By baffled In my long hunt for the hidden treasure of publishers interested in listening to songs by unknown songwriters such as myself, this book offers more to the pirate treasure map than what I had previously. In other words, the book provides lists and contact information for several music publishers of the genre I write in (CCM & Worship), but there really aren't but a few listed that are accepting unsolicited song submissions. I have to admit that I have more information than before I purchased this book, but much of that tells me of more publishers who have their doors closed. So, we'll see what happens with the 3 or so publishers who are actually accepting songs in my narrow genre.A few more thoughts about the lists of publishing opportunities: The lists are not up to date. Some of the publishers listed no longer exist. Others do not have the right contact information - but you can still search for the right contact info via websearch. I also recommend going to the publisher websites to verify the song submission rules stated in the book (because the book sometimes has it half-right).The book contains articles and other helpful insights for songwriters. Those articles are worth reading. The book also contains a list of songwriter organizations. One claims that it will give you something for free if you contact them and mention the book and its offer. I contacted them and asked but still haven't heard back from them in about 1 month since my effort to cash in. The book also lists some songwriting competitions, some that I have heard of and some that I have not.So, if you are like me and love writing songs, hope to get one or more songs published, and have no publishing contacts, then this book is worth its cost - I recommend it. I would definitely suggest starting here rather than paying much of anything for the endless services out there to make money off of wanna-be songwriters such as myself (and perhaps you). This book provides a good starting point, and I suggest using it also for ideas on how to find other opportunities.

Interesting and useful, not as much information as other entries in the series By Reasonable Reviewer In general, I am a fan of these Writer's Digest books that give information to aspiring artists and writers on where to sell their wares. This particular book is divided into sections, choral work buyers, classical work buyers, producers, agents, etc.Between the sections, there are useful essays on how to be effective in marketing and selling your works. One caveat, almost all of the information in the book is available to the determined Google searcher. Also, there apparently are not a lot of venues to sell songs and chorale productions. All in all, it is a small investment to buy this book if you are beginning your journey to become a professional song writer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Mostly obsolete and irrelevant information By Mac Williams Why bother listing all the publishers that won't accept unsolicited submissions? Aren't the people that buy this book by definition seeking to submit unsolicited material? Why else buy the book? Also, a lot of the information is horribly obsolete:Submit material through:MySpace!Cassette!VHS!Are you kidding me? Whoever slapped this thing together must have been asleep. If you have to double check everything on the internet to make sure it's up date... I mean, isn't that what the writers of the book were supposed to do?

Excerpt from An Essay on the First Principles of GovernmentThis publication owes its rise to the Remarks I wrote on Dr. Brown's proposal for a code of education. Several persons who were pleased to this favourably of that performance, (in which I was led to mention the subject of civil and religious liberty) were desirous that I should treat of it more at large, and without any immediate view to the Doctor's work. It appeared to them, that some of the views I had given of this important, but difficult subject, were new, and showed it, in a clearer light than any in which they had feel it represented before; and they thought I had placed the foundation of some of the most valuable interests of mankind on a broader and firmer basis, than Mr. Locke, and others who had formerly written upon this subject.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thomas Jefferson recommendation By Timothy G Solomon In a letter to John Norvell in 1807, Jefferson discussed the principles of civil society and the proper organization of government: "I think there does not exist a good elementary work on the organization of society into civil government: I mean a work which presents in one full and comprehensive view the system of principles on which such an organization should be founded, according to the rights of nature. For want of a single work of that character, I should recommend Locke on Government, Sidney, Priestley's Essay on the First Principles of Government, Chipman's Principles of Government, and the Federalist."Jefferson to John Norvell, June 11,1807, ibid., XI, 222-223

