gives practical examples. This content is much needed for today’s teachers who are either stuck in a traditional way of teaching OR wanting to change and are looking for ideas . . . I would definitely purchase this book and would strongly consider it as a supplementary, recommended text for classes I teach as an adjunct faculty member."

(Barbara Fox, Adjunct Faculty)"This book is great for our educational world right now. There have been many who are talking about the changes in our math classrooms to help promote more problem solving and not just answering questions. This is a great start for teachers to begin to make changes in their classrooms for students to become great problem solvers . . . I would purchase this book for the math team to have them begin the discussions of helping students become problem solvers." (Anthony Purcell, 6th Grade Math Teacher)

"This book is practical and forward thinking. It should be required reading for undergraduate college math methods classes."

(Christine Ruder, 3rd Grade Teacher)

"I absolutely recommend publication! Elementary teachers are overwhelmed with how to teach multi-step problems to young children. Knowing they (the teachers) don’t have to be the Know-All of the class, but to allow the students the opportunity to think, possibly fail, repeat, provides the teacher time to watch the students and help direct their learning.”

(Lyneille Meza, Coordinator of Data & Assessment)

"Math is an area in which critical thinking skills are vital. This book will assist educators in encouraging students to think critically when dealing with math problems. Learning to incorporate the 5C’s into the math classroom is sure to enhance both teaching and learning! . . . I would purchase this book.  We always welcome material that will enhance our students’ ability to learn and develop critical thinking skills! (And even have some “fun” while learning!!!)"

(Susan E. Schipper, First Grade Teacher)"In this book, Gerald Aungst expertly weaves math & literacy to promote a culture of thoughtful inquiry, problem-solving, and innovative thinking. He consistently demonstrates deep respect for the topic, the teachers, and the students, carefully interspersing stories, strategies, questions, tips, and tools in just right places throughout each chapter to maximize understanding using a gradual release of responsibility model. My eyes are forever opened to an instructional world where math and literacy not only coexist – but work in concert to elevate our instructional power potential!" (Dr. Mary Howard, Author)

“A dynamic read for math educators K-12, Aungst challenges the status quo and many traditional methods of classroom instruction that are still prevalent in many of our nation’s classrooms. In doing so, he makes a case for the vitality of a student-centered, rich classroom culture, filled with collaboration, problem-solving, rigorous curriculum, and high-quality communication, while celebrating student success at every turn. Moving from theory to practice, and providing a myriad of concrete methods and examples, 5 Principals of the Modern Mathematics Classroom is a must-have tool for every math teacher’s professional toolbox!”

(Thomas C. Murray, State and District Digital Learning Director)"Aungst ignites the magic of mathematics for his readers through five beautifully articulated guiding principles. Reminding us of what makes mathematicians so passionate about their subject matter, Gerald not only grounds his work in research but also takes us on a journey into several classrooms in each vignette so that we may take away actual, practical tips to put into practice today." (Erin Klein, Teacher, Speaker, and Author of Redesigning Learning Spaces)"Gerald has written a book about math instruction and learning, but the strategies can easily trickle to other disciplines in school.  He not only shares great ideas about how we can create meaningful learning opportunities and environments for students, he clearly articulates why this is important.  As someone who is not a math teacher, I found what Gerald wrote to be applicable to much of the work that I am doing in all areas, and really felt that the environment of math learning that he shared is much better than the one I experienced as a student." (George Couros, Innovative Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Consultant)"This is the book that teachers have been waiting for - evidence-based practices that are easy to implement. Aungst walks us through simple ways to change our mindset about math, encourage students to embrace mathematical challenges and integrate technology in our daily practices. So many ideas for every grade level!" (Annie Beninghof, Teacher, Speaker, and Author)

"5 Principles of the Modern Mathematics Classroom is an easy-to-read and use book that provides educators with practical strategies and solutions to immediately incorporate into their mathematics classrooms. The design of the book provides classroom teachers an opportunity for deep reflection of their current mathematics instructional practices to ensure that they are creating students who are mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. 5 Principles of the Modern Mathematics Classroom offers teachers strategies to allow their students to wonder freely, work collaboratively with their peers, communicate efficiently, and participate in experimentation and celebration. Using technology as a way to incorporate the principles of a modern mathematics classroom is briefly explored with short explanations of specific tools for each principle. Overall, Aungst has provided his readers with a five principle framework that when incorporated into a classroom, will transform students into mathematicians."

(Stephanie Schwab, STEM Program Administrator)

“What does it take to be an excellent teacher? With so many ideas about teaching floating about, it is necessary to capture the essential components and package them for careful consideration. While perspectives for what it actually takes to ensure all students flourish are manifold, it is certain that the aspiring teacher must be constantly reflecting on her practice and expanding her awareness of productive beliefs and actions. To this end, Gerald Aungst has developed a guide ideal for any teacher hoping to find the sweet spot between theory and practice that can easily translate to the classroom.

