When an artist finds her Muse the results can be staggering. In this book, artist Dori Hartley has created her second volume of Mikkelsen-related artworks. Whereas her first Hannibal Artbook, ‘Antler Velvet’ was dedicated solely to the television series, ‘Hannibal’ - this new book is a statement of artistic love and devotion for the amazingly talented Danish actor, Mads Mikkelsen. In here, you will find portraits of the actor in character and out, as well as plenty of Hannibal, Hannigram and a delicious bonus - a section dedicated to Hannibal co-star, Hugh Dancy.

The American artist and naturalist Titian Ramsay Peale II (1799–1885) had a passion for butterflies, and throughout his long life he wrote and illustrated an ambitious and comprehensive manuscript. The book, along with a companion volume on caterpillars, was never published, and it resides today in the Rare Book Collection of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Now Peale’s color plates, lovingly prepared for the printer by the artist more than 100 years ago, will be published for the first time in this beautiful volume. At last, Peale’s life work, equivalent in scope and beauty to Audubon’s Birds of North America, will be available to a wide audience. The book includes a foreword by Ellen V. Futter and text by Kenneth Haltman and David A. Grimaldi that describes the art and science Peale brought to his extraordinary work. Also see: The Butterflies of Titian Ramsay Peale Notecards (978-1-4197-1806-9), The Butterflies of Titian Ramsay Peale Journal (978-1-4197-1805-2), and The Butterflies of Titian Ramsay Peale 2016 Wall Calendar (978-1-4197-1754-3)

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Titian Peale's butterflies: a publishing and natural science triumph By Merrily Baird On 25 August the New York Times devoted more than half a page in its Tuesday "Science Times" to heralding the imminent release of "The Butterflies of North America: Titian Peale's Lost Manuscript." That review was positive and noted that the volume was "mainly an art volume." Even so, the illustrated review could not adequately convey what a very extraordinary book the American Museum of Natural History, working with the top-flight art publisher Abrams, has offered us at a quite reasonable price. The book's several hundred color illustrations--lost to public view for 130 years after the death of Peale--are the star of the book. Also attractive are roughly a dozen page reproductions of Peale's field notebooks and the two pages of a "Prospectus" he produced, unsuccessfully it should be noted, to sell his study of the butterflies. Lifting the book beyond a simply beautiful catalogue of butterfly and caterpillar paintings is new material added by experts, chief among them Kenneth Haltman, who provided an excellent 13-page introduction. This essay covers a history of Peale's butterfly study and a biography of the artist, as well as an assessment of his work as a naturalist and the scientific quality of the butterfly illustrations. The "Butterflies of North America" will appeal in the first instance to lovers of butterflies and caterpillars. But it offers as well valuable information regarding the plants on which the insects feed, and it should inspire all who rejoice in the natural world.

By Amazon Customer This 3 star review is the result of an average between a top ranking 5 star for content, and a low ranking for binding. Its an expensive book, and the content is completely wonderful. I am so glad to have these images. However, I was shocked at the nature of the binding. How shocked-I returned it the first time because I thought there was some factory error, but the replacement book was put together the same way. The signatures of the book (the groups of pages) are exposed in the binding, that is, there is no book spine covering. The front cover of the book wants to pull free of the endpapers, and the raised bands across the exposed spine look like bands of glue. Everyone that has seen this has remarked on this-mostly, "what happened to the binding?" I don't think the binding is going to hold up to much handling, so be very careful with this. I can't tell if the signatures are stitched, but I can see that the edges are glued on the very edge, another indicator they are going to separate easily with handling. The content on the other hand...is wonderful. Expensive book, disappointing binding. The plates are beautiful, and so interesting to see this wide range of diversity that once was present-fascinating to see the species that are now thought to be extinct, and to recognize so many that are still with us.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. gorgeous book! By Ron Amiel high quality printed, on matt paper.plates are sharp. colours are vivid, so closer as possible to the original paintings.didn't like the fragile unbound spine of book.the American Museum of Natural History, is to be congratulated for sharing this masterpiece with us. hopefully more gemsfrom their unique library of illustrated works will follow.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and the perfect starting point for you journey By John Finch The author of this book gives you a simple, easy-to-follow model of what he does to be a successful guitar teacher, never dropping below 20 students per week. If you're a guitar player and want to start your own teaching business from home, this is the most important book you'll need, and the perfect starting point for you journey. Richie Jenkin does an extraordinary job covering all of the most important and fundamental aspects of starting your own guitar teaching business from home.He covers the following topics as well as many others: the space you'll need (how it should look and feel), the inner game (guitar teaching mindset), attracting students (with a very in-depth and valuable section on how to make a great flyer, as well as info on websites, business cards, and other strategies), the teacher/student relationship (his main focus in my opinion). If you already play the guitar well, and haven't yet created your own successful teaching business, I have no doubt in my mind this book can help anyone get the incredible results Richie has maintained for many years. One thing I will mention is that The Heart and Soul of Teaching Guitar is not a technical book filled with lesson plans (such as chords, progressions, finger-picking exercises, etc.), however, he has a nice appendix at the end that has a list of resources where you can get these things. This book not only has great steps for starting and maintaining a profitable and fun teaching business, but it also strongly emphasizes the inner-game, the mindset, of being a great guitar teacher. It is a warm-hearted book, and you can tell the author really loves his students. I come from a marketing background, and I know the best way to have a long-life profitable business is to create "raving fans." Then they will spread the word about your business for you. One thing is for sure, I'm a raving fan of this book!If you're truly wanting to teach guitar, I would get this book first, then purchase additional books on things that you could help you derive lesson plans from. Unless, however, you're such a guitar stud that you know enough to just create your own lessons from scratch every time. If that's the case, then you might consider writing a book yourself :)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A teacher teaches the teachers. By S. J. Schoenbach Jenkin is concise and clear, and he understands the two aspects of the subject of his book: how to build a teaching practice and how teaching can be done effectively and humanely. There are many guitar teachers who know their subject, i.e., music, but Jenkin also knows his real subject, people. He'll explain how he reaches out to each individual he is instructing. And he'll inspire the bored or aspiring teacher (of any subject) to reach inside for the heart and soul. He also happens to be a musical poet: homey, direct and deceptively simple; check out his cd's.