32 of 35 people found the following review helpful. The story is so bad that it is nearly funny in an unintentional way By Labradorite The story is so bad that it is nearly funny in an unintentional way.Ten years before the story begins, Summer was engaged to the man she loved. Then her hard-hearing aunt, queen of gossip, tells her that rumor has it that Brad, her fiancé, has kissed a girl under the mistletoe (as if that was such a big deal!). Our brain-damaged heroine breaks up with the love of her life without giving him the chance to explain himself! She begins a career in modelling and dates another man who seems as stupid as her. They could therefore be a good match but she wants to break up. Without even popping the question, he buys her an engagement ring and Summer passively accepts the situation because, maybe, that is a sign that God has sent her this man! Now, there is nothing wrong with trusting God but that does not mean that you cannot use your brain and your heart to know what you want in your life: grow up, heroine!Summer is supposed to spend Christmas in California with her new fiancé and his parents, which she dreads. Luckily, the plane that she should take to go the California is cancelled due to a storm and the only flight not cancelled is to Kissing Bridge (!) her hometown in Vermont. Despite the terrible tragedy which happened 10 years ago (remember, a guy kissed a girl under the mistletoe, a real tragedy indeed!) she takes this plane and surprises her mother and her aunt who are happy to see her but nonetheless seem to be in some excruciating crisis. Has one of them discovered that she has cancer or lost her job or what exactly is the problem? The problem - sorry, the tragedy - is that the mother has not won the cookie competition, she is only second! How heart-breaking is that!Ok, I won't tell the end because you get the gist. The characters are shallow and terribly immature. The story is practically non-existent and idiotic. And the language! Even I, a non-native English speaker (sorry for any mistake in this comment by the way) could spot many mistakes. The worst of all is: "could have went" (aaaargh!). And the author does not seem to know the difference between fiancé (a man) and fiancée (a woman), or between "envious" (feeling or showing envy) and "enviable" (arousing or likely to arouse envy). There are other examples but there is no point in listing them.Reading a romance is something you do to relax and take a vacation from your brain, but this story did not relax me at all, it just irritated me because of its low quality. And my brain, which can accept mildly hard-to-believe and not-so-original plots in a romance protested strongly at the sloppiness and sheer stupidity of this one.

Anderson I knew Linda to be an excellent writer from her outstanding non-fiction books on frequencies and law of attraction, so I was looking forward to her creative storytelling. "Christmas Kisses…" is just what I had expected and hoped-for: A delightful, light-hearted romp through the classic challenges of finding true love, amidst family quirks and Holiday Season homecomings. Set in the beautiful, picture-postcard Vermont town of Kissing Bridge Mountain at Christmas time, if you like LOVE, hot chocolate and cookies! -- and who doesn't?! -- you'll love this fun escape... Enjoy! :)

(FAQ). TV Finales FAQ is the first book devoted exclusively to television's most memorable series finales. From Mary Richards' heartfelt goodbye to the WJM-TV newsroom in the classic finale of The Mary Tyler Moore Show to the puzzling conclusion of the enigmatic adventure series, Lost , to the tumultuous final hours in the life of Breaking Bad 's Walter White, TV Finales FAQ takes an up close, insightful, and entertaining look at the most memorable final episodes of television's most popular prime time, daytime, and late night series. Crafting the final episode to a long-running television series can be challenging for producers and writers who want to remain faithful to the show's characters and history, yet, at the same time, satisfy the high expectations of its loyal fan base. TV Finales FAQ offers television viewers the inside story on the creation, broadcast, and aftermath of the most famous (and infamous) final episodes of over 50 television series from the 1960s through the present day. The books features such shows as Dexter , Roseanne, Will & Grace, The Sopranos, and some classic talk and late-night programs such as The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson , and many others.

Review ''TV Finales FAQ is a must read for fans of the medium that will likely bring back memories of countless beloved and much missed programs that helped to shape popular culture.'' --Pop Culture Guy''With ratings figures and behind-the-scenes insight into the making of these final episodes, this is more than just a celebration of greatest hits, greatest misses, big ambitious swings, and failed experiments... it's a glimpse into the relationships we form with characters and fictional worlds, and what bringing them to a close means to each viewer. This is a walk down Memory Lane and an ode to great storytelling all at once. What fun.'' --San Francisco Book Review