Capturing a very complex and hopeful view the nature of a classroom that promotes the success of all students, Gerald Aungst presents illustrations, research, and classroom activities. Simple and engaging, the stories and resources inspire the reader to delve into an entirely unplanned investigation of a new ideas at every turn. The 5 Principles of the Modern Mathematics Classroom are engaging, perplexing, and ripe for exploration and discussion. I'd recommend the read for any teacher looking to better understand what being an excellent teacher means through the lens of the classroom culture and for any PLC looking for a head start in casting a vision for a strong mathematics culture in their school.”

(Levi Patrick, Director of Secondary Mathematics Education at the Oklahoma State Department of Education)

"In 5 Principles of the Modern Mathematics Classroom: Creating a Culture of Innovative Thinking, Gerald Aungst comprehensively describes the characteristics of an environment for mathematical learning which integrates the math practice standards and actively involves students in higher level, inquiry-based thinking.  Aungst’s book holds value for the beginning teacher, who will find a multitude of resources and ideas for establishing an effective mathematics classroom, and for the seasoned teacher, who will be challenged to reflect on her own practice and incorporate the five principles into her math instruction. Coaches and other instructional leaders will find the book well-suited for book study or PLC discussion, with contemplative questions at the conclusion of each chapter. Gerald Aungst’s 5 Principles provides a framework for propelling math learning forward in the twenty-first century."

(Louise Kirsh, Math Coach, North Penn School District)

"Math is linear... Math is neat and tidy... Math is about getting the right answer... Not in this book! Gerald has done an awesome job of showing us what math learning can look like in a way that embraces the messy inquiry and problem-solving that accompanies real world math. Put this book to work and watch your students be amazing!"

(Scott McLeod, J.D., Ph.D., Director of Innovation, Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency, and Founding Director, UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education)

"Mathematical thinking critically impacts a learner's capability to process the world around her. The typical math instruction actually degrades a child's capability to see math in the world and to find delight in the messy construction of analytical, critical and creative processes through mathematical thinking. In 5 Principles of the Modern Math Classroom, Gerald Aungst provides a learning path for teachers that leads them to think together and to practice math instruction that makes math real. And that's what great math teachers do – at any age."

(Pam Moran, Superintendent)

"Gerald Aungst is as innovative as he is refreshing in his approach to mathematics instruction. The strategies he describes will make an average teacher excellent and an excellent teacher outstanding. The examples in this book can be used immediately in 1-on-1 conversations with teachers, small group professional development, or large group workshops. Each chapter resonates with his approach to the modern mathematics classroom. This book is an excellent resource for every teacher who teaches mathematics."

(Sean W. Gardiner, Ed.D, Director of STEM Education)

"Gerald masterfully reminds us that math education must be more than a “recipe” and challenges us to aid our students in thinking like mathematicians. With practical advice and inspiration, you’ll again find the beauty in math and be empowered to reveal it for your students. Regardless of the age you teach, this book offers a fantastic breakdown of the role of conjecture, collaboration, communication, chaos, and celebration play in transforming your classroom into one where students engage free-range thinking every day."

(Kelly Tenkely, Architect of Learning, Founder and Administrator)"Take a good, hard look at your teaching practices! If your math classroom resembles your childhood classroom, then you need to invite Gerald Aungst to the party. His 5 practices will help you transform your teaching so you can develop the critical thinkers of tomorrow. Gone are the days when mathematics instruction was focused solely on procedures. As Gerald describes so astutely in terms of music, we must train our students to be ready to work through unique problems just as we train music students to sight read. Gerald provides sound research and examples from all grade levels, including websites and apps for incorporating technology. He addresses the pressures of state tests and the long-term benefits of an actively-engaged classroom. He supports the premise that ALL students can learn math. Gerald guides you along with reflective questions and suggestions for how to begin. This book is an inspirational must-read, and includes insightful questions for use in a book study. Put it on your reading list and begin the journey." (Mary Palladino, Math Coach)

"Bravo! 5 Principles of the Modern Mathematics Classroom brings a conceptual framework for K-12 mathematics to life. As a parent of a struggling math student and as the executive director of Edutopia, a source for what works in education, I commend Gerald Aungst for sharing his five principles of the modern mathematics classroom. This book is a perfect blend of inspiring and practical. Highly recommended!"

(Cindy Johanson, Executive Director)

"Gerald Aungst reframes mathematical thinking for the reader, giving space for teachers to go beyond the usual airtight methods for math pedagogy."

(Jose Luis Vilson, Educator and Author of This Is Not A Test)

Howard In his remarkable book, Gerald Aungst has accomplished what I once saw as the impossible quest – bridging the gap (or in my mind the chasm) between math and literacy. He expertly merges both worlds, embracing productive chaos with an emphasis on the thinking process and student responsibility. Armed with a deep-rooted passion for the ‘mystery and magic of math,” Gerald helps us view math through an integrative lens of problem solving, innovative thinking and inquiry. A wide array of ideas, quick tips, strategies, and technology connections with vignettes and stories carefully interspersed to hook readers brings a wide range of instructional practices to life. Each strategy is designed to build habits of mind, illuminating the metacognitive process as students are immersed in active learning through engagement, collaboration and dialogue. In page after page Gerald shows his commitment to ensure that students will no longer question their mathematical prowess as he demonstrates his belief that teachers are the key to making that lofty but achievable goal a reality. The best way I know to describe Gerald’s book… In a word, POWERFUL!