Richie's philosophy of tailoring his lessons to the students interests and abilities would make for a very enjoyable learning experience.Good roadmap for aspiring guitar or music teachers.

Wildlife photography is an adventure—and as any great adventure story unfolds, odds are, there are bound to be some great risks involved. Whether it’s the risk or the reward—or both—that motivates wildlife shooters, there is one pervasive truth: Preparation is key to success—and survival. In this book, Joe Classen approaches the art of wildlife photography from a hunter’s perspective. He teaches readers how to select and use the appropriate specialized photographic gear required for the rigors of wildlife photography—as you’d expect. However, he also teaches you how to mentally and physically prepare for an outing in which your wits must be as keen as your eye. Classen provides detailed insights into planning and packing for a wilderness adventure. Readers will learn how to securely pack their delicate photographic gear for a rugged, outdoor environment but will also learn how to choose and tote the best clothing for the site, accessories to ensure your personal safety, and even basic cooking and drinking requirements for days spent shooting in remote areas.Once you’ve scouted your location, you’ll learn how to track and lure your photographic subject using time-honored practices (calls—from lust to hunger, to anger and sloth; decoys; attractor scents; working invisibly, etc.) while “shooting” (your camera!) from a blind or stand—or, conversely, by using a more aggressive stalk-and-ambush approach. You’ll learn how to read animal behaviors—from eating to mating—and predict how, when, and where your best photographic opportunities will arise—and when your safety should be a greater concern than your shot. With this soup-to-nuts approach, readers will find, in this book, a compendium of information about wild-animal behavior, wilderness survival and safety, the art and science of photographic capture, and even storing and processing your prized digital files once you return home from your adventure. Armed with Classen’s suggestions and strategies, you’ll maximize your photo opportunities and increase the odds that your wildlife images are the mount-and-frame trophies for which you risked life and limb.

Wildlife Photography: Advanced Field Techniques for Tracking Elusive Animals and Capturing Magical Moments, by Joseph Classen

About the Author Joseph Classen is originally from St. Charles, Missouri. Located along the Missouri river, and nearby the mighty Mississippi, this historic town was founded in 1769 by Louis Blanchette, and was known as a launching pad for early explorers, traders, and immigrants who were heading west. St. Charles was a thriving trading community back in the day, it was the site of the famous Lewis and Clark Rendezvous, and it was also the familiar stomping grounds of individuals such as Daniel Boone. It was along those muddy rivers, immersed in that adventurous, pioneer spirit that his undying love of the outdoors was born.Throughout his entire life, from his earliest memories as a child, up until this very day, a passionate love of the natural world has possessed his soul. There has never been a time that his heart didn’t begin to beat faster at the very thought of heading outdoors for an adventure of one kind or another, no matter how big or small. His infatuation with Mother Nature has produced an unquenchable thirst which has taken him to some of the wildest, most unforgiving, and remote locations in the United States and Canada. In fact, that “call of the wild” certainly played a part in bringing him to the place he currently calls home: Kodiak Island, Alaska, one of the most beautiful and rugged places in the world. Over the last decade or so, he's shared his experiences and love of nature through various forms of media. He's written numerous books and articles on a variety of nature related topics, and was the host of an outdoors themed radio show for several years, been a member of the Professional Outdoor Media Association, and also work as an Alaskan photography, fishing, and wilderness guide. Please visit his website Wild Revelation for more information. (wildrevelation.com) His photography work has won awards, been published in numerous magazines, featured by conservation organizations and travel bureaus, and continues to gain worldwide exposure.