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful capsule of significant TV shows and their endings By Johanna Draper Carlson TV Finales FAQ brought back a lot of fond memories for me, in two distinct categories. The first was that of watching many of the various TV shows covered. The second was when I used to scarf up books like this one, media surveys and volumes of pop culture trivia, back before we had the internet for that purpose. I’ve missed these kinds of volumes (although my slimmer shelves thank me).Stephen Tropiano and Holly Van Buren have written an overview of the last episode phenomenon, from both storytelling and historical perspectives. This chunky volume is divided into six categories:1. The Most Watched — which includes The Fugitive (the first show to have this kind of wrap-up episode), Seinfeld, Friends, and of course, M*A*S*H* (still the most-watched, and in an era of fragmentation, likely to stay that way)2. WTF? — the confusing or argument-provoking ones: St. Elsewhere, The Sopranos, Lost3. Finales that jumped ahead in time — Gossip Girl, How I Met Your Mother, Dawson’s Creek4. Daytime and Late Night — where soaps and talk shows are covered in brief5. Saying Goodbye — which seems to be stuff that didn’t fit anywhere else but that people want to remember, including Frasier and 30 Rock. The authors describe this category as the shows where the characters “close[d] up shop and move[d] on”6. The Best — the classic Mary Tyler Moore Show, which showed us how it should be done (and established the workplace-as-family approach); Newhart‘s famous call back to an earlier show; Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel saving the worldThere are more shows covered in each section than I’ve listed above, but the ones I’ve mentioned were some of my favorite chapters to read. I was reminded throughout of how much enjoyment I got from watching some of these series over the years, and how emotionally involving some of them could be.Each chapter goes into detail, enough so that you can understand the storytelling if you never saw the episode(s), or so you can remember the experience of watching these events play out the first time you watched. Each show is put into cultural context, with information on what else was airing at the time, how the series came to be, what drove the decision to end the series, and how it was received. Plot elements are reported and key moments of the show’s history listed. A lengthy appendix has short summaries of many other series finales.TV Finales FAQ, although saddled with a clunky title (because it’s part of the FAQ book series), is a wonderful time capsule with plenty of important TV history. The authors do a great job in these 400+ pages summarizing some of the best TV shows of all time, making the case for their cultural significance. (The publisher provided a digital review copy. 1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Useful but Poorly Edited TV Reference Book By Lee Goldberg This is an informative and useful book... despite some clunky writing, poor editing, and puzzling omissions. The writers do a good job giving detailed information on the creative arc of each series leading up to their finales, which are explored in-depth. The critical and "fan" response to the finales is also explored in detail. Series finales aren't limited to dramas or sitcoms. They cover many genres, including talk shows and soaps. Most of the content appears to be based on personal viewing and quotes lifted from previously published material...other reference books are frequently quoted and cited. Few interviews appears to have been done specifically for this book, which is a weakness and gives the book a "reheated leftovers" feel, as if its simply an accumulation of data already covered by others.. Most of the finales you expect to be discussed in a book about TV finales are discussed (NEWHART, MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, ST. ELSEWHERE, SOPRANOS, THE FUGITIVE, etc)... but, strangely, they also include final episodes that were never intended by the producers as finales (like "The Sharecroppers" episode of GUNSMOKE) and finales for shortlived shows like I MARRIED DORA and UGLY BETTY, and yet totally omit the blockbuster final episodes of popular shows like STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, LAW & ORDER, JAG, WHO'S THE BOSS, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE and STAR TREK: VOYAGER. It's not clear what the authors' criteria for inclusion or exclusion was in their book. The biggest problem with the book, however, is the clunky writing and terrible editing. The listing for MAGNUM PI is a perfect example of the editorial problems that plague the book. On page 59, they mention that the original pilot featured a hero who had gadgets, "including a hand glider that doubles as a machine gun." Hand glider?? That's a typo, and could be forgiven, if there weren't so many other editorial problems with the book.On the same page as that typo, there's this inane sentence: "Selleck liked Bellisario's writing as he had read his script for a proposed series entitled 'Gypsy Warriors' (1978) in which Selleck and James Whitmore Jr. played a pair of World War II espionage agents posing as gypsies in France and Germany." Well duh, OF COURSE Selleck read the script. It would be difficult to star in the pilot film WITHOUT reading the script, wouldn't it? Lame sentence. An editor would have caught that...assuming the book was edited. There's more. On the same page, the authors write about how Bellisario purportedly rewrote Glen A. Larson's MAGNUM pilot by using a busted pilot of his own as a starting point: "A few years back, Bellisario had written a script entitled 'H.H. Flynn' about three Vietnam vets: Rick, a club owner who idolizes Humphrey Bogart; TC, a helicopter pilot; and Magnum, a private investigator who lives in a guest house on a Bel Air estate owned by the 'florist to the stars.'" Really? The hero's name was Magnum in a pilot called H.H Flynn? C'mon, guys. The book is rife with bizarre sentences like those and its a shame. Even so, I would still recommend this book for your TV reference library.