(I haven't found a better consolidated resource.) So too for anyone preparing for extended wilderness adventures where self sufficiency and thorough preparation are necessary for survival. I especially liked the suggested packing and gear lists. After 30 years of remote hunting and fishing adventures in Alaska, I found them to be comprehensive and updated with the most recent technology in high-performance gear. Joe's proven skill as a lifelong hunter shines through in his tips for approaching (even dangerous) wildlife for the best possible photographs. This book will satisfy all your gear and technique research requirements you are headed into remote wilderness with a fire burning in your soul for stunning wildlife and wilderness photography. Also, the book is full of some of Joe's stunning wildlife photographs that will definitely serve to ignite that fire!

Obregon There are a number of good books about wildlife photography that deal with photographic techniques, like focusing, exposure and composition. Fewer deal with what I call field craft, that is, taking care of one's self in the wilderness at least as well as your equipment and then finding and getting close enough to the wildlife to capture the image.Joseph Classen deals almost exclusively with field craft in this book. After an introduction showing the relationship between photography and hunting, he talks about researching the target animal and the importance of safety. There is a discussion of field gear including self-defense (!), bags, cooking and the like, and then specialty gear like clothing, scent, blinds and calls and decoys. He urges the photographer to practice before the big shoot, and discusses scouting the shooting location. Classen considers the two techniques of stalking and waiting for animals. Next are a few thoughts on the actual shoot, and its follow-up, both on site and at home, where, curiously given his avoidance of photographic technique, he discusses editing the images.Unfortunately, the book seems aimed at photographers who are going to be introduced into an extremely wild habitat where survival will be an important element. Places like the more well-traveled national parks are not disdained, but looked on only as places to practice wildlife photography. On top of that, most of the recommendations are generic. For example, the author tells us to research a target animal on the web, but offers no specific hints of places to look, or even the type of Google searches that help. For approaching animals, other than the suggestion that one use heel-toe walking to avoid sounding human, there is little advice other than to be prepared to walk or crawl into position. It would have been useful for the author to provide some specific examples of how he deals with particular animals. As to animal images they are all of the mega-fauna that hang out in Classen's area of Alaska and are rather pedestrian. I'm not certain that the author's advice would even be useful in say, Uganda. Some of the images are laughable, like a photograph of a person reading a book to support the point that the reader should research his target species. I certainly didn't need two small images of helicopters accompanying the text that tells me that rescue in the wilderness may be difficult.Even though I've photographed plenty of wildlife, I hoped to learn a few tips that went beyond common sense and what I could figure out on my own. I didn't.

He covers the research and planning for such shoots. He gives lists of the necessary equipment not just for taking the picture itself but also what you need to survive in the wilderness. He goes very in depth with these items and the other necessary skills of tracking, camouflage, and calling which enable the amazing wildlife images in the book. He also stresses keeping safe and legal in all activities. He also states right from the start you should already have the photography knowledge behind you. This is not a book about f-stops and shutter speeds but it is a great read for those wanting to take their wildlife skills to the next level.I received this book in order to review.

The book the natural food industry can’t afford to let you read. Deconstructing numerous fallacious claims from NYT’s best-selling author Vani Hari a.k.a. The Food Babe, this book describes in detail just how effective the right words are if you have a panacea to sell and a pretty face to help sell it. Researched and written by a dedicated international team of pro-science authors and firmly rooted in facts, science and logic, The Fear Babe places many of Vani Hari’s claims under a microscope - shining a light into the dark corners to demonstrate the lack of scientific evidence behind her most egregious contentions. Brimming with invaluable and up to date reference material on food additives, modern technologies, and the ways the anti-science hucksters operate outside of the law, this book is destined to become and instant classic. An essential reference for everyone concerned with their own diet and their family’s health. Take back control and fall in love with great food once more. Discover: What GMO technologies really are and why we need them. How MSG & aspartame got bad names (and why they’re harmless). The way charisma and clever wording are used to keep us in the dark. How to make a healthy diet that works for your own body. The facts behind those toxic pesticide scares. Why you can’t (always) trust a doctor. A complete reference to the European E-Number database. Why vaccinations are not just safe but also necessary. and much, much more.

Review "The Fear Babe is as researched and readable a takedown of any scientific charlatan as I've ever read. It's a must read for both her fans and her opponents. Especially her fans." -Skeptoid "Fear Babe is an excellent choice for anyone interested in the current discussions about the world's food supply, or searching for honest, reliable information on food science." - The Farmer's Daughter USA"And finally, the book does not dig itself so deeply into the realm of the scientific that it loses the lay person in the details. It's is sprinkled throughout with examples and well drawn parallels to describe concepts, and enough humor to keep you turning the pages well past the point that you intended to turn off the lights and go to sleep!" - Karen Morley (Blazing Pants)

Highly Recommended By Amazon Customer I was fortunate enough to read a couple advanced sections that the author put out and I'm looking forward to finishing the book. From what I've read so far it is very well written and well researched. The internet is filled with misinformation about food and medicine, so it is nice to see a reasonable approach taken to these important topics.

I was fortunate enough to see an advance copy of this excellent book. I have been aware of the antics of "Food Babe" (what a ridiculous egotistical name) for about two years now and, as an agricultural scientist, everything she utters and writes makes my skin crawl. I'm sorry, but she is a total illiterate when it comes to her knowledge of agriculture, food production and food science, not to mention her lack of knowledge of medicine. How she has the audacity to claim to be a leader in the food and eating arena is beyond me.The Fear Babe: Shattering Vani Hari's Glass House does a great job of debunking all her stupid and incorrect claims, and helps provide the science to enable you to understand the truth. The authors have clearly put a huge amount of work into this book and deserve a lot of credit for taking on this pseudoscientist (who is a computer scientist). People need to start believing in science and scientists, and not ignoramuses like Food Babe and Hollywood celebrities.

Pike .....coffee enemas, juice cleanses, colloidal silver, and 50 million ways to "detoxify" your body, thank heaven for Kavin! Rather than preying on our fears that we are bad parents for feeding our kids (and ourselves) sugar, "chemkillz", GMOs, and the glutens, Kavin's book lays out the actual science behind the state of our food. Sure, it's a good idea to be aware of what you're eating. But what good is that if you don't understand what GMO actually means, or why most of us should be unconcerned with gluten content and whether or not something was grown "organically"? Actually I take that back. I am concerned about organic food. That stuff can go pound sand.Anyway, since most of us are not dietitians or food scientists, a safe bet is to go with the scientific consensus. As the saying goes "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". And that's precisely why frauds like Vani Hari fail: they make outrageous claims without a lick of credible evidence. So if you like stuff like logic, data, reasonable conclusions, and the ability to enjoy your food, give this book a try! It might even cure your gluten-belly! #Senapath

From reviews of the hardcover edition:

“More Curious begins by making you wonder what kind of book it is, exactly, and ends by reminding you that categories are nonsense when you’re enjoying something this much.”—Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of A Visit from the Goon Squad

“Mr. Wilsey can write in a range of emotional octaves, moving from the comic to the philosophical to the streetwise with ease, while putting body language on his prose to give the reader an almost synesthetic sense of what he’s saying.”—Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

“More Curious captures the dizzying absurdity of contemporary America.”—Vanity Fair

“Sean Wilsey’s witty essays from his cross-country adventures form a portrait of the weird side of contemporary America.”—Los Angeles Times

“When Wilsey is at his best, and he often is in More Curious, his prose has a barely contained energy that makes his work both informative and entertaining. And often, whether his subject is rats or NASA or skateboarding or soccer, that work is provocative and huge-hearted.”—Alex Lemon, Dallas Morning News

“Sometimes he’s funny and self-deprecating and sometimes he’s somber; sometimes his scope is as sweeping as our country, and other times it’s as narrow as Buzz Aldrin’s taste in wristwatches. There’s one through-line from beginning to end, though: those careful, thoughtful, perfect sentences.”—Alison Hallett, Portland Mercury

“Generation-defining . . . a welcome chronicle of our age.”—David Kurlander, San Francisco Bay Guardian

Now in paperback, with a bonus essay not included in the hardcover edition, here is Sean Wilsey’s celebrated collection of essays on the glory and misery, the beauty and absurdity of contemporary America.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful! By Jon Hunt Sean Wilsey's book, "More Curious", is a gem. It's kind of like Seinfeld....a book about nothing...but it is about slices of the author's life which are funny, informative and make a good read. I wish there were more books like this.Wilsey takes us from Marfa, Texas...about as far as one can get from civilization and still be in the lower forty-eight....to a trip across the south in a truck that can do no more than forty-five. Along the way there's a chapter about buying a dishwasher online....I just bought one so this story was great fun. There's another tale about the World Cup, where he bemoans America's lack of interest in the game, which is curiously a little out of sync after so many Americans were enraptured about soccer recently. There are many more chapters, each with its own flair. "More Curious" is a potpourri of interest with no particular theme or direction....they stand by themselves. But the author's heartwarming tales make it a wonderful read. I highly recommend it!

At 29 my husband and I decided we'd had enough of it and left. Maine was our adventure, and here we have stayed. Reading this book reminded me of what I miss about Texas--the sky, the horizon, the adolescent "life ahead of you " memories. Wilsey captures the uniqueness of Marfa as it was and as it is. And art. And artists. Crazy. Now I will read Infinite Jest and Oh the Glory of it All.