Andy Warhol's Ridiculous Screenplays is a fascinating first-person account of writer Ronald Tavel's experiences collaborating with the artist on his films from the winter of 1964 through the summer of 1967. During this period, Tavel wrote seventeen screenplays for Warhol, including some of the most significant works in the artist's filmography and in American underground film more broadly: "Screen Test #2," "The Life of Juanita Castro," "Horse," "Vinyl," "Kitchen" (all 1965), "Hedy," and two sections of "The Chelsea Girls" (both 1966). The nature of filmmaking in Warhol's Silver Factory of the mid-1960s meant that Tavel's role as screenwriter was not restricted to a film's pre-production. In most cases, he was responsible as well for directing, performing, and facilitating the performance of the screenplays during filming itself. -from the introduction by Marc Siegel Includes Tavel's essay "The Roots of the Theatre of The Ridiculous in the Scripted Films of Andy Warhol"

A Wonderful Trip Into a World I Never Knew Existed By Tom Murray I was not at all familiar with Andy Warhol beyond having heard his name before - and I had never heard of Ronald Tavel prior to being given this book by a friend as a recommended read. It was a step into a world I had never known existed, but was quickly enthralled by. Ronald's experiences in film-making coupled with his ability to write so many extravagant and wonderfully bizarre screenplays was a treasure to read, and I wholeheartedly recommend it everyone.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. "You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style." ~ Vladimir Nabokov By Allen Smalling "Bigamy is having one husband too many. Monogamy is the same." ~ Erica Jong."It's all that the young can do for the old, to shock them and keep them up to date." ~ G.B. Shaw. This is a wonderful book! Dozens of themes, from "Academic Life" to "Gossip" to "Philosophy" all the way to "Youth." Newly revised (5th Edition, 2013) with 338 pages of funny quotes and over a hundred pages of indices so you can look up your favorites by author or by sub-topic. Those cracking wise range all the way from Shakespeare and the Bible and gather steam particularly from the mid-Eighteenth Century until virtually the present. The quoted include politicians, theater people, poets, philosophers, authors and practically anyone else who committed wit and got away with it. The book's British provenance is evident, as witness the fact that Noel Coward is quoted four times as often as Cole Porter. But the most recent editor has been listening to both sides of the Atlantic, and entrants now include famous American smartasses like Woody Allen and Fran Lebowitz ("I love sleep because it is both pleasant and safe to use"), along with the likes of the Two Ronnies, Douglas Adams and John Cleese. The OXFORD DICTIONARY OF HUMOROUS QUOTATIONS is not a joke book, more like a BARTLETT'S FAMILIAR QUOTATIONS that refuses to be serious; and as the prior reviewer said it's good enough to read all the way through. It may seem a little expensive, but it's a solid, well-manufactured book (Italy) that will stand up to the heavy use it is sure to get. Highly recommended.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Marvelous By GEDTEACH This book may find a place in your reference library only, but I enjoyed it so much that I found myself reading it from cover to cover twice. It's indexed by subject and/or author, another feature that I liked about it. You may like the humor it presents, as I did, or you may find in it a history, of sorts, of the subtle but definite changes in our culture. Several members of my family even received copies for Christmas; I thought it a classic and durable choice. Winston Churchill is still my personal favorite, but then I'm an Anglophile and he's the epitome of British, in my book! Cheers!

Lois Greenfield: Moving Still, by William A. Ewing

Review "Inspiring for their technical excellence, the framing and lighting, the choice of props, and the lithe dancers, these high-quality, large-format photos combine with an elegant layout to create a beautiful book. The artistic use of color, form, and movement in the photos can be appreciated by anyone; no dance background required. Greenfield's talent for knowing exactly when to click the shutter makes many of the pictures truly breathtaking." --Library Journal"Dazzling." -- Vanity Fair"Extraordinary photographs of dancers in flight... As a dance photographer, Greenfield is not concerned with choreography or characters. She's looking for the expressive potential of the dancer's body buzzing on freedom.... Greenfield coaxes from them a seductive balance of wildness and calm. Their bodies float, swim, dive and spiral, but their facial expressions are composed and introspective. In the most intriguing, secretive pictures, it's as if we're watching the dancers dream. We're seeing that moment when the dream whips them around and spins right out of them, and in our minds, perhaps, we catch a little of how that feels." - Washington Post

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Breathtaking By Amazon Customer Lois Greenfield is the master of capturing bodies in seemingly impossible flight. This book is a breathtaking celebration of the human form in motion, and pays tribute to her incredible 40 year career. Highly recommended for lovers of dance and photography, and anyone who wants to be amazed page after page!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A true artist By Angry and Late Calling Lois Greenfield a "dance photographer" is like calling DaVinci a draftsman. She is an artist with a camera and specializes--as this gorgeous book demonstrates--in capturing the unseen moment when her models (usually dancers) become airborne both physically and seemingly spiritually.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Gorgeous By Sharon Gallagher This is jaw droppingly gorgeous phototgraphy of superbly talented dancers.