Before Oprah…before Ellen…there was Dinah Shore. She was the queen of the afternoon talk show. For over five decades, Dinah induced a state of joy into people wherever she appeared, a love affair between her and her audience. In the fickle world of popular music, Dinah had a longer run at the top than any other girl singer, and on television, she had no equal in the musical field. Arguably, she was “the first lady of television.” Dinah’s life, however, was not always easy. She was a Jewish girl growing up in the Deep South and, at an early age, suffered a bout with polio. Later, as she was just achieving success as a radio/recording artist, a vicious rumor threatened to scuttle her career. Romantically, the lady was been involved with many men, from her first husband, actor George Montgomery, to Frank Sinatra, to her May/December affair with Burt Reynolds. Then, there were the clandestine relationships. Miss Dinah Shore is the candid story of a beloved woman whose career spanned almost all aspects of show business, from radio, records, movies, television variety and talk shows: a remarkable journey.

By James Zeruk, Jr. I've been in love with Dinah Shore ever since I was a boy, and for a long time have hoped a well-written, trust worthy biography on her would come along. Being familiar with Michael Druxman's work, I was delighted to learn of his book "Miss Dinah Shore: A Biography." To my added delight it turns out to be an excellent book--one of the best Hollywood-related biographies I have ever read, and I have read hundreds of them. Druxman presents a personable Dinah Shore, a lovely and talented songstress, doting mother, and loyal friend. But the book is honest, so we see Miss Dinah's blemishes, too. Far from scandalizing her missteps, Druxman's narrative endears his subject to the reader all the more. When all is said and done, one hasn't simply read about Dinah Shore, one has become her friend.I can't find an off-key note in the book. It's really a wonderful read, and as easy on the reader's mind as Miss Dinah was on our eyes, ears and hearts. Highly recommended.

Druxman takes you from Dinah Shore's early childhood to her failures and her successes. She is presented as a lovely woman who, through the up and downs of her life always held her dignity. Ms. Shore had a long career that spanned radio, concerts, recordings, movies and television and it is all presented in this great book.

The author of the critically acclaimed Elvis Presley biography Last Train to Memphis brings us the life of Sam Phillips, the visionary genius who singlehandedly steered the revolutionary path of Sun Records. The music that he shaped in his tiny Memphis studio with artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Ike Turner, Howlin' Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash, introduced a sound that had never been heard before. He brought forth a singular mix of black and white voices passionately proclaiming the vitality of the American vernacular tradition while at the same time declaring, once and for all, a new, integrated musical day. With extensive interviews and firsthand personal observations extending over a 25-year period with Phillips, along with wide-ranging interviews with nearly all the legendary Sun Records artists, Guralnick gives us an ardent, unrestrained portrait of an American original as compelling in his own right as Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, or Thomas Edison.

Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Roll, by Peter Guralnick

Review New York Times Bestseller One of The Washington Post's Notable Nonfiction Books of 2015"Beautiful and meticulous... Mr. Guralnick is the perfect man to tell this story."―Dwight Garner, New York Times"Definitive...With Presley's story at its core, Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Roll is in some ways the third volume [to] Guralnick's double-volume Elvis bio. What makes it more illuminating and arguably truer is seeing Elvis in the broader context of Phillips' career, [which was] in many ways a mission to transform [t]his nation's history of bigotry....You may come away born again."―Rolling Stone"A book so thoroughly steeped in its subject that it is almost an autobiography in the third person.... 'This is a book written out of admiration and love,' Guralnick states frankly in an author's note. As such, it honors Sam Phillips elegantly, by devoting itself to the one subject Phillips seemed to admire and love as much as he did music: Sam Phillips himself."―David Hajdu, New York Times Book Review"Lovingly crafted.... With crisp prose and meticulous detail, Guralnick gives Phillips the same epic treatment he previously employed in acclaimed biographies of Sam Cooke and Elvis Presley.... An astonishing feat.... It is difficult to imagine a more complete or poetic account of his life than this remarkable volume.... 'I didn't set out to revolutionize the world,' Phillips once told Guralnick in a moment of humility, but in this book [the author] convincingly argues that Phillips did just that."―Charles Hughes, The Washington Post"Peter Guralnick isn't just a music writer or a biographer--he's one of the essential chroniclers of American popular culture, and his work illuminates some of the crucial components of our national identity: race, religion, fame, and the big business of having fun, among others. In this epic biography of Sam Phillips, Guralnick bears witness to the birth of rock and roll and the cultural revolution it inspired. It's not only an unforgettable portrait of an eccentric visionary, it's a testament to the power of ordinary people to change the world with nothing more than a beautiful idea and a handful of songs."―Tom Perrotta, author of The Leftovers"When Elvis Presley stepped into a Memphis recording studio with producer Sam Phillips in 1954, they defined rock 'n' roll as we know it. Peter Guralnick already gave us Elvis's story in two landmark books. He now returns with a brilliant, intensely human look at Phillips, the endlessly fascinating figure who also recorded Johnny Cash, B.B King, Howlin' Wolf, and Jerry Lee Lewis. It's a bold, insightful work that tells us in novelistic detail about the obsessions and struggles of the man who presided over the uneasy birth of rock 'n' roll."―Robert Hilburn, author of Johnny Cash"Sam Phillips is an epic biography, at once sweeping and personal, in which the gifted writer Peter Guralnick captures the voice and life of a transformational figure in American music."―Jess Walter, author of Beautiful Ruins"Rigorously researched.... Definitive."―Will Hermes, Rolling Stone"A monumental biography of the larger-than-life loner who fought for the acceptance of black music and discovered an extraordinary group of poor, country-boy singers whose records would transform American popular culture.... A wonderful story that brings us deep into that moment when America made race music its own and gave rise to the rock sound now heard around the world."―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Guralnick wrote definitive biographies of Elvis and now does the same for Phillips, a visionary who gave voice to a rich and diverse culture long marginalized.... Essential reading for music fans."―Ben Segedin, Booklist (starred review)"Epic, elegant and crisply told."―Henry L. Carrigan, Jr., BookPage"Acclaimed music historian Guralnick has written landmark accounts of Elvis and the history of American roots music, and he now turns his considerable skills to the life of Sun Records producer Sam Phillips in this delightful and comprehensive volume. Guralnick energetically tells the must-read tale of a Southern boy intent on enacting his vision of freedom and justice through music."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"The book is a labor of love. Guralnick is passionate about the music, but he doesn't let his passion overinflate his prose, and he seems to know everything about everyone who was part of the Southern music world... It's natural for us to take events that were to a significant extent the product of guesswork, accident, short-term opportunism and good luck...and shape them into a heroic narrative....But a legend is just one of the forms that history takes -- which is why it's good to have Guralnick's book."―Louis Menand, The New Yorker"A deeply intimate portrait... An altogether profound and revelatory experience."―Bob Mehr, The Commercial Appeal"Peter Guralnick tells it like it was. If you want to dig into the truth and read about what really went down in Memphis in the '50s, this is the definitive book."―Lucinda Williams"Mr. Guralnick has conjured the magic of Elvis in the Sun studio as Presley's biographer, but his knowing Sam Phillips makes this the superior version... Mr. Guralnick takes you right to the room, and rather than gliding past a scene that has been written about many times, he immerses himself comfortably in it and revives its original intensity....[He] has produced the gold-standard Presley bio and now a complete portrait of his inspiration. Mr. Guralnick, the historian, writer and fan, has captured what was different, real and raw about a great artist."―Preston Lauterbach, Wall Street Journal" With this book, Peter Guralnick brings popular music and the man who gave us so much of it, Sam Phillips, to the very centre of American social history. And he does it quite brilliantly."―Roddy Doyle, author of The Commitments"Guralnick's book is comprehensive, warm, thorough, captivating, and compulsively readable....It may just be the best music book of 2015."―Henry Carrigan, No Depression"A rollicking good time. Sometimes reading can rattle the cage and stomp the floor, and no one rattled the cages more than Sam Phillips."―Memphis Flyer"A cornerstone addition to Guralnick's unmatched backlist of music history and biography."―Shelf Awareness" A deeply intimate portrait that never veers into hagiography....For Guralnick and for the reader, the book becomes the quintessential Phillips production: an altogether profound and revelatory experience."―Memphis Commercial Appeal "A sprawling, engaging biography stuffed with stories and tidbits."―Knoxville News"Much-anticipated and long-awaited, Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Roll, is as much a labor of love for Peter Guralnick as Sun Records was to Sam Phillips. And that's saying something."―Now Dig This"Thoroughgoing and thoroughly satisfying.... Guralnick has injected enough helium and momentum into the material to get it airborne and moving stately forward."―Peter Lewis, Christian Science Monitor"Superb.... No one could tell Sam's story -- a complex mixture of music business reportage and personal narrative -- with the level of detail and affection that Guralnick brings to these 700-plus pages. Sam Phillips may well be the capstone to Guralnick's career.... This book gives Phillips and his judgments their due. Bridging American music's racial divide and transforming its pop, he was as much an original as the artists he nurtured."―USA Today"If his two-volume life of Elvis Presley, biography of Sam Cooke, Dream Boogie, and trilogy on southern roots music haven't convinced you that Peter Guralnick is our finest chronicler of American music, [this] should do the trick....Magisterial yet lively....it's a book that places Guralnick in some pretty heady company. Arguably, he is to music what Robert Caro is to politics: a dogged researcher and graceful writer who has a genuine feel for his subjects and the knowledge to place them in a larger context.... A wonderfully nuanced and shaded portrait."―Best Classic Bands"Phillips's stories and philosophies light up these pages....By the book's end, the weight of Guralnick's mission comes into full view. Phillips had advised him early on, "It ain't for you to put me in a good light. Just put me in the focus I'm supposed to be in." And that's exactly what Guralnick has done. His subject would no doubt be proud that he got it right."―Boston Globe"Guralnick's biography of Sam Phillips is a key work of Americana."―Downbeat "The story of Sam Phillips is not just a musical journey; it's a portrait of a polymath, an incredibly driven Southern eccentric....Guralnick clearly delights in telling Phillips's tale. He is known for being an excellent and empathetic biographer: straightforward, never florid. ...Forty pages before the end of this tome, the author comes uncharacteristically clean. "Hell, why not just come out and say it? I loved Sam." By that point, so do we."―MacLean's"Guralnick paints a detailed and sympathetic picture of Phillips as a relentless visionary,a talker, a loving but imperfect family man and a perfectionist who relished imperfections that could make recordings special."―Michael Hill, Associated Press"Just as the two magisterial volumes of Guralnick's Presley bio paint a much more nuanced picture of Presley, The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Roll captures the complexity of the colorful Phillips....The author loves his subject and loves writing about him.... A book that can stand with his best, and that is [both] entertaining and lively....For that rock-and-roll fans should be eternally grateful."―Philadelphia Inquirer

Sam Phillips."It ain't for you to put me in a good light. Man, I don't give a damn if you say one good thing about me." Sam Phillips to Peter Guralinick. This book, if it isn't the definitive book on Sam Phillips, is certainly one of the best books ever written about him. The author, Peter Guralnick, has written a number of other very fine, in-depth books like "Last Train To Memphis" "Lost Highway", "Feel Like Going Home", "Sweet Soul Music" , "Dream Boogie", and others, all having his talent for informative, interesting, and sometimes exhaustive research on the subjects (Elvis, soul music, blues, Sam Cooke, etc.), and this book is no different. I was lucky enough to be loaned an advance copy of this book (and another music oral biography) several days prior to it's release if anyone is wondering how I read this thick tome in less than one day. But if you're a fan of Phillips' importance to 20th Century music you too will gobble this book up."I knew the physical separation of the races--but I knew the integration of their souls." Sam Phillips, when he opened Sun Studios.Guralnick has crossed paths with Phillips for 25 years or so, which gives him a closer and better understanding and insights of who Phillips was early on, and who he is as we know him today, with his great contributions to music. Beginning with Phillips' early life as a boy and up through his death, Guralnick has painted a (much needed) portrait with many layers coming to light of Phillips' life, as a boy in the Depression era, his early important influences (a blind sharecropper, a deaf aunt, and a female owner of a whorehouse in the Depression era) , the people who crossed his path (both in and out of music), and of course, the artists and music he envisioned and recorded (and sometimes sold to other labels for much needed money) in his studio. The book is laid out in chronological style which gives Phillips' story a more straightforward, no nonsense, "big picture" feel as you read about his life, both in and out of music. The various period photos (like Phillips as an 8 year old, fishing with his young son in a rowboat, standing with Elvis and Phillips' Sun Records secretary Marion in 1956, Phillips with his grown son working together in the studio, or vocal group The Prisonaires in the studio with pin-up photos on the wall, or Cavalry Trooper Pvt. Chester Arthur Burnett (Howlin' Wolf) cleaning a horse hoof in 1941, Billy Riley on stage--rockin', Jerry Lee Lewis (at the piano) Boots Randolph and Philips in the studio) also help tell Phillips' story. Of course the music is dealt with at some length, and the many artists he recorded (like Howlin' Wolf, Rufus Thomas, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Sonny Burgess, B. B. King, Roscoe Gordon, and a number of others maybe lesser known) are pretty much accounted for in the book. There's a Bibliography, a Discography section, and (thankfully) an Index, especially useful in a book of this type with so many people and places across Phillips' life.Never before has there been such an accurate, in-depth book on Sam Phillips. And it took someone like Guralnick to flesh out this story in an accurate, intelligent, informative and interesting way. And with a person as complex as Phillips, Gurlanick's clear, concise style makes for good reading. If there's anyone who isn't familiar with Phillips' work, this book will tell you all you need to know. And I'm pretty sure everyone's heard at least a few artists/songs from Sun Studios. On that point, there's a 2 CD set (Yep Roc) of Phillips' work that's been released around the release date for this book, but there are better sets with better sound, so look around if you want to hear the real-deal proof of Phillips' magic. After reading this book you'll come away with a better understanding of a man who did things his way--in life and in the studio. This has to be one of the best books of it's type this year. Quite possibly he did invent rock 'n' roll. And if he didn't, he was darn close to it's birth.

By true britty AUDIOBOOK VERSION This is the book on Sam Phillips, Sun Records, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and on and on that I've been waiting for. I spent an Audible credit for this one and I would've spent a hundred.Peter Guralnick is best known for his two bios on Elvis Presley--which are incredible reads on the rise (what goes up) and fall (must come down) of the '50s rock 'n' roll legend. Get em.But also get this one. In fact, get this one first. As Guralnick writes in the author intro, he was invested in the Elvis and the Sam Cooke books, but he was personally involved in the Sam Phillips bio because he knew the producer for 25 years. All Sam asked Guralnick to do when writing his life's story was to "tell the truth."And it's a remarkable truth and remarkably well told. Sam Phillips opened a recording studio in Memphis at just the right moment, in 1950, right before the rock 'n' roll explosion. He grew up in the South with ears that heard genius blues musicians where others' eyes only saw black men and women. Memphis Recording Service (later renamed Sun Studio) opened its doors to these blues masters, who were sometimes veteran guitar pickers but as often as not raw young talents still trying to find their sound.Howlin' Wolf, Ike Turner and B.B. King recorded at the Memphis studio. Scads more. (BTW, you can pick up a compilation album of Sun Records' blues artists, which you might want to have playing as you roll through this book. You can also get Elvis and Cash albums devoted to their Sun work. Probably for some others as well--Perkins, Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis--but I haven't checked.) One priceless tidbit about B.B. King that Guralnick adds is that when B.B. recorded with Sam he was a young guitarist and hadn't yet perfected the art of playing his guitar and singing at the same time. Even legends have to start at the beginning.Guralnick spends a good chunk of the early chapters on the blues. And that's a great thing because popular history tends to shove that story aside to get to 1954 when Elvis Presley, a greasy-haired kid from every wrong side of every wrong track, worked up the nerve to pester Mr. Phillips for a recording session.Sam put him together with guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, who were anything but virtuosos. That first session has become mythic it's been talked about so much. Guralnick blows away the cobwebs. He takes us back into the stuffy room for the all-nighter that was going nowhere until, in an off moment, Elvis started horsing around with an Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup tune, "That's Alright (Mama)."Sam heard something in that cut up nobody else would've. This is what made him a genius producer and a central figure in the genesis of '50s rock 'n' roll. And this is what makes Guralnick's book so damn good: that the author is able to expose how chancy a recording session is, how uncertain the creative act, and how a really good producer can help an artist throw out the common and elevate the original.Musicians, recording engineers, music producers and music buffs will want to delve in this book and read between the lines. Even though this is a book about outdated recording technology and "ancient" music, it's also about finding diamonds in the coarsest stone. Guralnick gives example after example. Like when Johnny Cash wanted to chuck his lead guitarist. Luther Perkins struggled to pick out every note. Cash was getting frustrated. But Sam said, no, you want to keep Luther because it's his inexperience that is helping to create that fresh boom chicka boom sound.Sam took chances on artists who didn't have money, who didn't have looks (Elvis wasn't as pretty then as he'd become later), who didn't already have fan bases. They weren't always great musicians and their songwriting needed some arranging. But he created a space in his studio where talent could be developed and could take its time--though these artists were itching to run. And, yeah, Guralnick also tells the personal side of Sam's story. You get to know him about as well as Guralnick did, as well as you can from a book. But you'll want to get this book for the magic, and the magic is in the music.

27 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Dubious premise By H.C. Carey This books starts off very strong with an account of Phillips as a poor but idealistic young man, equal parts Dale Carnegie and Walt Whitman. It's very evocative of the late 40s early 50s. It paints a vivd picture of Phillips as a guy with an obsessive and unique artistic vision. It trails off into a long series of anecdotes as Phillips becomes a wealthy and directionless alcoholic and moral hypocrite, sort of a disagreeable rich blowhard and jerk. The larger problem here is the idea of Phillips as a racial visionary, a real believer in racial justice. There's just no evidence at all for that. Phillips is eager to record African American early on, and he likes the music and he seems not to have been a bigot personally. But once he gets Elvis that's pretty much the end of recording black people--they just completely drop out of Guralnick's narrative. While the civil rights movement is going on Phillips is obsessing about Jerry lee Lewis and Johnny Cash: Sun effectively becomes an all white label. He recorded great music and he had a knack for getting intense performances out of people, but the book is based heavily on the premise that we should care because Phillips is a racial visionary. But he's only recording African Americans early on, for a brief period, and you can't escape the suspicion that he was primarily motivated by the fact that there was an untapped market, rather than a larger vision of social justice. You have to pay attention to catch it, but all the quotes from Phillips about his commitment to racial justice come well after the fact, when he is being asked to look back nostalgically and he is clearly inflating the social significance of his work. There was surely a lot of cross-cultural borrowing going on, but several of Johnny Cash's early hits draw on really retrograde racial ideas (Hey Porter! and Get Rhythm). In other words, a vision of racial equality does not seem to have been the guiding principle. So I'd say the book fails to make it case. Phillips comes off as not a bigot, but not really committed to racial justice in any way. Ok fine, but again, that's the premise Guralnick starts with, the idea that Phillips is an important figure in the history of race relations. Not only was I unconvinced, I think the book really badly overstates the case.Guralnick is one of those writers who wants rock and roll to be in some sense revolutionary, a stale case that's increasingly hard to make. If you imagine Great Balls of Fire as being in some way "about" or connected to racial equality, then you can lard the song with heightened significance that really, it can't bear. That's pretty much the problem with the book.
